Two new orthohydroxy Schiff bases, 7-phenylsalicylidene benzylamine (PSBA) and 7-ethylsalicylideneaniline (ESA) have been synthesized. The excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and the structure of PSBA and ESA in its crystalline form and in the solvents n-hexane, n-heptane and 1,4-dioxane have been investigated by means of absorption, emission and nanosecond spectroscopy at room temperature and 77K. One ground state species has been detected both in neutral and basic solutions of both PSBA and ESA: the cis-enol form with an intramolecular hydrogen bond. The ESIPT and formation of keto tautomer are evidenced by a large Stokes shifted emission (approximately 12000 cm(-1)) at room temperature only in the case of ESA. On the other hand the keto tautomer is the predominant species at 77K in a solid matrix and as a solid sample at room temperature both in the case of ESA and PSBA. In the case of both ESA and PSBA the more intense, higher energy emission is due to the species which has not undergone ESIPT and attributed mainly due to cis-enol form. The trans-enol form is also observed by changing the excitation wavelength. Both the compounds are found to undergo a structural change to a zwitterionic and intermolecular hydrogen bonded form in the presence of a strong base like triethylamine. From the nanosecond measurements and quantum yield of fluorescence we have estimated the decay rates of proton transfer reaction in the case of PSBA. Our theoretical calculation at the AM1 level of approximation shows that the ground singlet state has a rather large activation barrier both in the case of PSBA and ESA. The barrier height is much lower on the corresponding excited singlet surface only in the case of ESA. The process is predicted to be endothermic in the ground state and exotherrmic in the excited singlet state.  相似文献

The enthalpies of transfer of 2-methyl-2-propanol (TBA) from water to mixtures of water with methanol, ethanol and 1,4-dioxane have been measured. The data are considered in terms of recently developed theory, and it is found that the enthalpies of transfer can be reproduced quantitatively over most of the composition range in each solvent system. The parameters recovered from the analyses indicate that the net effect of TBA on the solvent structure is a breaking of solvent-solvent bonds and that TBA is preferentially hydrated in the aqueous alcohol systems, but randomly solvated in the water+1,4-dioxane system. It is also found that the model parameters for TBA solvation in the alcohol systems are independent of the alcohol.  相似文献

A theorem presented by Professor Ben-Naim (J Phys Chem 82:874–885, 1978) states that the standard state enthalpy and entropy changes arising from changes in the solvent structure that are induced by solvation of a solute cancel exactly in the standard state Gibbs energy. In this paper this is explored by consideration of the thermodynamics of transfer of electrolytes in mixed solvents, using previously developed models of the solvation process. Two cases are considered. One is random solvation, where curvatures in plots of the transfer enthalpies and entropies, which arise from changes in solvent–solvent interactions, exactly compensate in the transfer Gibbs (free) energies, which are sensibly linear with solvent composition. The second type of system are those with strong preferential solvation where it is found that the transfer Gibbs energies can be accounted for quantitatively in terms of changes in the solute–solvent interactions, with no contribution from changes in solvent–solvent interactions. The results are entirely consistent with the Ben-Naim theorem.  相似文献

The infrared spectra of tetramethylurea have been measured in mixtures of dimethylsulfoxide or acetonitrile with D2O or deuterated methanol (CH3OD). Marked solvatochroism is observed for bands associated with the C=O and C–N stretches of tetramethylurea, with the former moving to lower wavenumber, and the latter to higher, as the concentration of the protic component is increased. The C=O band shows four distinct absorbances, which are attributed to non-, mono, di-, and trihydrogen bonded tetramethylurea. The relative populations of the different hydrogen bonded species were determined from analyses of the C=O band shapes. It is found that the variations in the populations of the different hydrogen bonded species can be accounted for by a simple mass action treatment.  相似文献

We report enthalpies of solution of formamide, N,N-dimethylformamide,N,N-dimethylacetamide, acetic acid, methyl acetate, and acetonitrile in water +dimethylsulfoxide mixed solvents. These, along with literature data for additional solutes,are analyzed in terms of the extended coordination model of solvation. We alsoanalyze infrared data for several of these solutes. These analyses show thatN,N-dimethylformamide and N,N-dimethylacetamide are preferentially hydrated,while the other solutes appear to be preferentially solvated by dimethylsulfoxide.In all cases, the extent of preferential solvation is relatively small. It is also foundthat the degrees of preferential solvation recovered from analyses of the enthalpydata correspond closely to those recovered from the infrared data, although thelatter refer only to the polar chromophores on the solute molecules. It is foundthat the extent to which the solutes disrupt the solvent-solvent interactions variessystematically with the area of the nonpolar surfaces of the solute molecules.  相似文献
