Synthesis and Odor of Chiral Partial Structures of Khusimone. Part 1

Khusimone (1), one of the main odor-donating compounds of vetiver oil is subject of the following study on structure/odor relationship. The omittance of the ethano bridge of the tricyclic khusimone leads to a bicyclic system. The stereoselective approach to this degraded structure is described, and the olfactory properties are studied. The key step of the synthesis of the hydrindane nucleus is based on a highly diastereoselective conjugate addition to a chiral oxo-cyclopentene-2-carboxylate.

Summary The bicyclo[2.2.1]- and [2.2.2]-systems are part of numerous biological active substances. Continuing our syntheses in the isocamphane series the homologous isocamphanes of mecamylamine (1 a) and of the fungicidal bicyclic compound2 were synthesized. Furthermore the syntheses ofE-homoisosantalene (15) andE,E-homoisosantalol (16) are described.

     

Characterization of Carbohydrates in Paper and Paper Pulps Using Anion Exchange Chromatography and Principal Component Analysis

In the course of this investigation, a method for the characterization and differentiation of paper pulps was developed. After hydrolyzation of the papers and the respective raw pulps with trifluoroacetic acid, the hydrolyzates were analyzed with respect to their carbohydrate composition using ion exchange chromatography. The variations in carbohydrate composition mainly arise from the various hemicelluloses of the papers and pulps. The chromatographic results were then further processed using principal component analysis which allows correlating the various papers to different pulp materials.     

Collisional population of the 23 ∏ g state inK 2

We have measured the effect of potassium vapour pressure within the heat-pipe oven on the shape of the 2³ ∏ _g ?1³∑ _u ⁺ fluorescence induced by collision energy transfer from theC ¹∏ _u state which was optically excited by the 457.9 nm argon-ion laser line. The estimated cross section of that process is 300 Ų. The simulation of the diffuse band shape indicates a non-thermalised vibrational distribution in the 2³ ∏ _g state.     

Classification of the CD. Spectra of carotenoids

The CD. spectra of carotenoids in the 220-500 nm region may by inspection be classified as (a) essentially Conservative, (b) intermediate, or (c) essentially nonconservative. A conservative spectrum shows in that spectral region a sequence of 5-6 relatively sharp Cotton effects of alternating sign, the rotatory strengths of which roughly add to zero. In a non-conservative spectrum Δ? has the same sign over the whole region and its absolute value is in general somewhat smaller. In general, typical conservative spectra invert upon isomerization of the molecule from all-trans to mono-cis. Non-conservative spectra do not invert. The model of a chiral polyene of the length of the conjugated carotene chromophore reproduces well the main features of the conservative spectra. The theoretical predictions and the experimental data are shown to conform to the C₂-rule [43] [44]. The particular nature of the longest-wavelength transition is interpreted. Based on a summary of the chiroptic data on about 50 naturally occurring compounds, the question is discussed of when conservative spectra arise and when not.     

An enzyme-immunoassay for the detection of the mycotoxin zearalenone by use of yolk antibodies

The development of an enzyme-immunoassay (ELISA) for the detection of the Fusarium mycotoxin zearalenone (ZON) is described. In contrast to the common antibody isolation from mammal serum, chicken were immunized in order to isolate specific antibodies from the egg yolk. Five weeks after the start of the immunization a titer of 1:76 000 resulted from three injections without any adverse effects for the animals. Utilizing the indirect competitive assay format ZON could be detected in a concentration range between 10 and 200 μg/L. Cross section for the photochemical formation of the NaZn (22Π) excimer

We studied the conditions for the photochemical formation of the NaZn excimer in the excited 2²Π state using Na₂(2¹Π _u )+Zn→NaZn(2²Π)+Na reaction. The Na-Zn vapor mixture was prepared in the heat-pipe oven with the well defined column density and temperature. The Na and Zn atom densities in the vapor mixture were controlled by the preparation of the alloy with different mole fraction ratios of the relevant components in the solid phase. The Na densities were determined from the total absorption coefficient at Na₂ X-B and X-A bands. The cross section for photochemical formation of the NaZn in the 2²Π state is estimated to be 17·10^?16 cm² for the laser excitation at 308 nm, measured relative to the cross section of 470·10^?16 cm² for collisional energy transfer Na₂(2¹Π _u )+Na→Na₂(2³Π _g )+Na published by Mehdizadeh et al. [2].     

Strong Attraction of Caffeine to the Mercurous Dumbbell in the Salt [Hg2(Caf)2](ClO4)2(H2O)2

Colourless single crystals of the caffeine adduct of mercurous perchlorate dihydrate, [Hg₂(Caf)₂](ClO₄)₂(H₂O)₂, were grown from aqueous solutions of mercurous perchlorate and caffeine by isothermal evaporation at ambient temperature. The crystal structure (monoclinic, P2₁/n, Z = 4, a = 1628.0(2), b = 780.4(1), c = 2229.6(3) pm, β = 99.84(1)°, R₁(all data) = 0.0894) contains [trans‐Caf‐Hg‐Hg‐Caf]²⁺ cations with a Hg‐Hg distance of 250.88(6) pm, Hg‐N (bond) distances of 214.4(6) and 215.1(6) pm and Hg‐Hg‐N angles of 176.9(2) and 165.1(2)°, respectively. These cations are attached via weak Hg‐O contacts to dimers which are further arranged to leave large channels into which one crystal water molecule is included. The second water molecule and the two perchlorate anions are weakly attracted to one Hg atom.
