Manuals in orthogonal categories

The notion of a manual, introduced and investigated in detail by Foulis, Randall, and their followers, has turned out to be further reaching than its originators had envisaged. Its omnipresence is comparable with the notion of a sheaf, whose significance is well recognized by every pure and applied mathematician. The principal concern of this paper is to give an appropriate vehicle, as general as possible, by which the theory of manuals can be developed. The vehicle is called an orthogonal category, which is akin to the notion of a category with coproducts. Orthogonal categories provide also a new perspective on the notion of a sheaf over a complete Boolean algebra, deepening our comprehension of Boolean mathematics and paving the way to quantum mathematics.     

Stage-specific and age-dependent profiles of zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium in rat seminiferous tubules

Stage-specific and age-dependent profiles of zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium in testis were examined in Wistar rats by both inductively coupled argon plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with a microdissection technique and in situ elemental imaging of micro-PIXE analysis. The young adult animals (10 weeks old) contained higher levels of zinc and manganese in the seminiferous tubules at stages VII-VIII than stages XI through VI and IX-X and the levels were higher than those of the immature and old animals. Copper and selenium levels at stages VII-VIII of the young adult animals were also higher than those of the immature and old animals. In stages VII and VIII, zinc was higher in the central area of the seminiferous epithelium, where spermatozoa were localized, demonstrating a cell-specific property. Dicationic ((−)-sparteine)palladium-catalyzed enantioselective aldol reaction of aldehydes with 1-phenyl-1-trimethylsilyloxyethene, proceeding via a palladium enolate

A dicationic ((−)-sparteine)palladium complex underwent a superior catalytic enantioselective aldol reaction of aldehydes with 1-phenyl-1-trimethylsilyloxyethene performing satisfactorily, starting with ((−)-sparteine)PdCl₂ and AgSbF₆ as catalyst precursors (1 mol % loading) in the presence of 3 Å molecular sieves over the reaction.     

A facile non-oxidative method for synthesizing 1,3-disubstituted pyrroles from pyrrolidine and aldehydes

Reactions of pyrrolidine with 2 equiv of aldehydes without any catalyst in a pressurized vessel at 140–200 °C yielded 1,3-disubstituted pyrroles. -Branched aldehydes gave fairly good yields of the corresponding products by this method, which provides a facile non-oxidative procedure for synthesizing 1,3-dialkylpyrroles from inexpensive pyrrolidine and aldehydes.     

Azurocidin induces elastinolytic activity of medullasin

Addition of azurocidin, a protein in granulocytes similar to serine proteases but has no protease activity because of replacement of the active serine residue by glycine, to the incubation mixture containing medullasin induced elastinolytic activity of medullasin. Both medullasin and human leukocyte elastase were already shown to have negligible elastinolytic activity (Aoki, Y. et al. J. Biochem. 114, 122, 1993). Elastinolytic activity of medullasin was induced dose-dependently by the addition of azurocidin. Medullasin activity determined by using apo-ornithine transaminase or casein as substrates or that by N-methoxy-succinyl-(Ala)₂-Pro-Val-p-nitroanilide as substrate remained unchanged when azurocidin was added to the tube containing medullasin. Therefore, azurocidin is considered to cause an appearance of elastinolytic activity of medullasin without affecting the protease activity of it.     

Improvement of Dispersion and Release Properties of Nifedipine in Suppositories by Complexation with 2-Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin

Geometries, electronic properties and NMR-shielding of cucurbit[5]uril, decamethylcucurbit[5]uril, cucurbit[6]uril, cucurbit[7]uril, and cucurbit[8]uril are investigated with DFT calculations. All molecules are highly symmetrical with a distinct geometric flexibility. In addition with a characteristic partial charge distribution these findings account for their chemical complex building ability.
