Existence globale pour l'équation de Smoluchowski continue non homogène et comportement asymptotique des solutions

We prove global existence of solutions to the continuous nonhomogeneous Smoluchowski equation for coagulation rates satisfying a more general structure condition than the Galkin–Tupchiev monotony hypothesis considered in (Ph. Laurençot, S. Mischler, Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 162 (1) (2002) 45–99). The Smoluchowski coagulation rate fulfils this condition as well as some rates which vanish on the diagonal. Under the condition of positivity of the coagulation rate outside of the diagonal we prove that solutions tend to 0 in the large time asymptotic. Etude de la Fragmentation de Derives Substitues Polycycliques du Benzodioxinne-1,4

The mass spectra of five polycyclic 1,4 benzodioxin derivatives have been studied. The breakdown patterns of the more important ions have been suggested by comparison with three compounds in a deuterated specific position. Some rearrangements are produced by specific hydrogen migration and a few others after scrambling.     

Production of N,H, and NH active species in N2-H2 dc flowing discharges

Densities of N, H, and NH active species have been detected by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in N₂-xH₂ dc flowing discharges. A peak value of N atom densities far x = 0.2–0.5% and a plateau value of H atom densities between x = 1% and 90% in post-discharge conditions (0.05 sec, p = 2 torr) has been found. Comparison between LIF measurements of N atoms and the trend of the N₂(B, v = II) population shows that the emission from this state can be used for monitoring N atoms. New mono- and bis-carbene samarium complexes: synthesis, X-ray crystal structures and reactivity

New samarium carbene complexes have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis; the carbenic nature was assessed by reactivity studies.     

From galactose to highly functionalized seven- and eight-membered carbocyclic rings by ring-closing metathesis

[reaction: see text]A short synthesis of highly functionalized seven- and eight-membered carbocyclic rings from galactose derivatives has been achieved. The key steps are a zinc-mediated reductive ring opening of 6-iodogalactopyranoses and a subsequent ring-closing olefin metathesis using Grubbs' ruthenium catalyst.     

Analysis of sterol oxidation products in foods

The main aspects related to the analysis of sterol oxidation products (SOP) in foods are comprehensively reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on the critical and controversial points of this analysis because these points affect crucial analytical parameters such as precision, accuracy, selectivity, and sensitivity. The effect of sample preparation and the conditions of quantification by gas chromatography and liquid chromatography on these parameters are also reviewed. The results show that, in order to choose an adequate method to analyze SOP in a certain food, the analyst must consider its SOP concentration and matrix complexity. The term SOP includes both cholesterol oxidation products (COP) and phytosterol oxidation products (POP). The state of the art of COP and POP analysis is quite different; many more studies have dealt with the analysis of COP than of POP. However, most of the results presented here about COP analysis may be extrapolated to POP analysis because both groups of compounds show similar structures and characteristics.     

Study of silica supported PtxNi1-x catalysts by ion scattering spectroscopy

As supported Pt_xNi_1–x catalysts are used for hydrogenation reactions, it seemed necessary to assess the surface composition of the reduced samples. To approach the usual reduction conditions we applied in situ reduction in a reaction chamber (1 mbar H₂ up to 500 °C) placed in ultra high vacuum recipient (UHV: 10^–9 to 2.10^–10mbar). All ion scattering spectroscopy measurements were performed in UHV. Charging of the samples was avoided by electron bombardment (5 eV). The variation of the surface composition was determined after subsequent sputtering, thermal treatment at 500 °C and during oxygen adsorption. A comparison with previous results of surface compositions of binary alloys (polycrystalline foils [1, 2] and single crystals Pt_xNi_1–x [3]) is given.Dedicated to Professor Dr. rer. nat. Dr. h. c. Reversal of facial selectivity in complex Diels-Alder reactions

A complex Diels-Alder reaction between a semi-cyclic diene with allylic silyloxy substituents and a bromo enone presented an unusual diastereoselectivity: attack of the diene occured on its more hindered face, and this reversal of selectivity was shown to be induced by the presence of a bromo substituent in the dienophile.
