Influence of Zn Diffusion on Bandwidth and Extinction in MQW Electroabsorption Modulators Buried with Semi-Insulating InP

A comprehensive analysis of multi-quantum-well electroabsorption modulators buried with semi-insulating (SI)-InP is presented. We quantitatively demonstrate that suppression of Zn diffusion into the burying and optical core layers plays a key role in high-speed and high-extinction operation.     

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of carbanions—VI. Cumyl-, α-methylbenzyl- and benzyl carbanions

The proton magnetic resonance spectra of the three title carbanions have been observed in THF with potassium as a counter ion. The ortho-protons in the α-methylbenzyl carbanion are nonequivalent at room temperature. This shows that the α-carbon in this carbanion is in the near-sp² configuration. The aromatic proton chemical shifts of the benzylpotassium obtained here are at higher shielding than those of benzyllithium reported previously by Sandel and Freedman. This seems to arise from the different ionic nature of the bonds between carbon and metal in the carbanions.     

Brownian dynamics simulations for suspension of ellipsoids in liquid crystalline phase under simple shear flows

Brownian dynamics simulations of shear flows are carried out for various suspensions of ellipsoids interacting via the Gay-Berne potential. In this simulation all the systems of the suspension are in a liquid crystalline phase at rest. In a shear flow they exhibit various motions of the director depending on the shear rate: the continuous rotation, the intermittent rotation, the wagging-like oscillation, and the aligning. The director is almost always out of the vorticity plane when it rotates, that is the kayaking. The number density of the system and the inter-particle potential intensity significantly affect the shear rate dependence of orientation. In particular, the continuous rotation of director is maintained to higher shear rates for the system with a stronger potential. Furthermore, the rheological properties are examined. The shear-thinning in viscosity is observed, but the negative first normal difference is not obtained.     

Determination of fructosyl amino acids and fructosyl peptides in protease-digested blood sample by a flow-injection system with an enzyme reactor.

A flow-injection system with an enzyme reactor was proposed for the measurement of fructosyl amino acids and fructosyl peptides in protease-digested blood samples. A fructosyl-amino acid oxidase (FAOX-TE) and two fructosyl-peptide oxidases (FPOX-CE and FPOX-CET) were covalently immobilized onto an inert support. They were used as the enzyme reactor in a FIA system with a hydrogen peroxide electrode. In particular, the FPOX-CET reactor possessed high selectivity for the detection of fructosyl valine (FV) and fructosyl valyl histidine (FVH) and an excellent operational stability. The proposed FIA system with the FPOX-CET reactor responded linearly to the concentration of FV over the dynamic range of 7.8 x 10(-6) to 5.8 x 10(-4) M. The present method could be successfully applied to the assay of FV and FVH in the protease-digested blood samples.     

Carbon chemical shifts of 1,1-diphenylethylene and α-methylstyrene dimer dianions

The natural abundance C-13 NMR spectra of 1,1-diphenylethylene and α-methylstyrene dimer dianions have been obtained using the proton noise decoupling technique. The extra negative charge distributions in the carbanions have been discussed and compared with those obtained from the proton chemical shifts. The chemical shifts of the two ortho carbons in a phenyl ring are equivalent to each other for the former carbanion but not for the latter.     

Information Loss as a Foundational Principle for the Second Law of Thermodynamics

In a previous paper (Duncan, T.L., Semura, J.S. in Entropy 6:21, 2004) we considered the question, “What underlying property of nature is responsible for the second law?” A simple answer can be stated in terms of information: The fundamental loss of information gives rise to the second law. This line of thinking highlights the existence of two independent but coupled sets of laws: Information dynamics and energy dynamics. The distinction helps shed light on certain foundational questions in statistical mechanics. For example, the confusion surrounding previous “derivations” of the second law from energy dynamics can be resolved by noting that such derivations incorporate one or more assumptions that correspond to the loss of information. In this paper we further develop and explore the perspective in which the second law is fundamentally a law of information dynamics.     

Anisotropic special transition of semi-infinite systems in the 1/n expansion

The effect of the surface magnetic anisotropy on the critical behavior at surfaces is studied by using the 1/n expansion technique. Several surface critical exponents are obtained for the anisotropic special transition at arbitrary spatial dimensions.     

Optically specific detection of D- and L-lactic acids by a flow-injection dual biosensor system with on-line microdialysis sampling.

A flow-injection dual biosensor system with microdialysis sampling is proposed for the simultaneous determination of D-lactic and L-lactic acids. The dialysate from the microdialysis tube is delivered to a sample loop of the six-way autoinjector and then automatically injected into the flow-injection line with a dual enzyme electrode arranged in perpendicular to the flow direction. The dual enzyme electrode is constructed by hybridizing a poly(1,2-diaminobenzene) film into two sensing parts which respond selectively to D-lactic and L-lactic acids, respectively, without any cross-reactivity. The proposed flow-injection analysis method can be successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of D,L-lactic acids in alcoholic beverages.
