A simple and sensitive method for the determination of hydroxylamine in fresh-water samples using hypochlorite followed by gas chromatography.

A new and simple method for the determination of hydroxylamine in environmental water, such as fresh rivers and lakes using hypochlorite, followed by its gas choromatographic detection, has been developed. A glass vial filled with sample water was sealed by a butyl-rubber stopper and aluminum cap without head-space, and then sodium hypochlorite solution was injected into the vial through a syringe to convert hydroxylamine to nitrous oxide. The head-space in the glass vial was prepared with 99.9% grade N2 using a gas-tight syringe. After the glass vial was shaken for a few minutes, nitrous oxide in the gas-phase was measured by a gas chromatograph with an electron-capture detector. The dissolved nitrous oxide in the liquid-phase was calculated according to the solubility formula. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of fresh-water samples taken from Iu river and Hii river, flowing into brackish Lakes Nakaumi and Shinji, respectively.     

Variation of free volume parameters of polyalkylmethacrylate derivatives in the range from 15 to 300 K probed by positron annihilation lifetime measurement

Positron annihilation lifetime measurements of PMMA, PEMA, PiPMA, PnPMA and PnBMA were performed in the temperature range between 15 and 300 K, where , and relaxational transitions occur for these polyalkylmethacrylates. The variations of free volume size and content calculated from the longest lifetime component against temperature are correlated to the results obtained by dielectric, viscoelastic and dynamic mechanical relaxation data of the polymers. The variations of free volume sizes and contents, apparent free volume fraction and size distribution of the polyalkylmethacrylates are well correlated with the rotational transitions of side chains. The location of free volumes, in which positronium annihilates can be estimated near the vicinity of alkyl groups bound to oxygen atom of side ester chains.     

Analysis of tea components by high-performance liquid chromatography and high-performance capillary electrophoresis

Tea is one of the most popular beverages in the world. The number of reports on the analysis of tea components, especially for catechins, has recently been increasing. We review the recent reports on the analysis of tea components using the analytical methods of high-performance liquid chromatography and high-performance capillary electrophoresis.     

Friction coefficient and structural transition in a poly(acrylamide) gel

The friction coefficient between the polymer network of an opaque poly(acrylamide) gel and water is measured as a function of the mole fraction of cross linker. The friction coefficients of opaque gels are 4 to 5 orders of magnitude smaller than those of the transparent gels. This drastic decrease in friction occurs when the mole fraction of cross linker is 0.2. In opaque gels, the friction coefficient of gels and the mole fraction of cross linker are related by a power law. The network structure of the opaque gels used in the friction measurements is examined with a confocal laser scanning microscope. The opaque gel network consists of a fractal aggregate of colloidal particles. The radius of particles and the volume occupied by the particles depend on the mole fraction of cross linker. Both relationships are well described by the power laws. The power law of the friction coefficient is well explained in terms of the power laws of the structural parameters and the Stokes equation of the hydrodynamic friction for the spherical particle. It indicates that the friction of the opaque gel is determined simply by the structure of the polymer network.     

Identification and determination of sulphamethazine and N4-acetylsulphamethazine in meat by high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection

A simple and selective method for the determination of sulphamethazine (SMT) and its metabolite, N4-acetylsulphamethazine (N4-AcSMT), in meat by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode-array detection was developed. The drugs were extracted from meat with 0.2% metaphosphoric acid-methanol (6:4), followed by a Bond-Elut C18 clean-up procedure. The HPLC separation was carried out on a Supersphere RP-18e column (125 X 4.0 mm I.D.) using 0.05 M sodium dihydrogenphosphate (pH 4.5)-acetonitrile (8:2) as the mobile phase at a flow-rate of 0.5 ml/min, and monitored with a photodiode-array detector. The recoveries of SMT and N4-AcSMT from meat fortified at 0.5 micrograms/g were 90.1-93.3 and 93.0-94.4%, respectively, with coefficients of variation of 1.9-3.2 and 1.5-2.7%. The limits of detection were 0.02 micrograms/g for each drug. SMT was found in ten samples of imported meat (12.5%) at levels ranging from 0.05 to 1.05 micrograms/g.     

Studies on aldose reductase inhibitors from natural products. II. Active components of a Paraguayan crude drug "Para-parai mí," Phyllanthus niruri

Aldose reductase (AR) inhibitory activity-directed fractionation of the 70% ethanolic extract of Para-parai mí, Phyllanthus niruri, has led to the isolation of three active components, ellagic acid (1), brevifolin carboxylic acid (4) and ethyl brevifolin carboxylate (5). Among them, 1 showed the highest inhibitory activity, being about 6 times more potent than quercitrin, which is a known natural inhibitor of AR.     

Chemo-enzymatic Synthesis of Novel Oligo-N-acetyllactosamine Derivatives having a β(1-4)–β(1-6) Repeating Unit by Using Transition State Analogue Substrate

Chitinase-catalyzed hydrolytic and transglycosylating behavior of 1,2-oxazoline derivative of N-acetyllactosamine (LacNAc-oxa) 1 has been investigated. An extremely rapid hydrolysis (ring-opening of the oxazoline moiety) could be observed, suggesting that 1 behaves as a transition state analogue substrate for chitinase A1 (Bacillus circulans WL-12). This disaccharide monomer 1 was found to polymerize under basic conditions, giving rise to novel oligosaccharides having a β(1-4)–β(1-6) repeating unit in the main chain. The degree of polymerization of the resulting oligosaccharides was up to 5. This is the first example of enzymatic glycosylation reaction forming a β(1-6) bond catalyzed by chitinase.     

Formation of secondary ozonides in the gas-phase ozonolysis of simple alkenes

Secondary propene ozonide and isobutene ozonide were formed in the gas-phase ozonolysis of ethene with added acetaldehyde and acetone, respectively. Combined with the formation of hydroperoxymethyl formate and methoxymethyl hydroperoxide in the ethene-ozone reaction system in the presence of HCOOH and CH₃OH, respectively, formation of the secondary ozonides reveals a close similarity between the gas-phase and the liquid-phase ozonolysis of alkenes.
