The free volume and related mobility properties of substituted poly(p-phenylene) polymers are examined. The techniques used range from positron annihilation, dielectric relaxation, and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy to thermally stimulated currents. Fractional free volume is determined for the samples with different substituted side groups and related to the glass transition temperature. Bulkier groups lead to a greater fractional free volume and lower glass transition temperatures. Comparison of molecular relaxation times using the different characterization techniques demonstrates that there is strong coupling between motion of the main chain and the side groups, on which the dipoles reside. Intermolecular coupling between the main chains at the primary relaxation is shown in this work to be related to the nature of the side chains and resultant free volume, as are the temperature locations of local, secondary relaxations. A qualitative model describing the effect of regiochemistry on the motions and packing of these materials is also proposed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. As part of a comprehensive investigation of electronic effects on the stereochemistry of base-catalyzed 1,2-elimination reactions, we observed a new syn intramolecular pathway in the elimination of acetic acid from beta-acetoxy esters and thioesters. 1H and 2H NMR investigation of reactions using stereospecifically labeled tert-butyl (2R*,3R*)-3-acetoxy-2,3-2H2-butanoate (1) and its (2R*,3S*) diastereomer (2) shows that 23 +/- 2% syn elimination occurs. The elimination reactions were catalyzed with KOH or (CH3)4NOH in ethanol/water under rigorously non-ion-pairing conditions. By contrast, the more sterically hindered beta-trimethylacetoxy ester produces only 6 +/- 1% syn elimination. These data strongly support an intramolecular (Ei) syn path for elimination of acetic acid, most likely through the oxyanion produced by nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl carbon of the beta-acetoxy group. The analogous thioesters, S-tert-butyl (2R*,3R*)-3-acetoxy-2,3-2H2-butanethioate (3) and its (2R*,3S*) diastereomer (4), showed 18 +/- 2% syn elimination, whereas the beta-trimethylacetoxy substrate gave 5 +/- 1% syn elimination. The more acidic thioester substrates do not produce an increased amount of syn stereoselectivity even though their elimination reactions are at the E1cb interface.  相似文献

An isotropic three-dimensional nonlinear viscoelastic model is developed to simulate the time-dependent behavior of passive skeletal muscle. The development of the model is stimulated by experimental data that characterize the response during simple uniaxial stress cyclic loading and unloading. Of particular interest is the rate-dependent response, the recovery of muscle properties from the preconditioned to the unconditioned state and stress relaxation at constant stretch during loading and unloading. The model considers the material to be a composite of a nonlinear hyperelastic component in parallel with a nonlinear dissipative component. The strain energy and the corresponding stress measures are separated additively into hyperelastic and dissipative parts. In contrast to standard nonlinear inelastic models, here the dissipative component is modeled using an evolution equation that combines rate-independent and rate-dependent responses smoothly with no finite elastic range. Large deformation evolution equations for the distortional deformations in the elastic and in the dissipative component are presented. A robust, strongly objective numerical integration algorithm is used to model rate-dependent and rate-independent inelastic responses. The constitutive formulation is specialized to simulate the experimental data. The nonlinear viscoelastic model accurately represents the time-dependent passive response of skeletal muscle.  相似文献

In this paper, we examine the transition of striated muscles between active and passive states. New experimental data of a muscle performing such a transition are provided, allowing for a new model to be developed to capture this mechanical behavior. Specifically, a strain energy function is formulated using the theory of transient networks, introducing an intermediate, stress-free configuration for the active muscle fibers. Additionally, energy dissipation occurring during the unloading is accounted for by specifying a pseudo-energy function. The general three-dimensional case is specialized to uniaxial deformation for comparison with test data, from which material parameters are determined. Finally, numerical results are presented, demonstrating the model's ability to capture the mechanical behavior with changing stimulus.  相似文献

The linear viscoelastic behavior of a poly(paraphenylene) with a benzoyl substituent has been examined using tensile, dynamic mechanical, and creep experiments. This amorphous polymer was shown to have a tensile modulus of 1–1.5 Msi, nearly twice that of most common engineering thermoplastics. The relaxation behavior, which is similar to that of common thermoplastics, can be described by the WLF equation. Outstanding creep resistance was observed at low temperatures, with rubbery-like behavior being exhibited as the temperature approached Tg. Physical aging was shown to interact with long-term creep, rendering time–temperature superposition invalid for predicting the long-term properties. X-ray diffraction photographs of polycrystalline xenon in a diamond- anvil cell show that the crystal structure of Xe remains fcc up to at least 23 GPa at 298 K. The atomic volumes are in good agreement with earlier x-ray data at lower pressures and with calculated volumes along the O-K isotherm.  相似文献
