Carbon Dioxide as a Protecting Group: Highly Efficient and Selective Catalytic Access to Cyclic cis‐Diol Scaffolds

The efficient and highly selective formation of a wide range of (hetero)cyclic cis‐diol scaffolds using aminotriphenolate‐based metal catalysts is reported. The key intermediates are cyclic carbonates, which are obtained in high yield and with high levels of diastereo‐ and chemoselectivity from the parent oxirane precursors and carbon dioxide. Deprotection of the carbonate structures affords synthetically useful cis‐diol scaffolds with different ring sizes that incorporate various functional groups. This atom‐efficient method allows the simple construction of diol synthons using inexpensive and accessible precursors and green metal catalysts and showcases the use of CO₂ as a temporary protecting group.     

Recent advances with π-conjugated salen systems

Schiff base ligands have long been successfully employed as ligands in combination with various metals to give catalysts capable of realizing a variety of synthetic transformations. One of the most widely used Schiff base ligands, the "salen" ligand, has been extensively researched. Recently, there has been increased interest in π-conjugated salen systems, known as "salphen" ligands, as a result of the differences in reactivity of the complexes in catalytic applications compared with the salen analogues. Complexes of salphen ligands display interesting photophysical and supramolecular properties which are not always observed with salen systems as a result of their π-conjugation. This tutorial review therefore describes the most significant advances recently made with salphen and related π-conjugated ligand systems.     

The first three anisotropy constants of nickel

The technique of ferromagnetic resonance at 23 GHz has been used to determine the first three anisotropy constants of pure Ni down to 4.2K. A temperature and orientation dependent linewidth has also been observed.     

The hydrolysis of clofentezine and related tetrazines as the basis of determination of residues in bovine tissues

Summary A method has been developed for the determination of total clofentezine-derived residues in bovine tissues. It comprises hydrolysis with conc. hydrobromic acid to effect liberation of the free metabolite residue and determination by gas chromatography with mass selective detection in the selected ion mode. The limit of determination is 0.05 mg/kg equivalent clofentezine.
