Comparative study of holographic recording in cholesteric and nematic azo-containing side-chain polymers

For the first time a comparative study of holographic recording in planarly oriented films of nematic and cholesteric azobenzene-containing polymers was performed. The influence of temperature and light intensity on the values of diffraction efficiencies of holographic gratings was investigated. The kinetics of grating relaxation at different temperatures was studied. It was shown that the helical supramolecular structure of cholesteric copolymer causes a significant decrease of the diffraction efficiency in comparison with the one observed for the nematic state of the homopolymer.     

High-frequency magnetoimpedance in nanocomposites

The transmission of millimeter-range electromagnetic waves (30–50 GHz) through a magnetic nanocomposite thin film exhibiting tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) is calculated. The relative change of transmission coefficient in an applied magnetic field due to the magnetorefractive effect is approximately linear with TMR and strongly depends on nanocomposite resistivity and film thickness. The obtained results are in a good agreement with experiment.     

Oxidation of olefins with alkanesulfoperacids

Alkanesulfonic peracids RSO₄H effectively oxidize olefins to the corresponding epoxides. The kinetics and mechanism of this reaction are studied. It was shown that both the monomer and dimer form of the peracid act as oxidizing agents. The dependence of the weight constant of the reaction of monomer RSO₄H with substituted acyclic olefins on the structure of the latter is described by the Taft equation. Kinetics and products of the reaction of diazo compounds with SO2

Data were obtained on the composition of products and kinetics of the reaction of SO₂ with Ph(R)CN₂ (R=Ph, Me) in solutions of isooctane, 1,4-di-oxane, and ethanol at 295 K. A mechanism was proposed for the process in accordance with which the sulfene being formed participates in concurrent reactions with the starting reagents. Ductile-to-ductile transition in dispersely filled composites based on thermoplastic polymers

The fracture mechanism for rubber-filled composites based on gutta-percha, LDPE, medium-density PE, and rubber particles has been studied. An increase in the concentration of filler particles leads to a change in the stress-strain behavior of the composites from neck propagation to homogeneous plastic deformation. For the filled composites, the criterion for the ductile-to-ductile transition is the equality of yield and draw stresses. The critical concentration of rubber particles at the ductile-to-ductile transition is controlled by the ratio between the yield stress of matrix polymer and the neck propagation stress. Transition from neck propagation to homogeneous plastic flow of the material is accomplished under two conditions: the breaking strength of the polymer matrix should be higher than the yield stress, and stretching of the composite should not be accompanied by the formation of diamond cracks. The latter condition is fulfilled when the dimensions of rubber particles are below a certain critical value, which is determined by the ductility of the matrix.
