Efficient Synthesis of Bis(4-Dimethaminophenyl)arylmethanes and Bis(4-Diamethaminophenyl)alkanes Using Iodine Reagent

A novel synthetic utility of NaICl₂ for the preparation of bis(4-dimethaminophenyl)arylmethanes and bis(4-dimethaminophenyl)alkanes is described. In the presence of an aqueous solution of NaICl₂, the reaction of arenes with aromatic aldehydes gives corresponding triarylmethane derivatives regioselectively in moderate to good yields. The method is also useful for the preparation of diarylalkane derivatives by using aliphatic aldehydes.

A novel method for bromodecarboxylation of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids using catalytic sodium nitrite

A first novel synthetic utility of catalytic sodium nitrite in combination with aqueous HBr, for bromo decarboxylation of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid is described. α,β-Unsaturated carboxylic acid compounds successfully converted into corresponding bromo compounds. The advantages of this protocol are shorter reaction time and moderate to good yields.     

Differential inhibition of postnatal brain,spinal cord and body growth by a growth hormone antagonist

Background  

Growth hormone (GH) plays an incompletely understood role in the development of the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we use transgenic mice expressing a growth hormone antagonist (GHA) to explore the role of GH in regulating postnatal brain, spinal cord and body growth into adulthood. The GHA transgene encodes a protein that inhibits the binding of GH to its receptor, specifically antagonizing the trophic effects of endogenous GH.     

Measurement of environmental gamma dose levels around Udupi district of coastal Karnataka,India

The outdoor and indoor environmental gamma dose rates in air have been measured in several parts of Udupi district, Karnataka, India using thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs). The outdoor annual gamma dose values varies in the range 0.49–1.17 mGy/year with mean 0.75 ± 0.18 mGy/year. Similarly indoor annual gamma dose varies in the range 0.51–1.10 mGy/year with mean 0.74 ± 0.13 mGy/year. The mean values of indoor and outdoor gamma dose rates were 84 and 86 nGy/h respectively with indoor to outdoor dose ratio of 1.02.     

Reaction of Oximes of α-Diketones with Diphosphorous Tetraiodide for Preparation of Oxadiazoles and Nitriles

The utility of diphosphorous tetraiodide as a new, mild, condensing agent for synthesis of oxadiazole is described. These data indicate the simple dehydration of oximes to 1,2,5-oxadiazole as well as the rearrangements of oximes to normal Beckmann product 1,2,4-oxadiazole. However, mono-oxime of benzil undergoes abnormal Beckman rearrangement to benzaldehyde as major product. The described method is simple and important for the synthesis of the oxadiazoles as well as for nitriles.     

Preparative-scale synthesis of amino coumarins through new sequential nitration and reduction protocol

In contrast to the conventional deleterious approach for nitration (for example HNO₃/H₂SO₄) and for reduction (for example Zn/HCl), we hypothesized that sensitive heterocycles such as coumarins could not withstand with those hard conditions. Hence, while studying this reaction sequence to prepare amino coumarins (which is our ongoing project to synthesize antitubercular coumarin agents), we came across mild and greener reagent for nitration using calcium nitrate (Ca(NO₃)₂·4H₂O; lime nitrate), and reduction using d-glucose. These two mild, chemoselective, high yielding methods are discussed herein.     

Carbon-carbon cleavage of aryl diamines and quinone formation using sodium periodate: a novel application

A first novel synthetic utility of sodium periodate for aryl diamine carbon-carbon cleavage is described. Aryl 1,2-diamine compounds were successfully converted into corresponding nitriles, while the developed method is also useful for the preparation of quinones from corresponding aryl 1,4-diamine compounds. The advantages of this protocol are shorter reaction time and mild reaction conditions to obtain moderate to good yields.     

Relativistic self-focusing of cosh-Gaussian laser beams in a plasma

In the present paper, we have proposed to exploit an analysis of a self-consistent, steady state, theoretical model, which explains the propagation of cosh-Gaussian laser beams in a plasma. The nonlinearity we have considered is of relativistic type. Using the expression for the dielectric function, we have setup the differential equation for beam-width parameter using the WKB and paraxial approximations. The effect of decentred parameter of the beam on the critical curve and the dependence of the beam-width on the distance of propagation have been specifically considered. The results have been presented in the form of graphs and discussed.     

Highly enantioselective Pd-catalyzed allylic alkylation using new chiral ferrocenylphosphinoimidazolidine ligands

New ferrocenylphosphinoimidazolidines containing central chirality and planar chirality were found to act as highly effective chiral ligands in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation of 1,3-diphenyl-2-propenyl acetate with dimethyl malonate.
