Background  

In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit superior performance to females (a difference attributed to the hormonal influence of estrogen). This study examined the influence of phytoestrogens (estrogen-like plant compounds) on VSM, utilizing radial arm-maze methods to examine varying aspects of memory. Additionally, brain phytoestrogen, calbindin (CALB), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels were determined.  相似文献

In this paper Jeffery–Hamel flow has been studied and its nonlinear ordinary differential equation has been solved through homotopy analysis method (HAM). The obtained solution in comparison with the numerical ones represents a remarkable accuracy. The complexity of organic composition and temporal variability of atmospheric aerosols presents an extreme analytical challenge. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC x GC) has been used on time integrated filter samples to reveal the presence of thousands of individual organic compounds in aerosols, but without defining the temporal variability in composition ideal for providing information on source resolution and human exposure to specific pollutants. We hereby introduce a new instrument, 2D-TAG, which combines our in-situ thermal desorption aerosol GC (TAG) instrument with GC x GC allowing for dramatically improved separation of organics with automated measurements at hourly timescales.  相似文献

A simple and cost-effective GC × GC modulator requiring no moving parts or consumables, hence suitable for field analysis and monitoring, was developed. The modulator was constructed from a specially designed Silcosteel® trapping capillary, installed outside the GC oven, and coated inside with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stationary phase. Dual-stage modulation was accomplished by resistively heating alternate segments of the trap with a custom-designed capacitive discharge power supply. The performance of the proposed modulator was comparable to many GC × GC systems currently in use, with the injection band widths as low as 60 ms at half height. With proper selection of the stationary phase in the trap, the modulator can be used for the analysis of complex mixtures with volatility range spanning from n-C5 to n-C40.  相似文献

This article summarizes and compares the analysis of the surfaces of natural aerosol particles from three different forest environments by vibrational sum frequency generation. The experiments were carried out directly on filter and impactor substrates, without the need for sample preconcentration, manipulation, or destruction. We discuss the important first steps leading to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particle nucleation and growth from terpene oxidation by showing that, as viewed by coherent vibrational spectroscopy, the chemical composition of the surface region of aerosol particles having sizes of 1 μm and lower appears to be close to size-invariant. We also discuss the concept of molecular chirality as a chemical marker that could be useful for quantifying how chemical constituents in the SOA gas phase and the SOA particle phase are related in time. Finally, we describe how the combination of multiple disciplines, such as aerosol science, advanced vibrational spectroscopy, meteorology, and chemistry can be highly informative when studying particles collected during atmospheric chemistry field campaigns, such as those carried out during HUMPPA-COPEC-2010, AMAZE-08, or BEARPEX-2009, and when they are compared to results from synthetic model systems such as particles from the Harvard Environmental Chamber (HEC). Discussions regarding the future of SOA chemical analysis approaches are given in the context of providing a path toward detailed spectroscopic assignments of SOA particle precursors and constituents and to fast-forward, in terms of mechanistic studies, through the SOA particle formation process.  相似文献

This paper considers the efficient construction of a nonparametric family of distributions indexed by a specified parameter of interest and its application to calculating a bootstrap likelihood for the parameter. An approximate expression is obtained for the variance of log bootstrap likelihood for statistics which are defined by an estimating equation resulting from the method of selecting the first-level bootstrap populations and parameters. The expression is shown to agree well with simulations for artificial data sets based on quantiles of the standard normal distribution, and these results give guidelines for the amount of aggregation of bootstrap samples with similar parameter values required to achieve a given reduction in variance. An application to earthquake data illustrates how the variance expression can be used to construct an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm for defining a smooth nonparametric family of empirical distributions to calculate a bootstrap likelihood by greatly reducing the inherent variability due to first-level resampling.  相似文献

The accurate measurement of the thermal conductivity of metals still poses considerable experimental difficulty. The reasons for this, and the main ways in which the problem has been approached, are summarized. A detailed examination of the development in technique and methods of measurement shows that while most of the steady-state methods introduced over 50 years ago are still being improved, the emphasis in the last few years has been on the development of methods which give more rapid results, particularly at high temperatures.  相似文献
