A stereocontrolled synthesis of 4′-hydroxymethylated ribo-$\text{C}$-nucleosides and a new psico-$\text{C}$-nucleoside has been accomplished on the basis of the [3 + 4] reductive cyclocoupling reaction of α,α,α′,α′-tetrabromoacetone and furfuryl acetate.     

Regiospecific α-dialkoxymethylation of preformed enolates

Reaction of a preformed lithium enolate and trimethyl orthoformate with added boron trifluoride leads to the corresponding α-dimethoxymethyl ketone.     

Selective hydrogenation of benzophenones to benzhydrols. Asymmetric synthesis of unsymmetrical diarylmethanols

[reaction: see text] trans-RuCl2[P(C6H4-4-CH3)3]2(NH2CH2CH2NH2) acts as a highly effective precatalyst for the hydrogenation of a variety of benzophenone derivatives to benzhydrols that proceeds smoothly at 8 atm and 23-35 degrees C in 2-propanol containing t-C4H9OK with a substrate/catalyst ratio of 2000-20000. Use of a BINAP/chiral diamine Ru complex effects asymmetric hydrogenation of various ortho-substituted benzophenones and benzoylferrocene to chiral diarylmethanols with consistently high ee.     

A general synthesis of primary prostaglandins

Combination of ($\text{R}$)-4-$\text{t}$-butyldimethylsiloxy-2-cyclopentenone, ($\text{S}$)-($\text{E}$)-3-$\text{t}$-butyldimethylsiloxy-1-iodo-1-octene, and 6-methoxycarbonyl-2-hexynal via the tandem organo-copper conjugate addition—aldol reaction procedure leads directly to a 5,6-dehydroprostaglandin E₂ derivative, which can be transformed to a variety of chiral primary prostaglandins in a stereoselective manner.     

A stereocontrolled synthesis of C-4′ alkylated pyrimidine C-nucleosides

A general, stereocontrolled synthesis of pyrimidine $\text{C}$-nucleosides possessing an alkyl group at the C-1′ or C-4′ position is outlined.     

Synthesis of the ABCD ring of gambierol

A fully functionalized ABCD ring moiety of gambierol, a marine polycyclic ether toxin, was synthesized by the use of the oxiranyl anion strategy and reductive cycloetherification of a beta,delta-dihydroxy ketone.     

Synthesis of trans-fused polycyclic ethers with angular methyl groups using sulfonyl-stabilized oxiranyl anions

An efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of trans-fused tetrahydropyrans with angular methyl groups adjacent to the ring oxygen. The procedure involves the coupling reaction of a sulfonyl-stabilized oxiranyl anion with an appropriate triflate followed by 6-endo cyclization, and is effective for the construction of 6/6- and 6/7/6-cyclic ether ring systems with sterically congested 1,3-diaxial methyl groups.
