Comparison of methods for processing acoustic intensity from orthogonal multimicrophone probes

One design for three-dimensional multimicrophone probes is the four-microphone orthogonal design consisting of one microphone at an origin position with the other three microphones equally spaced along the three coordinate axes. Several distinct processing methods have been suggested for the estimation of active acoustic intensity with the orthogonal probe; however, the relative merits of each method have not been thoroughly studied. This comparative study is an investigation of the errors associated with each method. Considered are orthogonal probes consisting of matched point sensor microphones both freely suspended and embedded on the surface of a rigid sphere. Results are given for propagating plane-wave fields for all angles of incidence. It is shown that the lowest error for intensity magnitude results from having the microphones in a sphere and using just one microphone for the pressure estimate. For intensity direction, the lowest error results from having the microphones in a sphere and using Taylor approximations to estimate the particle velocity and pressure.     

The Alexandroff Dimension of Digital Quotients of Euclidean Spaces

Alexandroff T ₀ -spaces have been studied as topological models of the supports of digital images and as discrete models of continuous spaces in theoretical physics. Recently, research has been focused on the dimension of such spaces. Here we study the small inductive dimension of the digital space X(W) constructed in [15] as a minimal open quotient of a fenestration W of R ⁿ . There are fenestrations of R ⁿ giving rise to digital spaces of Alexandroff dimension different from n , but we prove that if W is a fenestration, each of whose elements is a bounded convex subset of R ⁿ , then the Alexandroff dimension of the digital space X(W) is equal to n . Catechol Thioesters: Ligands for Hierarchically Formed Lithium-Bridged Titanium(IV) Helicates and Helicate-Based Switches

The thioester moiety is introduced as a lithium binding unit for the hierarchical formation of titanium(IV) catecholate-based lithium-bridged helicates. In solution, the coordination compounds show a monomer–dimer equilibrium which —in comparison to the oxo esters— is significantly shifted towards the monomers. In addition, the influence of the thioester side chain on the dimerization behavior is investigated and an expansible/compressible molecular switch is synthesized. In the latter case expansion and compression are performed reversibly in methanol, whereas in DMSO spontaneous expansion occurs.
