When some parameters cannot be easily measured experimentally, mathematical models can often be used to deconvolute or interpret data collected on complex systems, such as those characteristic of many environmental problems. These models can help quantify the contributions of various physical or chemical phenomena that contribute to the overall behavior, thereby enabling the scientist to control and manipulate these phenomena, and thus to optimize the performance of the material or device. In the first case study presented here, a model is used to test the hypothesis that oxygen interactions with hydrogen on the catalyst particles of solid oxide fuel cell anodes can sometimes occur a finite distance away from the triple phase boundary (TPB), so that such reactions are not restricted to the TPB as normally assumed. The model may help explain a discrepancy between the observed structure of SOFCs and their performance. The second case study develops a simple physical model that allows engineers to design and control the sizes and shapes of mesopores in silica thin films. Such pore design can be useful for enhancing the selectivity and reactivity of environmental sensors and catalysts. This paper demonstrates the mutually beneficial interactions between experiment and modeling in the solution of a wide range of problems.  相似文献

Biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to ethanol involves size reduction, preprocessing, pretreatment, enzyme hydrolysis, and fermentation. In recent years, microbial preprocessing has been gaining attention as a means to produce labile biomass for lessening the requirement of pretreatment severity. However, loss of sugars due to microbial consumption is a major consequence, suggesting its minimization through optimization of nutrients, temperature, and preprocessing time. In this work, we emphasized estimation of fungal preprocessing time, at which higher sugar yields can be achieved after preprocessing and enzyme hydrolysis. The estimation is based on the enzymatic activity profile obtained by treating switchgrass with Phanerochaete chrysosporium for 28 days. Enzyme assays were conducted once in every 7 days for 28 days, for activities of phenol oxidase, peroxidase, β-glucosidase, β-xylosidase, and cellobiohydrolase. We found no activity for phenol oxidase and peroxidase, but the greatest activities for cellulases on the seventh day. We then treated switchgrass for 7 days with P. chrysosporium and observed that the preprocessed switchgrass had higher glucan (39%), xylan (17.5%), and total sugar yields (25.5%) than the unpreprocessed switchgrass (34%, 37.5%, and 20.5%, respectively, p < 0.05). This verifies the utility of using enzyme assays for initial estimation of preprocessing time to enhance sugar yields.  相似文献

In this paper we extend the plane blow-up results of Grundy& McLaughlin (1997) to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations.Using a solution structure originally due to Lin we first providenumerical evidence for the existence of blow-up solutions on- < x, z < , 0 y 1 with boundary conditions on y = 0and y = 1 involving derivatives of the velocity components.The formulation enables us to consider plane and radial flowas special cases. Various features of the computations are isolatedand are used to construct a formal asymptotic solution closeto blow-up. We show that the numerical and asymptotic analysesprovide a mutually consistent global picture which supportsthe conclusion that, for the family of problems we considerhere, blow-up in fact can take place in three dimensions butat an inverse linear rate rather than the faster inverse squareof the plane case.  相似文献

Ice nucleating-active Pseudomonas fluorescens F264C was fed to Colorado potato beetles to determine bacterial retentioin in the beetle gut and its effect on the cold hardiness of this insect pest. The bacrterium was present in beetles recovered after overwintering in the field, seven months after their exposure to P. fluorescens. Retention was evident not only in the detection of the P. fluorescens ice nucleating gene, inaW, in bacterial cultures from beetle guts but also in the elevated supercooling points of some treated beetles.  相似文献

In this paper, we use coherent configurations to obtain new upper bounds on the independence number of orthogonal polarity graphs of projective planes of even order. The sd-interacting boson approximation (sd-IBA) and the df-interacting boson approximation (df-IBA) can be related to each other and the states of the interacting boson approximation model can be identified with the fully symmetric states in the sdf interacting boson approximation model. A systematic study of the sdf-IBA model showed that the constructed Hamiltonian can successfully describe the strong octupole correlations in the deformed nuclei. We showed that the interacting boson approximation may account for many of these K π ?=?0+ states. It was found that the calculated energy spectra of the gadolinium isotopes agree quite well with the experimental data. The observed B(E2) values were also calculated and compared with the experimental data.  相似文献

A method was developed using high-performance size exclusion liquid chromatography (HPSEC) with multi-angle laser light scattering (MALLS), quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS), interferometric refractometry (RI) and UV detection to characterize and monitor lignin. The combination proved very effective at tracking changes in molecular conformation of lignin molecules over time; i.e. changes in molecular weight distribution, radius of gyration, and hydrodynamic radius. Until this study, UV detection (280 nm) had been the primary lignin determination method for chromatography. Three different HPLC columns were used to study the effects of pH, flow conditions, and mobile phase compositions (dimethyl sulphoxide, water, 0.1M NaOH, and lithium bromide) on the chromatography of lignin. Since light scattering accuracy is highly dependent on solute concentration, both the UV and RI detectors were calibrated for use as concentration detectors. Shodex Asahipak GS-320 HQ column with 0.1M NaOH (pH 12.0) run at 0.5 ml/min was found to give the highest separation and most consistent recovery. The study also revealed that the lignin aggregated at pH below 8.5. This aggregation was detected only by MALLS and was not observed on UV or RI detectors. It is very important to take this loss in apparent concentration due to aggregation into consideration before collecting reliable depolymerization data.  相似文献

5-Geranoxypsoralen, commonly called bergamottin, a major furocoumarin contained in bergamot oil, is reported in vitro as a highly photoreactive psoralen. In ethanol, it exhibits quite a high triplet state quantum yield (approximately 0.37). The triplet state is involved in subsequent photochemistry which depends on the initial concentration and on the presence of oxygen. In contrast to most psoralens, absorption and fluorescence data suggest that 5-geranoxypsoralen does not interact with DNA in the dark. No UVA-induced interstrand cross-links in DNA were shown.  相似文献

Termites, beetles, and other arthropods can digest living and decaying wood plus other lignocellulosic plant litter. Microbial sources like other wood-eating insect guts and wastewater treatment sludge were screened for lignin depolymerization. Near infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) along with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), were used to track changes in functional groups, size, shape, and molecular weight of lignin molecules during incubations. Odontotaenius disjunctus (Betsy beetle) guts dissected whole or separately as midgut, foregut, and hindgut, consumed corn stover but did not show lignin depolymerization. The sludge-treated lignin did show some reduction in molecular weight on the HPLC, particle size (350-650 nm initially to 135-220 nm by day 30) and particles per field on AFM. pH and the presence of nutrients had a substantial effect on the extent of depolymerization. Cultures in lignin and nutrients showed higher growth than cultures with lignin only. Colony characteristics within the beetle gut and the sludge were also evaluated.  相似文献
