We describe a successful search for a sequence of fifteen consecutive integers, each the product of exactly four prime factors. Fifteen is best possible.

     

On additives, morphological evolution and dielectric breakdown in low density polyethylene

A series of low density polyethylene systems has been studied with respect to structural evolution and short-term dielectric breakdown behaviour. All materials were based upon a single polymer, that is commonly used in high voltage applications, but with different additives. In all three of these systems, multiple melting transitions were observed, as a result of molecular fractionation effects during crystallization. In the virgin polymer, a space-filling banded spherulitic morphology was found to develop at low temperatures (102 °C and below) whereas, at higher temperatures, only a few isolated axialites were observed. Inclusion of the antioxidant resulted in greatly increased nucleation densities, such that, at low temperatures, no evidence of spherulitic organisation remained. At higher temperatures, sheaf-like lamellar aggregates developed, which were much smaller and much more numerous than in the case of the virgin polymer. Further addition of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) resulted in the rapid formation of a crosslinked network at 200 °C. Some crosslinking also occurred at 150 °C, but over a much longer timescale. Where extensive crosslinking occurred prior to crystallization, the resulting gel inhibited structural development, such that only a few small, isolated sheaves were able to form at 102 °C. In view of the principal application area of this material, the breakdown strength of each of the above systems was then measured and the whole data set was analysed statistically. When structural factors were considered alongside the statistics, no clear trends emerged to indicate that either the compositional or morphological variations were reflected in the short-term electrical failure processes.     

Pulsed laser deposition of nanostructured Ag films

Ultra-thin (0.5-5 nm) films of Ag have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition in vacuum using a 26 ns KrF excimer laser at 1 J cm⁻². The deposition was controlled using a Langmuir ion probe and a quartz crystal thickness monitor. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the films are not continuous, but are structured on nanometer size scales. Optical absorption spectra showed the expected surface plasmon resonance feature, which shifted to longer wavelength and increased in strength as the equivalent film thickness was increased. It is shown that Maxwell Garnett effective medium theory can be used to calculate the main features of optical absorption spectra.     

Reactivity of 3-alkyl-4-arylazomethylene-3,4-dihydro-1,2,3-benzotriazines in protic solvents: 1,4-Addition reactions and dimroth rearrangement

3-Alkyl-4-arylazomethylene-3,4-dihydro-1,2,3-benzotriazines 5a and 5b undergo facile 1,4-addition of methanol or ethanol to afford stable crystalline hydrazones, 6 and 8 which have been characterised by spectroscopic analysis. In particular, the nmr spectrum of 8 shows novel features due to the diastereotopic nature of the CH₂ protons in the two O-ethyl groups. Compound 5b shows a property unique to the compounds in this series; refluxing this arylazomethylenetriazine in ethanol affords a rearranged product, characterised as the 1-aryl-2-cinnolinylhydrazine ( 9 ). The formation of 9 is rationalised as a ring opening-ring closure process analogous to the Dimroth rearrangement. The cinnoline 9 displays some novel chemistry arising from the facility of the arylhydrazino substituent to react with acid to give a fragmentation product, 3-methylindazole ( 7 ).     

Dynamical fermions in lattice gauge theories: Metropolis and Langevin techniques in two dimensions

A variety of techniques for the inclusion of dynamical fermions in lattice gauge theory is examined. Three pseudo-fermionic techniques that have the characteristics desirable for an unquenched simulation of four-dimensional QCD are studied in detail. Langevin and Metropolis pseudo-fermionic techniques are implemented for a 64×64 lattice on the Distributed Array Processor and their relative merits examined both for free fermions and the lattice Schwinger model.     

On a nonlinear multigrid algorithm with primal relaxation for the image total variation minimisation

Digital image restoration has drawn much attention in the recent years and a lot of research has been done on effective variational partial differential equation models and their theoretical studies. However there remains an urgent need to develop fast and robust iterative solvers, as the underlying problem sizes are large. This paper proposes a fast multigrid method using primal relaxations. The basic primal relaxation is known to get stuck at a ‘local’ non-stationary minimum of the solution, which is usually believed to be ‘non-smooth’. Our idea is to utilize coarse level corrections, overcoming the deadlock of a basic primal relaxation scheme. A further refinement is to allow non-regular coarse levels to correct the solution, which helps to improve the multilevel method. Numerical experiments on both 1D and 2D images are presented.     

A Model of the Perishable Inventory System With Reference to Consumer-Realized Product Expiration

A new model of the perishable inventory system is presented, which recognizes and incorporates the effects of consumer-realized product expiration. Such expiration has not been explicitly treated within the perishable inventory literature, and occurs when units are expired at the time of sale or expire within some short period of time subsequent to purchase. The model treats the age at which the vendor outdates units as a decision variable, and allows for analysis of the interaction between inventory ordering and outdate policy for a perishable item with random lifetime. As such, the model represents a synthesis of the fixed versus random lifetime perishable inventory literatures. Sensitivity analysis conducted with respect to the new model provides insight into the trade-offs between the costs of carrying, shortage, outdating, and consumer-realized product expiration.     

Modified Equations for Stochastic Differential Equations

We describe a backward error analysis for stochastic differential equations with respect to weak convergence. Modified equations are provided for forward and backward Euler approximations to Itô SDEs with additive noise, and extensions to other types of equation and approximation are discussed.
