Body waves in fractured porous media saturated by two immiscible newtonian fluids

A study of body waves in fractured porous media saturated by two fluids is presented. We show the existence of four compressional and one rotational waves. The first and third compressional waves are analogous to the fast and slow compressional waves in Biot's theory. The second compressional wave arises because of fractures, whereas the fourth compressional wave is associated with the pressure difference between the fluid phases in the porous blocks. The effects of fractures on the phase velocity and attenuation coefficient of body waves are numerically investigated for a fractured sandstone saturated by air and water phases. All compressional waves except the first compressional wave are diffusive-type waves, i.e., highly attenuated and do not exist at low frequencies.Now at Izmir Institute of Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Gaziosmanpasa Bulvari, No.16, Cankaya, Izmir, Turkey.     

Synthesis of the azocino[4,3‐b]indole core structure for the synthesis of strychnos alkaloids

The synthesis of compound 12 which has a hexahydro‐1,5‐methanoazocino[4,3‐b]indole structure for the synthesis of pentacyclic strychnos type alkaloids (tubifolin and tubifolidine) is described. Many new compounds 5–12 have also been synthesized.     

Radionuclides in a sediment trap and bottom sediment samples from the eastern Turkish coast of the Black Sea

Summary Radionuclide (¹³⁷Cs, ²³⁸U, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K) concentrations were determined in a sediment trap and bottom sediment samples collected from a station at the eastern Turkish coast of the Black Sea. The specific activity of the ¹³⁷Cs radionuclide in the settling particles ranged from 0.04±0.01 to 0.10±0.02 Bq^. g^-1dry weight. The calculated flux rate of the ¹³⁷Cs was between 0.37 and 2.59 Bq^. m^-2. d^-1in the sampling periods of 2002 and 2003. The ¹³⁷Cs concentration in the bottom sediment profile were between 0.039±0.013-9.083±0.017 Bq^. g^-1dry weight in the same station. The vertical profile of the radionuclides suggests that they have little mobility during the 17 years after the Chernobyl accident.     

Ricci collineations of the Bianchi type II,VIII, and IX space-times

Ricci and contracted Ricci collineations of the Bianchi type II, VIII, and IX space-times, associated with the vector fields of the form (i) one component of ^a (x ^b ) is different from zero and (ii) two components of ^a (x ^b ) are different from zero, fora, b=1, 2, 3, 4, are presented. In subcase (i.b), which is ^a = (0, ¹(x ^a ),0,0), some known solutions are found, and in subcase (i.d), which is ^a =(0, 0, 0, ⁴(x ^a )), choosingS(t) = const.×R(t), the Bianchi type II, VIII, and IX spacetime is reduced to the Robertson-Walker metric.     

High-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of bile acids in hamster bile

A high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure has been developed for the determination of pentamidine concentrations in serum samples. A microbore, reversed-phase column was used with a mobile phase consisting of methanol and water with sodium heptanesulfonate and triethylamine as modifiers. Pentamidine could be extracted from serum only by the addition of an ion-pairing agent, di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid, to the chloroform used for extraction. The method can be used to reliably detect levels as low as 5 ng/ml. The pentamidine concentration in the serum of eleven patients 24 h after their tenth daily dose of pentamidine averaged 60 +/- 34 ng/ml.     

A novel synthetic approach for the synthesis of pyridocarbazole alkaloids

The synthesis of 11‐methyl‐6H‐pyrido[4,3‐b]carbazole‐1(2H)‐one (5), which can be important for the synthesis of other pyridocarbazole alkaloids and especially 1‐substituted ellipticines, is described. Construction of the tetracyclic structure was achieved by a new route and two important precursor compounds (4a and 4b) for the synthesis of pyridocarbazole alkaloids and also many new tetrahydrocar‐bazole derivatives (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) were synthesized.     

Concanavalin a immobilized affinity adsorbents for reversible use in yeast invertase adsorption

Concanavalin A (Con A) immobilized poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) beads were investigated for specific adsorption of yeast invertase from aqueous solutions. PHEMA beads were prepared by a suspension polymerization technique with an average size of 150-200 microm, and activated by epichlorohydrin. Con A was then immobilized by covalent binding onto these beads. The maximum Con A immobilization was found to be 10 mg/g. The invertase-loading capability of the PHEMA/Con A beads was 107 mg/g. The maximum invertase adsorption capacity on the PHEMA/Con A adsorbents was observed at pH 5.0. The values of the Michaelis constant K(m) of invertase were significantly larger upon adsorption, indicating decreased affinity by the enzyme for its substrate, whereas V(max) was smaller for the adsorbed invertase. Adsorption improved the pH stability of the enzyme as well as its temperature stability. Thermal stability was found to increase with adsorption. The adsorbed enzyme activity was found to be quite stable in repeated experiments. Storage stability of adsorbed invertase.     

A new tandem route to angular tetraquinanes. Synthesis of the Waihoensene ring system

[formula: see text] This paper describes a new tandem reaction sequence leading to angularly fused polyquinanes from squaric acid-derived bicyclo[6.3.0]-undecadienediones. Such compounds undergo a dual Michael addition. The enolate form in the first intermolecular addition undergoes the second intramolecular transannular addition to give the angular polyquinanes. A particularly interesting example is a catalytic transformation of cis-13-methylyricyclo[10.3.0.0]pentadeca-4(5),12(13)-diene-3 ,14-dione to (3R*,3aS*,5aR*,9aR*,11aR*)-3-methyl-1,2,3,5,5a,6 ,7,10,11,11a-decahydro-4H- pentaleno[6a,1-c]indene-2,10-dione, a compound having the tetracyclic ring system found in the natural product waihoensene. The mechanism and synthetic scope of these reactions are discussed.
