The break of L-S coupling and the double Stark resonance in the spectrum of 36P → 37P two-photon transition in Rydberg atoms of sodium

New results are presented of an experimental investigation of the spectrum of 36P → 37P two-photon microwave transition in Rydberg atoms of sodium in a constant electric field. Depending on the conditions of excitation of the initial 36P state (the constant electric field is switched on either before or after the exciting laser pulse) and polarization of laser radiation, a strong variation is observed of the amplitudes of individual two-photon transitions between the fine-structure Stark components of the 36P and 37P states. This effect is an analog of the Paschen-Back effect in a strong magnetic field and is due to the break of L-S coupling and to the variation of the wave functions of Rydberg electrons in an electric field. It is also found that the break of L-S coupling affects considerably the shape of double Stark resonance arising upon intersection of the virtual intermediate level of two-photon transition with the real intermediate 37S level.     

Extension of the range of resonator scanning spectrometer into submillimeter band and some perspectives of its further developments

Extension of the working frequency of modern resonator spectrometers into submillimeter wave range is described. Experimental record of atmospheric absorption spectrum covering 45-370 GHz range is demonstrated for the first time, and measured water vapor J′_{ka′, kc′}-J_{ka, kc} = 5_1,5-4_2,2 at 325 GHz line parameters are presented. For the first time pressure lineshift for the 325-GHz water vapor line is measured. Further extension of working range is discussed. New estimations of physical limits of time needed for measurements of absorption in the whole Backward Wave Oscillator (BWO) range are given for phase continuous synthesizer regime. Basic schemes of fast broadband continuous phase synthesized sources are discussed. Verification of the previous measurements of water vapor 3_1,3-2_2,0 at 183 GHz line parameters is presented. Comparisons with ringdown resonator spectrometers are given.     

A new method for the reduction of nitronyl nitroxides

Reduction of nitronyl nitroxides using hexamethylenetetramine is a very convenient method for preparing the corresponding imino nitroxides and 2-imidazoline N-oxides.     

Hydrothermal synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) Na<Subscript>x</Subscript>TiO<Subscript>2</Subscript> nanostructures

Nanorods of sodium titanium dioxide bronze Na_xTiO₂ were synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment of the amorphous TiO₂·nH₂O gel with 10 M NaOH followed by ultrasonication in 0.1 M HCl and thermal treatment (500°C, 10 h). The thermal treatment of the nanorods does not change the morphology of the particles. According to the electron diffraction data, the Na_xTiO₂ nanorods grow along the c axis.__________Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. Properties and structures of porphyrexides

The molecular and crystal structures of porphyrexides, viz., 4-amino-2-imino-(1) and (Z)-2-amino-4-bromoimino-5,5-dimethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole 1-oxyls (7), and their diamagnetic precursors were determined. Compound 1 is kinetically unstable because it is oxidized with atmospheric oxygen to form (E)-1,2-bis[1-amino-1-(cyanoimino)-2-methyl-propan-2-yl]diazene 1,2-dioxide. 1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition in the synthesis of pyrazolyl-substituted nitronyl nitroxides

A new approach to the synthesis of polyfunctional pyrazolyl-substituted nitronyl nitroxides was developed based on the presynthesized pyrazole derivatives prepared by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. The structures of the resulting mono-and biradicals were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Dedicated to Academician A. L. Buchachenko on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Esters of 4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-1-oxyl-3-oxide-carboximidic acid

Esters of 4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-1-oxyl-3-oxide-carboximidic acid were synthesized. Their structures and magnetic properties were investigated.     

Phase equilibria and thermodynamics of coexisting phases in rare-earth element-iron-oxygen systems. II. The praseodymium-iron-oxygen system

The phase equilibria and the thermodynamics of coexisting phases in the PrFeO system have been studied using static and dynamic methods for attaining equilibrium with subsequent annealing and identification of the condensed phases by X-ray analysis. Equilibrium phase diagrams have been constructed to define the changes that take place in the PrFeO system on variation of the partial oxygen pressure, the temperature, and the composition of the initial mixture of oxides. An isothermal cross section at 1300°K and equilibrium diagrams of the type P_O2 = f(composition) with with one composition parameter fixed and T = f(composition) with P_O2 = constant have been constructed. It has been shown in the PrFeO system that only one ternary compound with perovskite structure, PrFeO₃, is formed, and furthermore, it is stable no matter how high the partial oxygen pressure.     

Low-temperature oxidative chlorination of methane over supported platinum chloride catalyst

The Pt^II (catalyst)+Pt^IV (oxidant) system with a deficiency of Cl ligands is active in the oxidative chlorination of alkanes not only in aqueous solutions but also in the SiO₂-supported state. In heterogeneous as well as in homogeneous conditions, the reaction proceeds at 100°C through platinum-alkyl intermediates.
