On the Synthesis of 3-Acetyl-1-aryl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-1 H-1,2,4-triazepin-7-ones by Reaction of Nitrilimines with 3-Aminopropanoic Acid

Nitrilimines were prepared from N-arylhydrazono chlorides and reacted with -alanine yielding the corresponding amidrazones, which were treated with 1,1-carbonyldiimidazole in THF affording the hitherto unknown 3-acetyl-1-aryl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-1,2,4-triazepin-7-ones.     

An alternative synthesis of 2-(N-arylhydrazono)-1-benzothiophen-3-ones

In the presence of triethylamine, 2-mercaptobenzoic acid readily adds onto acylhydrazonoyl chlorides (1a-c) (precursors of the reactive nitrile imine 1,3-dipolar species) to afford good yields of the corresponding 2-[(2-oxo-1-arylhydrazonopropan-1-yl)mercapto]benzoic acids (2a-c). The latter acyclic adducts, in THF in the presence of 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole, undergo intramolecular cyclization involving the activated carboxy and the enol functionality to deliver the respective 2-(N-arylhydrazono)-3-oxobenzothiophenes (3a-c). In the solid state, the latter compounds adopt the (Z)-geometry around the C=N double bond as evidenced by single crystal X-ray structure determination for 3b.     

On the Synthesis of 2-Acetyl-4-aryl-6H-1,3,4-thiadiazin-5-ones by Reaction of Nitrilimines with α-Mercapto Alkanoic Acids

Summary.  N′-Arylacetonitrilimines were generated from acetohydrazonyl chlorides and reacted with mercaptoalkanoic acids forming 4-aryl-5-oxo-3-thiahexanoic acids. These were cyclized by reaction with dicyclohexyl carbodiimide yielding 2-acetyl-4-aryl-6H-1,3,4-thiadiazin-5-ones. Received November 13, 2001. Accepted January 9, 2002     

On the Synthesis of Some 2-Arylhydrazono-3-oxothieno[2,3-<Emphasis Type="Italic">b</Emphasis>]pyridines by Reaction of Nitrilimines with 2-Mercaptonicotinic Acid

Summary. Nitrilimines prepared from N-arylhydrazono chlorides reacted with 2-mercaptonicotinic acid yielding the corresponding addition products, 2-[(2-oxo-1-arylhydrazonopropan-1-yl)mercapto] nicotinic acids, which were treated with 1,1-carbonyldiimidazole in THF affording by cyclocondensation the corresponding hitherto unknown 2-arylhydrazono-3-oxothieno[2,3-b]pyridines.     

Substituted 1,2-Thiazetidine 1,1-Dioxides. Synthesis of (<Emphasis Type="Italic">RS</Emphasis>)- and (<Emphasis Type="Italic">S</Emphasis>)-1,2-Thiazetidine-3-acetic Acid 1,1-Dioxide and its Reactions with Amino Acids and Dipeptides

Summary. (RS)-2-tert-Butyldimethylsilyl-1,2-thiazetidine-3-acetic acid 1,1-dioxide prepared from (RS)-S-benzyl--homocysteine was condensed via DCC/NHS with various L-amino acid esters or dipeptide esters yielding N-silylated -sultam peptides. A -sultam active ester was isolated as an intermediate. Desilylation with TBAF in THF yielded stable N-unsubstituted products, and deprotection of the benzyl esters was achieved by catalytic hydrogenation. (S)-S-Benzyl--homocysteine was obtained by fractional crystallization of the brucine salt of the racemate and transformed into benzyl (S)-1,2-thiazetidine-3-acetate, which was on the other hand synthesized by an enantiospecific route from -benzyl Boc-L-aspartate. Some -sultam peptides were prepared from the (S)-enantiomer, and finally some -sultam peptides containing D-Ala units were obtained.     

The raised-cosine wavelets in computerized tomography

In Computerized Tomography (CT), an image must be recovered from its sampled projections in the form of values of the Radon transform. In this work a method of recovering the image is based on the properties of the raised-cosine wavelet. This wavelet has a closed form which allows for certain precomputations and avoids convolution. The rate of convergence of the resulting algorithm to the image density function is found under suitable hypotheses. This algorithm is then tested on the standard Shepp–Logan     

Polynomials: a theme which should not be forgotten

There is a definite movement to remove many of the topics concerning polynomials from the school curriculum. The purpose of this paper is to point out why this movement is misguided and should be reversed.     

Deposition of ZnS thin film by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis: effect of thickness on the crystallographic and electrical properties

Zinc sulfide (ZnS) thin films have been deposited on Si (1 0 0) substrate using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the films are (0 0 2) preferentially oriented with c-axis-oriented wurtzite structure. The crystallinity has been found to improve with film thickness in the 180–6000 nm range. Film structure has been analyzed by XRD, scanning electron microscope, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopies, while the stoichiometry has been verified by energy-dispersive spectroscopy and particle-induced X-ray emission techniques. Electrical properties of the grown films were characterized by current–voltage and capacitance–voltage measurements where, the films show better conducting behavior at higher thickness.     

Mathematical attitudes and semantic differentials

The semantic differential—one approach to attitude measurement— basically records a combination of a person's associations with a particular concept with a scaling procedure. This paper considers the implications of such a device for teachers of mathematics.
