Reactivity of (bicyclo[5.1.0]octadienyl)iron(1+) cations: application to the synthesis of cis-2-(2'-carboxycyclopropyl)glycines

The addition of carbon and heteroatom nucleophiles to (bicyclo[5.1.0]octadienyl)Fe(CO)(2)L(+) cations 5 or 8 (L = CO, PPh(3)) generally proceeds via attack at the dienyl terminus on the face of the ligand opposite to iron to generate 6-substituted (bicyclo[5.1.0]octa-2,4-diene)iron complexes (11 or 13). In certain cases, these products are unstable with respect to elimination of a proton and the nucleophilic substituent to afford (cyclooctatetraene)Fe(CO)(2)L (4 or 7). Decomplexation of 13f, arising from addition of phthalimide to 8, gave N-(bicyclo[5.1.0]octa-3,5-dien-2-yl)phthalimide (19). Oxidative cleavage of 19 (RuCl(3)/NaIO(4)) followed by esterification gave the cyclopropane diester 22, which upon hydrolysis gave cis-2-(2'-carboxycyclopropyl)glycine (CCG-III, 18) (eight steps from 4, 43% overall yield). This methodology was also utilized for preparation of stereospecifically deuterated CCG-III (d-18) and optically enriched (-)-18. Deprotonation of 22 resulted in cyclopropane ring opening to afford the benzoindolizidine (23).     

Scale size of magnetic turbulence in tokamaks probed with 30-MeV electrons

Measurements of synchrotron radiation emitted by 30-MeV runaway electrons in the TEXTOR-94 tokamak show that the runaway population decays after switching on neutral beam injection (NBI). The decay starts only with a significant delay, which decreases with increasing NBI heating power. This delay provides direct evidence of the energy dependence of runaway confinement, which is expected if magnetic modes govern the loss of runaways. Application of the theory by Mynick and Strachan [Phys. Fluids 24, 695 (1981)] yields estimates for the "mode width" (delta) of magnetic perturbations: delta<0.5 cm in Ohmic discharges, increasing to delta = 4.4 cm for 0. 6 MW NBI.     

Crystal and molecular structure of N-(bicyclo[5.1.0]octa-3,5-dien-2-yl)phthalimide, C16H13NO2

Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the title compound revealed that the phthalimide substituent was endo with respect to the bicyclic ring system.     

Synthesis of cyclopropanes via organoiron methodology: preparation and rearrangement of divinylcyclopropanes

Addition of alkenyl Grignard reagents to (1-methoxycarbonylpentadienyl)iron(1+) cation generates the corresponding (2-alkenylpent-3-en-1,5-diyl)iron complexes. Oxidatively induced-reductive elimination of these complexes gives divinylcyclopropanes which can undergo subsequent Cope rearrangement to give 1,4-cycloheptadienes.     

Generation of molecular complexity from cyclooctatetraene using dienyliron and olefin metathesis methodology

Transformation of the simple hydrocarbon cyclooctatetraene into a variety of polycyclic skeletons was achieved by sequential coordination to iron, reaction with electrophiles followed by allylated nucleophiles, decomplexation and olefin metathesis.     

Rapid catalytic oxidation of CO to CO(2) - On the development of a new approach to on-line oxygen isotope analysis of organic matter

A new approach to on-line oxygen isotope analysis has been developed which utilises existing elemental analyser and mass spectrometry technology to produce a sample of carbon dioxide gas for oxygen isotople analysis. The method relies on on-line high temperature pyrolysis of the sample over a carbon source followed by a rapid, non-contributive partial catalytic oxidation over nickel powder at between 550 and 600 degrees C. Initial results demonstrate both good precision (better than 0.2 per thousand) and accuracy for both cellulose and silver nitrate samples. Copyright 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
