D3h‐Symmetric Porphyrin‐Based Rigid Macrocyclic Ligands for Multicofacial Multinuclear Complexes in a One‐Nanometer‐Sized Cavity

The one‐step synthesis of D_3h‐symmetric cyclic porphyrin trimers 1 composed of three 2,2′‐[4,4′‐bis(methoxycarbonyl)]bipyridyl moieties and three porphyrinatozinc moieties was achieved from a nickel‐mediated reductive coupling of meso‐5,15‐bis(6‐chloro‐4‐methoxycarbonylpyrid‐2‐yl)porphyrinatozinc. Although cyclic trimers 1 were obtained as a mixture that included other cyclic and acyclic porphyrin oligomers, an extremely specific separation was observed only for cyclic trimers 1 when using columns of silica gel modified with pyrenylethyl, cyanopropyl, and other groups. Structural analysis of cyclic trimers 1 was carried out by means of NMR spectroscopy and X‐ray crystallography. Treatment of an η³‐allylpalladium complex with a cyclic trimer gave a tris(palladium) complex containing three η³‐allylpalladium groups inside the space, which indicated that the bipyridyl moieties inside the ring could work as bidentate metalloligands.     

A novel and efficient synthesis of porphine

meso-Tetra(n-hexyloxycarbonyl)porphyrin was found to be converted into porphine, the mother compound of porphyrins, in a 77% yield when heated in aqueous sulfuric acid at 180 °C over 30 min under an inert atmosphere. The observation demonstrates that the substituted porphyrin serves as a novel and useful precursor for porphine.     

Mesomorphic properties of orthopalladated complexes of laterally substituted azobenzene derivatives, 2-alkoxycarbonyl-4-(4-ethoxyphenylazo)phenyl 4-methoxybenzoates

Homologous series of 2-alkoxycarbonyl-4-(4-ethoxyphenylazo)phenyl 4-methoxybenzoates (L) and their orthopalladated μ-chloro dimers (Pd₂Cl₂L₂) have been synthesized and their thermotropic phase transition behaviour has been characterized. The ligands, L, are three-ring nematogens with their central rings substituted in the 2-position by n-alkyl chains of varied length. The thermal stability of the nematic phases decreases rapidly with increasing side chain length and then levels off as the series is ascended. In every case the mesomorphic phase appears only over a small temperature range (less than 20° C). The orthopalladated species also proved to be nematogenic. Melting and clearing points rise on the average by 87° C and 126° C, respectively, and thus the temperature ranges of the nematic phases are enlarged considerably upon metallation. In relation to the observed stabilization of the nematic phases, particularly of higher homologues, a lath-like molecular structure, in which the side chains of the ligands fill up the clefts of the core part, has been deduced for a Pd2Cl2L2 homologue from its solution ¹H-NMR spectrum.     

Conformational effects on lipase-mediated acylations of 2-substituted cyclohexanols

Lipase-mediated acetylations of trans- and cis-2-substituted cyclohexanols gave the corresponding (1R)-cyclohexyl acetates and (1S)-cyclohexanols in high yields and ee, but c-4-tert-butyl-c-2-ethenyl-r-1-cyclohexanol was unreactive owing to the steric interaction between the axial OH group and the axial H atoms at the 3- and 5-positions. In the cis-isomer the OH group occupies an equatorial position to bind to the lipase, and less bulky axial alkenyl and alkynyl groups might not so much prevent acetylations than an alkyl group.     

Identification and determination of sulphamethazine and N4-acetylsulphamethazine in meat by high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection

A simple and selective method for the determination of sulphamethazine (SMT) and its metabolite, N4-acetylsulphamethazine (N4-AcSMT), in meat by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode-array detection was developed. The drugs were extracted from meat with 0.2% metaphosphoric acid-methanol (6:4), followed by a Bond-Elut C18 clean-up procedure. The HPLC separation was carried out on a Supersphere RP-18e column (125 X 4.0 mm I.D.) using 0.05 M sodium dihydrogenphosphate (pH 4.5)-acetonitrile (8:2) as the mobile phase at a flow-rate of 0.5 ml/min, and monitored with a photodiode-array detector. The recoveries of SMT and N4-AcSMT from meat fortified at 0.5 micrograms/g were 90.1-93.3 and 93.0-94.4%, respectively, with coefficients of variation of 1.9-3.2 and 1.5-2.7%. The limits of detection were 0.02 micrograms/g for each drug. SMT was found in ten samples of imported meat (12.5%) at levels ranging from 0.05 to 1.05 micrograms/g.     

Capacitance-conductance detector for high-pressure liquid chromatography. Application to alkaloids and fatty acids

Summary A new type of detector for high-pressure liquid chromatography has been designed. This detector is equipped with a RC resonance circuit, and is similar to the capacitance detector previously reported. It is operated as a capacitance detector with nonpolar eluents; while with polar solvents, it behaves as a conductance detector. Electrolytes such as salts, acids and bases are sensitively detected. The detector was successfully used for the detection of fatty acids and alkaloids.

Zusammenfassung Ein neuartiger Detektor für die Hochdruck-Flüssigchromatographie wurde entwickelt. Dieser ist mit einem Resonanzstromkreis ausgestattet und ähnelt dem kürzlich beschriebenen Kapazitanz-Detektor. Als solcher funktioniert er mit nichtpolaren Eluenten, während er sich mit polaren Lösungsmitteln wie ein Leitfähigkeitsdetektor verhält. Salze, Säuren und Basen werden empfindlich nachgewiesen. Das Gerät wurde zum Nachweis von Fettsäuren und Alkaloiden verwendet.

     

Synthesis of Urea‐Tethered Disaccharides in Water

A new method for the synthesis of urea‐linked disaccharides in aqueous media has been developed. The key feature of our approach is two strained Steyermark‐type gluco‐ and galactopyranosyl oxazolidinones. Each oxazolidinone is attached to a pyranose ring in a di‐equatorial trans‐annulation framework. Reaction of these oxazolidinones with 4‐aminohexopyranose in water proceeded smoothly to afford the urea‐tethered cellobiose and lactose analogues. The galactose‐type oxazolidinone proved to be more reactive than the glucose‐type, which is explained by the presence of an axial hydroxy group at C4 in the former.     

A [2]rotaxane capped by a cyclodextrin and a guest: formation of supramolecular [2]rotaxane polymer

A [2]rotaxane capped by a beta-cyclodextrin and a 2,4,6-trinitrophenyl group has been prepared by dissolving 6-aminocinnamoyl beta-cyclodextrin in water with 1-adamantane carboxylic acid and complexation with alpha-cyclodextrin followed by the reaction with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid sodium salt. The [2]rotaxane has been found to form supramolecular polymers by host-guest interactions.     

Synthesis and inversion barriers of undeca- and dodeca-substituted saddle shaped porphyrin complexes

Synthesis and barriers to inversion of a series of highly saddle shaped complexes are reported. The ΔG^≠ has decreased by 8 kJ mol⁻¹ at 243 K when the meso phenyl groups are replaced by bulkier 2,6-dichlorophenyl groups, and by 17 kJ mol⁻¹ when one of the peripheral ethyl groups is removed.
