A geometric formula for Haefliger knots

Haefliger has shown that a smooth embedding of the (4k−1)-sphere in the 6k-sphere can be knotted in the smooth sense. In this paper, we give a formula with which we can detect the isotopy class of such a Haefliger knot. The formula is expressed in terms of the geometric characteristics of an extension, analogous to a Seifert surface, of the given embedding. In particular, the Hopf invariant associated to the extension plays a crucial role. This leads us to a new characterisation of Haefliger knots.     

Synthesis and characterization of 6‐ and 12‐arm star polymers by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of St and MA from dendritic TIPNO‐based hexafunctional and dodecafunctional macroinitiators

Dendritic multifunctional macroinitiators having six and 12 TIPNO‐based alkoxyamines, TIPNO‐6 and TIPNO‐12 , were synthesized and used in the living radical polymerization of styrene (St), methyl acrylate (MA), N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMAAm), and isoprene (IP). The polymerizations of St initiated with TIPNO‐6 gave 6‐arm star polymers with narrow polydispersities of 1.14–1.18. In the polymerizations of MA initiated with TIPNO‐6 and TIPNO‐12 , the influences of added TIPNO on the polydispersity indexes (PDIs) of the resulting star polymers were first investigated, and this led to the successful formation of poly(MA) star polymers with narrow polydispersities (1.10–1.18). Moreover, the polymerizations of DMAAm and IP from TIPNO‐6 in the presence or absence of TIPNO were briefly investigated. The benzyl ether bonds of the poly(St) and poly(MA) star polymers were cleaved by treating with Me₃SiI or Pd/C, and the resulting arm's parts were analyzed with SEC. The PDIs of the resulting arm parts were low (1.19–1.23), and the M_ns agreed with the M_n,theor, indicating that the poly(St) and poly(MA) star polymers had well‐controlled arms. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation of a cyclodextrin dimer linked with a bis(picolinyl)cystine moiety and its intra- and intermolecular inclusion behavior

A novel cyclodextrin (CD) dimer linked with a bis(picolinyl)cystine (Cys) moiety was prepared by the coupling of Boc-protected Cys with amino-modified CDs, followed by deprotection of the Boc groups and bispicolinylation. The dimer showed less affinity to an organic guest molecule compared to that of a native CD monomer. It was attributed to an intramolecular inclusion of the pyridine moiety into CD cavity. The dimer caused significant increase of its organic guest affinity by an addition of a copper ion. The included pyridine group may come out of a CD cavity to bind the copper ion and the two CDs included cooperatively and intermolecularly a guest molecule with high affinity.     

(Triisopropylsilyl)acetaldehyde acetal as a novel protective group for 1,2-diols

(Triisopropylsilyl)acetaldehyde dimethyl acetal (TIPS-ADMA) was synthesized from chlorotriisopropylsilane in three steps. Cyclic and acyclic 1,2-diols can be transformed to (triisopropylsilyl)ethylidene acetals (TIPS-AA). Removal of the acetal by LiBF₄ regenerates the starting diol in excellent yield even in the presence of an acetonide of 1,2-diol. The TIPS-AA group can survive under the deprotection conditions of the acetonide in acetic acid at 80 °C. Selective protection of 2,3- and 4,6-diols for O-methyl d-mannoside with TIPS-ADMA and selective deprotection of the acetals have been achieved.     

Electrochiroptical systems based on biphenyl-2,2′-diyl-type dicationic dyes: strong chiroptical signals through the transmission of point chirality to axial chirality

Huge CD amplitude (A = +538) was attained by diastereomeric preference (50% de) for the title dication with two bis[4-(R)-sec-butoxyphenyl]methylium units in benzene at 23 °C. Intramolecular π-π stacking is the origin for effective transmission of point chirality to axial chirality to attain the chiroptical enhancement of 400-times. Thanks to the strong CD signaling, chiroptical changes upon electrolysis could be readily detected, thus realizing a new class of electrochiroptical response systems. Chiroptical properties could also be modified by solvent polarity.     

The mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen production from gaseous methanol and water: IR spectroscopic approach

IR spectroscopic and volumetric study under reaction conditions of the mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen production from gaseous methanol and water revealed that CO₂ and H₂ were produced by reaction between adsorbed CH₃O(ad) and H₂O. Another reaction path for H₂ production, CH₃ OH(ad) → H₂ + HCHO, was suggested which is dominant in the absence of water.
