THE INFLUENCE OF LIGHT UPON SEED GERMINATION. POSSIBLE INTERPRETATIONS OF DATA

Abstract— The response of seeds to irradiation by white light varies with the species: induction of germination, inhibition of germination or both according to the time-irradiation. The low energy reaction (LER) which acts via phytochrome can explain many cases of influence of light upon germination. It seems possible that a second reaction, the high energy reaction (HER), acts through another photoreceptor.

The alkaline hydrolysis of propargyl 3-chlorocarbanilates was investigated kinetically using uv spectropotometry. The cyclization to 4-methoylene-2-oxazolisinones proceeds via the numcleophilic attack of the substrate anion concomitantly with that of the hydroxide ion on the triple bond. The nucleophilic attack leads directly to the heterocycle whereas the hydroxide ion attack gives rise to a ketocarbamate which is then cyclized to the oxazolidione.     

Synthesis of sugar-based ethenyl ethers through a vinyl bis-sulfone methodology

The recently devised route to ethenyl ethers—i.e. 1,2-bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethylene (BPSE)-mediated conversion of alcohols into β-alkoxyvinyl sulfones followed by reductive desulfonylation—has been applied in the carbohydrate field to the synthesis of a number of vinyl-functionalised monosaccharides, a number of which had not been prepared via alternative routes.     

The not-so-peculiar case of calcium oxide: a weakness in atomic natural orbital basis sets for calcium

Atomic natural orbital (ANO) basis sets for calcium may produce surprisingly poor atomic and molecular properties and energetics. The weaknesses in these basis sets may be traced primarily to deficiencies within the sets of d functions which are incapable of effectively correlating the 3s and 3p electrons. Examples are given which show that addition of tight d functions to the ANO basis is required to achieve qualitatively correct energetics and structures for conventionally bonded calcium compounds.     

“Heteroglycals” As New Potential Glycosidase Inhibitors. Synthetic Approaches From D-Arabinose

Within the frame of an ongoing project on glycosidase inhibitors, we have been interested in the synthesis of “heteroglycals”, namely, glycal analogues with sulfur or nitrogen in the ring. Glycals² are well known for their applications in sugar chemistry in particular for glycosyl transfer.³ They are also known as glycosidase inhibitors through a slow chemical reaction with the enzyme. Recently exo-glycals emerged as a new class of glycals⁴ which showed interesting features as glycosidase inhibitors but also as precursors of glycomimetics such as C-glycosides.⁵ We have undertaken investigations on related heteroglycals: such compounds are of interest because they combine a planar geometry at the anomeric center and a possible charge site - both elements known to be important to mimic the transition state of the enzymatic glycoside hydrolysis process.⁶     

A New Approach for the C-Alkylation of Unsaturated Sugars Involving the Benzothiazol-2-Ylthio Leaving Group

ABSTRACT

The leaving ability of the benzothiazol-2-ylthio group was applied to the C-alkylation of a 2,3-enopyranoside model structure. Coordination of the organometallic reagent to the thio-heterocyclic moiety was responsible for a stereospecific syn conjugate alkyl attack.     

Spin-1/2 Maxwell Fields

Requiring covariance of Maxwell's equations without a priori imposing charge invariance allows for both spin-1 and spin-1/2 transformations of the complete Maxwell field and current. The spin-1/2 case yields new transformation rules, with new invariants, for all traditional Maxwell field and source quantities. The accompanying spin-1/2 representations of the Lorentz group employ the Minkowski metric, and consequently the primary spin-1/2 Maxwell invariants are also spin-1 invariants; for example, ²–A ², E ²–B ²+2i EB–(₀ +A)². The associated Maxwell Lagrangian density is also the same for both spin-1 and spin-1/2 fields. However, in the spin-1/2 case, standard field and source quantities are complex and both charge and gauge invariance are lost. Requiring the potentials to satisfy the Klein–Gordon equation equates the Maxwell and field-potential equations with two Dirac equations of the Klein–Gordon mass, and thus one complex Klein–Gordon Maxwell field describes either two real vector fields or two Dirac fields, all of the same mass.     

Real-time increase in depth of field of an uncooled thermal camera using several phase-mask technologies

Imaging systems that combine a phase mask in the pupil and digital postprocessing may have better performance than conventional ones. We have built such a system to enhance the depth of field of an uncooled thermal camera. The phase masks are binary, their structures are optimized thanks to an image quality criterion, and they have been realized with three different technologies that give equivalent results. The deconvolution postprocessing is performed in real time with a graphics processing unit. A significant increase of the depth of field of a factor 3 has been obtained.
