Nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization in miniemulsion: Bimolecular termination in monomer‐free model systems

Bimolecular termination in nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization in miniemulsion has been investigated through the heating of a polystyrene–2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy macroinitiator and its 4‐hydroxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy analogue in an aqueous toluene dispersion with sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate as a surfactant at 125 °C. The level of bimolecular termination by combination, evaluated from the high‐molecular‐weight shoulder, was higher in miniemulsion than in solution and increased with decreasing particle size. Quantitative analysis revealed that these results cannot be rationalized solely by nitroxide partitioning to the aqueous phase. The results are explained by an interface effect, by which nitroxide is adsorbed or located at the aqueous–organic interface. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Influence of Relative Permeability on the Stability Characteristics of Immiscible Flow in Porous Media

Relative permeability functions for immiscible displacements in porous media show a wide range of profiles. Although, this behavior is well known, its impact on the stability of the displacement process is unexplored. Our analysis clearly demonstrates for the first time that the viscous instability characteristics of two-phase flows are governed not only by their end point values, but are strongly dependent on the actual profile of relative permeability functions. Linear stability analysis predicts the capacity of the flow to develop large scale fingers which can result in substantial bypassing of the resident fluid. It is observed that relative permeability functions attributed to drainage processes yield a more unstable displacement as compared to functions related to imbibition processes. Moreover, instability is observed to increase for those relative permeability functions which result from increased wettability of the wetting fluid. High accuracy numerical simulations show agreement with these predictions and demonstrate how large amplitude viscous fingers result in significant bypassing for certain relative permeability functions. In the nonlinear regime, the finger amplitude grows at a rate ∝ t^1/2 initially, drops to t^1/4 at a later time and finally grows ∝ t. The basic mechanisms of finger interaction, however, are not substantially influenced by relative permeability functions.     

Synthesis and studies of antibacterial activity of pongaglabol

Pongaglabol [8-hydroxy-5-phenyl-furo[2,3-h]benzo(b)pyran-7-one] was synthesized and tested for antibacterial effects againstShigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, Streptococcus β-haemolyticus andStaphylococcus aureus. Thermal behaviour of ethynyl and ethenyl terminated imide resins

A series of ethynyl and ethenyl end-capped imide resins were synthesised by the reaction of 9,9-bis(4-aminophenyl) fluorene (BAF) with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)3/3′, 4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA)/2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxy phenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6F) and 3-ethynyl aniline/maleic anhydride. Structural characterisation was done by infra red and elemental analysis. Thermal characterisation was done by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The decomposition temperatures of cured resins were above 200°C in nitrogen atmosphere. Char yield at 800°C ranged from 59–65.5%.     

Large-volume stacking in capillary electrophoresis using pH hysteresis of the electroosmotic flow in a bare fused-silica capillary

For large-volume stacking with the electroosmotic flow pump (LVSEP) in capillary electrophoresis of anionic analytes it is required that the electroosmotic mobility (EOM) should be smaller than the magnitudes of the effective mobilities of the analytes. When a fused-silica capillary is treated with an acidic solution, the silanoate group on the silica surface is neutralized to silanol and the EOM is suppressed. Due to the slow deprotonation equilibrium of the silanol group at an intermediate pH, this reduced EOM can be retained during a number of electrophoresis runs. Using a bare fused-silica capillary preconditioned with 0.01 M HCl, successful LVSEP at pH 6.0 was achieved for weakly acidic compounds with two orders of magnitude enhancements in the concentration sensitivity. The repeatability in migration times of ten analytes stacked by LVSEP in a single day was excellent with the relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 1% (n = 6). The day-to-day repeatability was also excellent with RSD less than 3% (n = 3 x 6) when the capillary was preconditioned each day.     

Crystal structure of dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 potassium 2-nitrophenoxide

The first crystal structure of a potassium cation complex with dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 is reported. The potassium 2-nitrophenoxide complex ofsyn-cis-syn dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P with cell constantsa=8.604(2),b=10.772(4),C=16.123(5)Å, =73.86(3)°,=77.61(3)°, =82.68(3)° andZ=2 forD _c =1.31 g cm^–3. Least-squares refinement based on 2742 observed reflections led to a final conventionalR value of 0.040. Dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 has the shape of a saddle with the potassium cation sitting at the saddlepoint. The structure of the 2-nitrophenoxide anion is dominanted by the quinoid resonance contributor. Because the complex is devoid of significant intercomplex interactions, it is a prototypical 1:1:1 complex. Thiol-mediated radical cyclization: regioselective formation of indole-annulated sulfur heterocycles by tandem cyclization

Indole-2-yl-prop-2-ynyl sulfides, under thiophenol-mediated alkenyl radical cyclization conditions, afforded exclusively 4-thiophenyl-2,3,4,9-tetrahydrothiopyrano[2,3-b]indoles or 3-thiophenylmethyl-2,3,8-trihydrothieno[2,3-b]indoles depending on the substituent at the indole nitrogen.
