In this Note, we return to the theory of characteristic modes which was introduced 30 years ago for electromagnetic scattering problems. A simple mathematical framework is proposed and complete definitions are given. The potential interest of this theory in terms of Radar Cross Section (RCS) analysis is then discussed, especially in the low frequency case. Solid-phase synthesis using a new polyacrylic resin : Synthesis of the fragment 14–21 of the amino acid sequence of histone H4

The solid-phase synthesis of the octapeptide 1 AcGly-Ala-Lys-Arg-His-Arg-Lys-ValOMe, which represents the fragment 14-21 of the amino acid sequence of the chromosomal histone H4, as well as of the structurally related nonapeptide 2 AcGly-Ala-Lys-Leu-Arg-His-Arg-Lys-ValOMe, is described using a new polyacrylic resin containing a glycolamide ester linkage(resin-NHCO-CH₂-OCO-peptide) acting as a labile anchoring moiety between the resin and the peptide.After elongation of the polypeptide chain using classical protecting groups, i.e. t-butyloxycarbonyl for the α-NH₂ function, benzyloxycarbonyl, nitro and 2,4-dinitrophenyl groups for the side-chains of Lys, Arg and His respectively, both peptides 1 and 2 were obtained in good yields and with a high purity as shown by high-pressure liquid chromatography, by amino-acid analysis and by high-field proton NMR spectroscopy.This work demonstrates the ability of the newly introduced polyacrylic resin to act as a convenient support for solid-phase peptide synthesis.     

Reductive complexation of cycloheptatrienes by iron pentacarbonyl and catalytic sodium borohydride

Fe(CO)5 and a catalytic amount of sodium borohydride react with cycloheptatrienes in protic solvents to yield the corresponding tricarbonyl(eta 4-1,3-diene)iron complexes in a one-pot procedure, which has been found to be particularly efficient for the synthesis of the useful tricarbonyl(cyclo-heptadiene)iron complex.     

Chemo- and regioselective synthesis of 2-alkylidenetetrahydrofurans bearing a chiral sulfur atom by domino reactions of sulfoximines

The addition of the dianion of Johnson’s sulfoximine to α,ω-halogenoesters evolves by an intramolecular heterocyclization to provide a direct access to 2-alkylidenetetrahydrofurans bearing a chiral sulfur atom via domino addition-elimination/S_N reactions.     

Analysis of Plant–Plant Interactions Reveals the Presence of Potent Antileukemic Compounds

A method to identify anticancer compounds in plants was proposed based on the hypothesis that these compounds are primarily present in plants to provide them with an ecological advantage over neighboring plants and other competitors. According to this view, identifying plants that contain compounds that inhibit or interfere with the development of other plant species may facilitate the discovery of novel anticancer agents. The method was developed and tested using Magnolia grandiflora, Gynoxys verrucosa, Picradeniopsis oppositifolia, and Hedyosmum racemosum, which are plant species known to possess compounds with cytotoxic activities. Plant extracts were screened for growth inhibitory activity, and then a thin-layer chromatography bioautography assay was conducted. This located the major antileukemic compounds 1, 2, 4, and 5 in the extracts. Once the active compounds were located, they were extracted and purified, and their structures were determined. The growth inhibitory activity of the purified compounds showed a significant correlation with their antileukemic activity. The proposed approach is rapid, inexpensive, and can easily be implemented in areas of the world with high biodiversity but with less access to advanced facilities and biological assays.     

Structure and photoconductive behaviour of a sanidic liquid crystal

A series of [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene-2,7-dicarboxylate derivatives consisting of a flat, conjugated aromatic moiety containing sulphur hetero-atoms and substituted by terminal chains - ethyl, decyl, Z-4-decenyl or 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethyl - has been synthesized. These materials exhibit a smectic liquid crystalline phase, the stability of which was found to be strongly dependent on the length and the nature of the terminal chains. In the mesophase, the molecular arrangement within the smectic layer is characterized by a local stacking of the rigid parts similar to that found in discotic columnar systems. Finally, clear photoconductive behaviour was found in mechanically aligned samples of these liquid crystals.     

Multiresidue determination of 256 pesticides in lavandin essential oil by LC/ESI/sSRM: advantages and drawbacks of a sampling method involving evaporation under nitrogen

The determination of 256 multiclass pesticides in lavandin essential oil has been performed by liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry using the scheduled selected reaction monitoring mode available on a quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometer. With the aim of improving the limits of quantification (LOQs) of the target molecules, a sampling step based on evaporation of the essential oil under a nitrogen flow assisted by controlled heating was tested. The LOQs determined in this case were compared with the values obtained with the classic dilution preparation method. With sampling by dilution, 247 pesticides were detected and quantified at low concentration, with 74 % of the pesticides having LOQs of 10 μg L^-1 or less. With the evaporation method, a global improvement of the LOQs was observed, with lower LOQs for 92 active substances and LOQs of 10 μg L^-1 or less for 82.8 % of the pesticides. Almost twice as many active substances had an LOQ of 1 μg L^-1 or less when the evaporation method was used. Some pesticides exhibited poor recovery or high variance caused by volatilization or degradation during the evaporation step. This behavior was evidenced by the case of thiophanate-methyl, which is degraded to carbendazim.
