Thermal decomposition kinetics of thorium(IV) chelates of two naphthol dyes

The thermal decomposition of thorium(IV) chelates of 1-(2-fluorenylazo)-2-naphthol ando-carboxyphenylazo-2-naphthol was studied by TG. Thermoanalytical data (TG and DTG) of these chelates are presented in this communication. Interpretation and mathematical analysis of these data and evaluation of order of reaction, the energy and entropy of activation based on the differential method employing the Freeman-Carroll equation, the integral method using Coats-Redfern equation and the approximation method using the Horowitz-Metzger equation are also given. On the basis of experimental findings in the present course of studies the relative thermal stabilities of the thorium chelates can be given as [Th(FAN)₂(NO₃)₂]>[Th(CPAN)₂(H₂O)₂]2H₂O.

Zusammenfassung Die thermische Zersetzung von Thorium(IV)-Chelaten von 1-(2-Fluorenylazo)-2-naphthol undo-Carboxyphenylazo-2-naphthol wurde thermogravimetrisch untersucht. Thermoanalytische Daten (TG und DTG) dieser Chelate werden angegeben und interpretiert. Reaktionsordnung sowie Aktivierungsenergie und -entropie wurden nach der differentiellen Methode unter Anwendung der Freeman-Carroll-Gleichung, nach der integralen Methode unter Verwendung der Coats-Redfern-Gleichung und nach der Näherungsmethode von Horowitz-Metzger bestimmt. Für die relative thermische Stabilität wird die Reihenfolge [Th(FAN)₂(NO₃)₂]>[Th(CPAN)₂(H₂O)₂]2H₂O angegeben.

Gas chromatographic determination of residual hydrazine and morpholine in boiler feed water and steam condensates

Summary Hydrazine, an oxygen scavenger in boiler water, was derivatised to the corresponding acetone azine and determined at the ng ml^–1 level by gas chromatography. Morpholine, a corrosion inhibitor used in steam boilers, was estimated either directly (if >2.0 g ml^–1) or by quantitative preconcentration (0.1 ng – 2.0 g ml^–1). To obtain symmetrical peaks for these amines, the column packing was coated with KOH. Use of a nitrogen-specific detector improved accuracy of estimation of hydrazine and morpholine, giving a RSD of 1.9–3.6%. Chromatographic analysis of these amines in boiler feed water and steam condensate samples collected from boilers servicing a petroleum refinery is described. Environmental safety regulations calls for monitoring of hydrazine and the methods developed can easily be adapted for this purpose.     

Basic theory of fractional differential equations

In this paper, the basic theory for the initial value problem of fractional differential equations involving Riemann–Liouville differential operators is discussed employing the classical approach. The theory of inequalities, local existence, extremal solutions, comparison result and global existence of solutions are considered.     

Physico-chemical properties of new cellulosic fibers from the bark of Acacia planifrons

Identification of new natural fibers is growing due to their superior properties and the impetus for researchers to develop high-performance composites. This investigation was aimed at understanding the physico-chemical properties of Acacia planifrons fibers (APFs). The crystalline structure of APFs was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, and the crystallinity index (65.38%) was calculated. The chemical functional group of APFs was confirmed by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, the thermal stability measured by thermogravimetric analysis, and surface characterization established by atomic force microscopy. Taken together, all the properties of APFs can play a vital role in establishing APFs as new reinforcement in polymer composites.
