Characterization of pneumatic fast transfer system irradiation position of KAMINI reactor for k 0-based NAA

The pneumatic fast transfer system position at KAMINI reactor, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, India was characterized by determining the epithermal neutron flux shape factor (α) and the sub-cadmium to epithermal neutron flux ratio (f) for k ₀-based Neutron Activation Analysis (k ₀-NAA). For determination of α value, bare, Cd-ratio and Cd-cover methods were employed using dual and multi monitors namely Au, Zr and Zn. For calculation of f, Au and Zr monitors were used in the case of bare method and Au monitor was used for cadmium ratio and cadmium cover methods. The determined α-value of PFTS indicated a hard epithermal neutron spectrum and the f value indicated about 96 % thermal neutron component. For validation of k ₀-NAA method, reference materials namely NIST SRM 1646a (Estuarine Sediment) and BCS Nb-stabilized Stainless Steel (BCS/SS No.261/1) were analyzed. The percentage errors of the determined concentration values of elements were within ±5 % with respect to the certified values and the Z-score values at 95 % confidence level were within ±2 in most of the cases.     

Quantitative separation of carrier-free cerium from fission products

The extraction of Ce (IV) by di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phosphoric acid (HDEHP) has been studied as a function of nitric acid concentration. Using the distribution coefficient data, the optimum conditions for recovery of Ce (IV) from nitric acid medium were arrived at. Under the conditions employed for Ce(IV), a small percentage of Ru was also found to be extracted. Cerium could be selectively stripped from the organic phase with 8M HNO₃/30% H₂O₂ solution. This procedure led to the recovery of¹⁴⁴Ce free of¹⁰⁶Ru. Based on the solvent extraction data, an extraction-chromatographic procedure employing HDEHP (40% w/w) loaded on Amberlite XAD-7 as the stationary phase was developed for the isolation of pure, carrier-free¹⁴⁴Ce from the spent fuel solution.     

Study of structural and electronic transport properties of Ce-doped LaMnO3

The structural and electronic transport properties of La_1−x Ce _x MnO₃ (x=0.0–1.0) have been studied. All the samples exhibit orthorhombic crystal symmetry and the unit cell volume decreases with Ce doping. They also make a metal-insulator transition (MIT) and transition temperature increases with increase in Ce concentration up to 50% doping. The system La_0.5Ce_0.5MnO₃ also exhibits MIT instead of charge-ordered state as observed in the hole doped systems of the same composition.     

Enhanced Production of Laccase from Coriolus versicolor NCIM 996 by Nutrient Optimization Using Response Surface Methodology

Plackett and Burman design criterion and central composite design were applied successfully for enhanced production of laccase by Coriolus versicolor NCIM 996 for the first time. Plackett and Burman design criterion was applied to screen the significance of ten nutrients on laccase production by C. versicolor NCIM 996. Out of the ten nutrients tested, starch, yeast extract, MnSO(4), MgSO(4) x 7H(2)O, and phenol were found to have significant effect on laccase production. A central composite design was applied to determine the optimum concentrations of the significant variables obtained from Plackett-Burman design. The optimized medium composition for production of laccase was (g/l): starch, 30.0; yeast extract, 4.53; MnSO(4), 0.002; MgSO(4) x 7H(2)O, 0.755; and phenol, 0.026, and the optimum laccase production was 6,590.26 (U/l), which was 7.6 times greater than the control.

We establish a transformation which connects the potentials of the one-dimensional Dirac and Klein-Gordon operators. This transformation links the solutions of the nonlinear evolution equations solvable by means of the two inverse spectral transforms which use the Dirac and Klein-Gordon direct and inverse spectral problems.
