Effects of oblique-incidence evaporation on magnetic properties of Fe20Ni80/Fe70Co30 bilayer film

Evaporative deposition at oblique incidence is shown to enhance the magnetic anisotropy of an Fe₂₀Ni₈₀ magnetic film and induce magnetic anisotropy in an overlying, strongly isotropic Fe₇₀Co₃₀ film. This deposition method for the formation of an underlayer of several lattice parameters in thickness and semi-hard overlayer of a few thousands Angstroms in thickness achieves a significant change in the magnetization process and strong suppression of the coercive forces of Fe₇₀Co₃₀ in the hard magnetization direction. Soft magnetization of the Fe₇₀Co₃₀ overlayer is not achieved when one of the layers is deposited at oblique incidence. It is anticipated that shape magnetic anisotropy is responsible in part for the magnetic anisotropy induced in both in Fe₂₀Ni₈₀ under- and Fe₇₀Co₃₀ overlayer by oblique incidence evaporation.     

Conformation of drawn poly(trimethylene terephthalate) studied by solid-state 13C NMR

The change in the conformation of the flexible O-CH2-CH2-CH2-O segment of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) monofilament caused by drawing was investigated by means of the gamma-gauche effect on the 13C solid-state NMR chemical shift of the internal methylene carbon, combined with the NMR relaxations. The conformation around the O-CH2 and CH2-O bonds for as-spun fiber was trans/trans. On drawing, followed by heat treatment, the conformation changed to gauche/gauche. The ratio of gauche/gauche to trans/trans for the drawn PTT fiber was determined quantitatively.     

Effect of HF addition on the microwave-assisted acid-digestion for the determination of metals in coal by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry

The microwave-assisted acid-digestion for the determination of metals in coal by ICP-AES was investigated, especially focusing on the necessity of adding HF. By testing five certified reference materials, BCR-180, BCR-040, NIST-1632b, NIST-1632c, and SARM-20, it was found that the two-stage digestion without HF (HNO₃ + H₂O₂ was used) was very effective for the pretreatment of ICP-AES measurement. Both major metals (Al, Ca, Fe, and Mg) and minor or trace metals (Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in coal gave good recoveries for their certified or reference values. The possibility of ‘HF-memory effect’ was cancelled by the use of a set of vessels which had been never contacted with HF. Twenty-four Japanese standard coals (SS coals) were analyzed by the present method, and the concentrations of major metals measured by the present method provided very high accordance with those from the authentic JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) method.     

Influence of amino acid side chain packing on Fe-methionine coordination in thermostable cytochrome C

Paramagnetic NMR and optical studies of the oxidized forms of mesophile Pseudomonas aeruginosa cytochrome c(551) and its quintuple mutant (F7A/V13M/F34Y/E43Y/V78I), and thermophile Hydrogenobacter thermophilus cytochrome c(552) demonstrated that the amino acid side chain packings in the protein interior influence the coordination bond between the heme iron and the axial methionine in the proteins. The strength of heme axial coordinations was found to correlate with the overall protein thermostability.     

A novel sesterterpenoid, nitiol, as a potent enhancer of IL-2 gene expression in a human T cell line, from the Peruvian folk medicine "Hercumpuri" (Gentianella nitida).

A novel sesterterpenoid designated as nitiol (1), possessing enhancement activity of IL-2 gene expression in a human T cell line, was isolated from the Peruvian folk medicine "Hercampuri" (Gentianella nitida). The structure was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic investigation.     

Rescattering mechanisms for\bar pd \to pX reactions

Inclusive proton spectra for the reactions¯pd→3πp, ¯pd→5πp, and¯p d →K¯Kmπp are calculated. In addition to nucleon exchange, the rescattering of pions and kaons, and the production and absorption of heavy mesons is evaluated. In the proton spectator momentum regime of 200 to 600 MeV/c, the role of heavy mesons is found to be negligible. The proper counting of the topological variants of pion and kaon rescattering can explain the cross sections with the exception of the¯pd→3πp channel.     

Synthesis and properties of noncyclic polyether compounds. Part V : The influence of acid and concentration of cations on the uphill transport rates of cations and selectivities through liquid membranes by synthetic,noncyclic polyether ionophores

The effects of acid and cation concentration on the uphill transport rates of cations and selectivities through chloroform liquid membrane by noncyclic polyether ionophores, which are pentaethylene glycol derivatives containing both 8-quinolyt and o-carboxylphenyl terminal groups, have been demonstrated. Using sulfuric, oxalic, or polyphosphoric acid in aqueous solution, the initial transport rates and the amount of cation transported by the ionophores after two days were larger than those using hydrochloric or nitric acid. Using picric acid, the amount of cation transported decreased greatly. It was confirmed that it decreased where an acid could easily be counter-transported by the ionophore through liquid membranes. On the other hand, it was found that the rates, amounts of cation transported, and selectivities, change with the changing of the cation concentration in the aqueous solutions. When the cation concentration in both aqueous solutions is high enough compared with the pH gradient between the two aqueous solutions, the rate, amount, and selectivity of the ionophore for potassium ion increases compared with when the cation concentration is low.     

Determination of distance of intra-molecular hydrogen bonding in (Ala-Gly)15 with silk I form after removal of the effect of MAS frequency in REDOR experiment

It is important to know the structure of silk I (Bombyx mori silk structure before spinning in the solid state) in order to understand the mechanism of fiber formation at the atomic level. In this study, 15N-dephased, 13C-observe REDOR has been carried out to determine the atomic distance of intra-molecular hydrogen bond between the 13C=O carbon of the 14th Gly residue and the 15N nitrogen of the 17th Ala residue of (AG)(6)A[1-13C]GAG[15N]AG(AG)(6) with silk I form after removal of the effect of MAS frequency on the re-coupling. The distance was determined to be 4.3A, which confirmed the intra-molecular hydrogen bonding formation between these two atomic sites.     

Isolation of chemical constituents from Enicosanthum cupulare (King) Airy-Shaw

Six chemical constituents were isolated from Enicosanthum cupulare (King) Airy-Shaw. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined using 1D, 2D-NMR and were found to be identical to those previously reported for these compounds. Three aporphine alkaloids, O-methylmoschatoline, liriodenine and oxostephanine were isolated from this plant for the first time. In addition, we examined the effects of these compounds on melanogenesis in murine B16 melanoma cells; O-methylmoschatoline increased melanin content in these cells.
