Studying the properties and stability of silicon nanoparticles (Si-np) in aqueous environments may lead to novel applications in biological systems. In this work, we use absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to characterize ultrasmall Si-np prepared through anodic etching and ultrasonic fractionation of a crystalline Si wafer. Their behavior is studied over time in 2-propanol and during treatments with water, NaOH, HCl, and H(2)O(2). The observed population is divided into two types of material: bright species consisting of well-etched Si-np, approximately 1 nm in diameter, and dark species derived from partially etched or aggregated Si structures. The dark material is seen by its scattering in the 2-propanol and water solutions and is largely removed via precipitation with the NaOH or HCl treatment. The bright material includes three distinct species with their respective emissions in the UV-B, UV-A, and hard-blue regions of the spectrum. The hard-blue PL is shown to have a simple pH dependence with a pK(a) approximately 3, providing an important insight into its chemical origin and signaling for possible application of Si-np as environmental probes. Our results offer some potential for tailoring the PL properties of ultrasmall Si-np through control of their surface chemistry. 相似文献

Nonlinear resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (NRUS) is a resonance-based technique exploiting the significant nonlinear behavior of damaged materials. In NRUS, the resonant frequency(ies) of an object is studied as a function of the excitation level. As the excitation level increases, the elastic nonlinearity is manifest by a shift in the resonance frequency. This study shows the feasibility of this technique for application to damage assessment in bone. Two samples of bovine cortical bone were subjected to progressive damage induced by application of mechanical cycling. Before cycling commenced, and at each step in the cycling process, NRUS was applied for damage assessment. For independent assessment of damage, high-energy x-ray computed tomography imaging was performed but was only useful in identifying the prominent cracks. As the integral quantity of damage increased, NRUS revealed a corresponding increase in the nonlinear response. The measured change in nonlinear response is much more sensitive than the change in linear modulus. The results suggest that NRUS could be a potential tool for micro-damage assessment in bone. Further work must be carried out for a better understanding of the physical nature of damaged bone and for the ultimate goal of the challenging in vivo implementation of the technique. 相似文献

Analysis of sound propagation in a complex urban estuary has application to underwater threat detection systems, underwater communication, and acoustic tomography. One of the most important acoustic parameters, sound attenuation, was analyzed in the Hudson River near Manhattan using measurements of acoustic noise generated by passing ships and recorded by a fixed hydrophone. Analysis of the ship noise level for varying distances allowed estimation of the sound attenuation in the frequency band of 10-80 kHz. The effective attenuation coefficient representing the attenuation loss above cylindrical spreading loss had only slight frequency dependence and can be estimated by the frequency independent value of 0.058 dBm. 相似文献

Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for the oxidative addition of H2 to [Rh(I)(bpy)2]+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) to form [Rh(III)(H)2(bpy)2]+ were determined from either the UV-vis spectrum of equilibrium mixtures of [Rh(I)(bpy)2]+ and [Rh(III)(H)2(bpy)2]+ or from the observed rates of dihydride formation following visible-light irradiation of solutions containing [Rh(III)(H)2(bpy)2]+ as a function of H2 concentration, temperature, and pressure in acetone and methanol. The activation enthalpy and entropy in methanol are 10.0 kcal mol(-1) and -18 cal mol(-1) K(-1), respectively. The reaction enthalpy and entropy are -10.3 kcal mol(-1) and -19 cal mol(-1) K(-1), respectively. Similar values were obtained in acetone. Surprisingly, the volumes of activation for dihydride formation (-15 and -16 cm(3) mol(-1) in methanol and acetone, respectively) are very close to the overall reaction volumes (-15 cm(3) mol(-1) in both solvents). Thus, the volumes of activation for the reverse reaction, elimination of dihydrogen from the dihydrido complex, are approximately zero. B3LYP hybrid DFT calculations of the transition-state complex in methanol and similar MP2 calculations in the gas phase suggest that the dihydrogen has a short H-H bond (0.823 and 0.810 Angstroms, respectively) and forms only a weak Rh-H bond (1.866 and 1.915 Angstroms, respectively). Equal partial molar volumes of the dihydrogenrhodium(I) transition state and dihydridorhodium(III) can account for the experimental volume profile found for the overall process. 相似文献

Non-linear resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (NRUS) is a technique exploiting the significant non-linear behavior of damaged materials, related to the presence of damage. This study shows for the first time the feasibility of this technique for damage assessment in bone. Two samples of bovine cortical bone were subjected to a progressive damage experiment. Damage accumulation was progressively induced in the samples by mechanical testing. For independent assessment of damage, X-ray CT imaging was performed at each damage step, but only helped in the detection of the prominent cracks. Synchrotron micro-CT imaging and histology using epifluorescence microscopy were performed in one of the two samples at the last damage step and allowed detection of micro-cracks for this step. As the quantity of damage accumulation increased, NRUS revealed a corresponding increase in the non-linear response. The measured change in non-linear response is much more sensitive than the change in elastic modulus. The results suggest that NRUS could be a potential tool for micro-damage assessment in bone. Further work has to be carried out for a better understanding of the physical nature of damaged bone, and for the ultimate goal of in vivo implementation of the technique where bone access will be a challenging problem. 相似文献

Three new xanthones, named calaxanthones A-C (1–3), along with 17 known xanthones (4–20) were isolated from the roots of Calophyllum calaba. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against five cancer cell lines (KB, HeLa S-3, HT-29, MCF-7 and HepG-2). Compound 3 showed potent cytotoxicity against all the five cancer cell lines with IC50 values in the range of 0.82–5.04 μM. Furthermore, compound 6 showed potent cytotoxicity against KB, HeLa S-3 and HepG2 cells with IC50 values of 7.06, 5.27 and 9.64 μM, respectively. Additionally, compound 7 showed potent cytotoxicity against KB cell with an IC50 value of 4.62 μM. 相似文献
