Brownian dynamics simulations of shear flows are carried out for various suspensions of ellipsoids interacting via the Gay-Berne potential. In this simulation all the systems of the suspension are in a liquid crystalline phase at rest. In a shear flow they exhibit various motions of the director depending on the shear rate: the continuous rotation, the intermittent rotation, the wagging-like oscillation, and the aligning. The director is almost always out of the vorticity plane when it rotates, that is the kayaking. The number density of the system and the inter-particle potential intensity significantly affect the shear rate dependence of orientation. In particular, the continuous rotation of director is maintained to higher shear rates for the system with a stronger potential. Furthermore, the rheological properties are examined. The shear-thinning in viscosity is observed, but the negative first normal difference is not obtained.  相似文献

A wavy texture occurs in the flows of liquid crystalline polymers through a slit cell. In the present paper the development of the wavy texture is examined in pressure-driven startup flows for four types of slit cells, using a liquid crystalline solution of 50 wt% hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC). There exists a comparatively long induction period until the wavy texture appears after the startup of the flow, and the induction time decreases with increasing apparent shear rate. However, it is found that the apparent shear strain at which the wavy texture emerges is independent of the apparent shear rate though the value of the apparent shear strain slightly varies with the type of flow cell. Furthermore, the light scattering experiments are carried out to examine the structure of wavy texture. After the startup of the flow, a homogeneous pattern of the light scattering quickly shrink in size and a spike pattern perpendicular to the flow direction is emphasized. While the wavy texture is seen, the ellipsoidal pattern of light scattering oscillates with the same frequency as the passage of the wavy texture. A structure of scattering objects in the wavy texture is proposed, based on the observation of change in the light scattering pattern with time.  相似文献

The numerical simulation of the viscoelastic flow through a wavy channel was carried out using the modified Giesekus model. It was found that the excess pressure loss relates to the stretch-thickening properties of elongational viscosity and the geometry of the wavy channel through a large elongational component of the flow at the winding part of the channel. The profiles of the axial component of the velocity become significantly asymmetric when the excess pressure loss occurs. Furthermore, the velocity profiles of a 0.1 wt% solution of polyacrylamide were measured using laser Doppler velocimetry. The results of these measurements are compared to the numerical results. The start-up flow of polymeric solutions in an abrupt contraction channel with a rectangular cross-section was experimentally studied. Aqueous solutions with 0.2 wt% and 1.0 wt% of polyacrylamide were used as test fluids. Temporal changes in velocity were measured with a laser Doppler velocimeter. The velocity overshot just after the onset of the flow. The changes in velocity caused by the rearrangement of the velocity distribution were observed. A three-dimensional flow structure and the development of a vortex region were found near the entrance to the contraction. A decrease in the axial velocity just upstream from the contraction was observed. The velocity profile is related to the three-dimensional nature of the flow and the elongational rheological properties of the test fluid. The experimental results indicate that three-dimensional analysis of viscoelastic flows is required especially for the flow in rectangular channels. Computer simulations of the shear flow for the suspensions of oblong-particles were performed using nonequilibrium Brownian Dynamics (BD). The model particle is a rigid body made up of linearly connected spheres with the interparticle potential of a repulsive Lennard-Jones potential. The length-over-width ratios of the oblong-particles used in the present calculations are 5/3 and 3. In the concentrated suspensions high orientation is easily induced by shear at low shear rates. The systems of the oblong-particles exhibit the structural transition that causes the significant change in the rheological properties at high shear rates. Furthermore, the dependence of the length-over-width ratio of the particle is examined. Received: 16 June 1997 Accepted: 3 February 1998  相似文献

A compact absorption spectrometer with a midinfrared tunable quantum cascade laser operating at 4.86 microm (2054 cm(-1)) is used to measure lower concentrations of carbonyl sulfide (COS) in air. A detection sensitivity of approximately 30 parts in 10(9) of COS and the selectivity of two stable isotopes, 12C(16)O32S and 12C(16)O34S, are demonstrated. Specifically, the feasibility of detecting COS in expired human breath as a potential noninvasive medical diagnostic tool is investigated.  相似文献
