Interference of spin splittings in magneto-oscillation phenomena in two-dimensional systems

The spin splitting caused by the terms linear in wavevector in the effective Hamiltonian containing can give rise to the new magneto-oscillation phenomena in two-dimensional systems. It is shown that the joint action of the spin-dependent contributions due to the heterostructure asymmetry and to the lack of inversion center in the bulk material suppresses beats that arise in the magneto-oscillation phenomena in the presence of the terms of only one of these types.

A planar XeCl-exilamp pumped by a low-pressure glow discharge

The energy characteristics of an XeCl exciplex lamp with planar construction pumped by a low-pressure gas discharge are investigated experimentally. When a discharge gap of width 2 cm and a Xe-Cl₂ mixture were used, average radiation powers up to 20 mW were obtained in the wavelength interval 200–380 nm at efficiencies of ∼0.4%. In this case the total efficiency of radiation into an angle of 4π exceeded 4%. It is shown that increasing the working pressure and using low discharge currents can lead to “point” radiation sources. Zh. Tekh. Fiz. 67, 43–46 (December 1997)     

Ultrashort electron beam and volume high-current discharge in air under the atmospheric pressure

Conditions are studied under which an electron beam and a volume discharge with a subnanosecond rise time of a voltage pulse are produced in air under atmospheric pressure. It is shown that the electron beam appears in a gas-filled diode at the front of the voltage pulse in ∼0.5 ns, has a half-intensity duration of ≤0.4 ns and an average electron energy of ∼0.6 of the voltage across the gas-filled diode, and terminates when the voltage across the gap reaches its maximum value. The electron beam with an average electron energy of 60 to 80 keV and a current amplitude of ≥70 A is obtained. It is assumed that the electron beam is formed from electrons produced in the gap due to gas ionization by fast electrons when the intensity of the field between the front of the expanding plasma cloud and the anode reaches its critical value. A nanosecond volume discharge with a specific power input of ≥400 MW/cm³, a density of the discharge current at the anode of up to 3 kA/cm², and specific energy deposition of ∼1 J/cm³ over 3 to 5 ns is created.     

Spectral and kinetic characteristics of the pulsed cathodoluminescence of a natural IIa-type diamond

Emission spectra and decay kinetics of pulsed cathodoluminescence of a natural IIa-type diamond sample are investigated in the spectral range 340–680 nm. The luminescence of the vibronic N3-system and band A are observed. The N3-system is dominant on a nanosecond scale and has a 415.2-nm zero-phonon line with phonon replicas in the range 430–460 nm. The decay time for the N3 system is found to be 30–50 ns. Structureless band A is observed on a millisecond scale; it has a maximum at 460 nm and a decay time of 8.5–8.8 ms. __________ Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 1, pp. 53–57, January, 2007.     

Singular parts of contractive analytic operator functions

One considers the class _G of holomorphic functions in a domain G, whose values are contractions in a separable Hilbert space. It is proved that if T(·) _G , T(z₀) is a weak contraction, its singular part T^s(z₀) is complete, and the increments T(z)–T(z₀) are not too large (for example, finite-dimensional), then the operator T^s(z₀) is complete for almost all zG. If, however, T(z₀) is, in addition, completely nonunitary and satisfies definite smoothness conditions, then in the nontrivial case the spectrum [z] of the contraction T^s(z) (zG) is a thin set: The proof of the mentioned results is based on the investigation of the formulas obtained in the paper, connecting the characteristic functions of the contractions T(z) for different values of zG.Translated from Zapiski Nauchnykh Seminarov Leningradskogo Otdeleniya Matematicheskogo Instituta im. Phototransformations of Phenols in Aqueous Solutions under Different Excitation Modes

The photolysis of aqueous solutions of two widespread environmental organic ecotoxicants—phenol and 4-chlorophenol—on excitation by UV radiation from a KrCl exciplex laser and a glow-discharge KrCl excilplex lamp was studied. The irradiated solutions were studied by spectroscopic techniques. The laser and lamp photolyses were compared.
