Excess volume of mixing of some electron-donating hydrocarbons with an electron-accepting liquid 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene

The excess volume of mixing of some electron-donating aromatic hydrocarbons like benzene, toluene,p-xylene, and mesitylene with an electronaccepting liquid 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene have been measured at 30°C. The results indicate that the interaction between the components increases as the electron-donating power of the hydrocarbons increases. The V _m ^e values are related to the ionization potentials of the hydrocarbons.     

Micron Particles of AlN/Al: Efficient,Novel, and Reusable Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Bis(indolyl)methanes

The present work introduces for the first time the catalytic utility of micron particulate aluminium nitride (AlN/Al) as a novel and reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of bis(indolyl)methanes involving the electrophilic substitution of indoles on aldehydes. The catalyst is recyclable and works without any significant change in its catalytic activity.     

Dielectric characteristics of neodymium heptamolybdate crystals grown by gel encapsulation technique

Results obtained from the dielectric studies of neodymium heptamolybdate crystals grown in the system Nd(NO₃)₃ –MoO₃ –NH₄OH– HNO₃ —Na₂SiO₃ by gel encapsulation technique are presented. The variation of dielectric constant (ε′), dielectric loss (tanδ) and conductivity (σ) with frequency at different temperatures is studied. The dielectric constant of the material increases sharply, attains a peak value and then decreases rapidly, as material's temperature rises from room temperature to higher degrees. The temperature at which the peak value is attained is the transition temperature of the material. Dielectric loss (tan δ) follows almost a similar behaviour. The conductivity (σ) is also found to be temperature-and frequency-dependent. This sharp rise in ε′ is attributed to the contribution from space charge polarization. Theoretically obtained data using the expression ε′ = a₀ + a₁ T² and —In σ = a + b(T — T₀)² for T < T₀) fits very well with the experimentally obtained data indicating that space charge polarization increases as some power of temperature larger than one.     

Growth of lanthanum heptamolybdate crystals by gel technique

The growth of single crystals of lanthanum heptamolybdate is achieved by allowing controlled diffusion of La ions through silica gel using the system La(NO₃)₃ MoO₃ NH₄OH HNO₃–Na₂SiO₃. The reaction mechanism leading to the growth is reported. Mechanism of crystallization of La heptamolybdate is discussed. Formation of Liesegang rings consisting of La heptamolybdate crystals in the system is reported. It is observed that concentration programming and seeded growth enhances the size of crystals. The crystals grown in the system are single crystal platelets exhibiting squarish or octagonal facets. Some crystals exhibit a spherulitic morphology.     

Aziridine carboxylate from D-glucose: synthesis of polyhydroxylated piperidine, pyrrolidine alkaloids and study of their glycosidase inhibition

The D-glucose derived aziridine carboxylate 5 was obtained from (E)-ethyl-6-bromo-1,2-O-isopropylidene-3-O-benzyl-5-deoxy-alpha-D-xylo-5-eno-heptofuranuronate 4 through conjugate addition of benzylamine and in situ intramolecular nucleophilic expulsion of bromine. The regioselective aziridine ring-opening, using water as a nucleophile, resulted in the alpha-hydroxy-beta-aminoester 6, which was exploited in the synthesis of six and five membered azasugars 1b/1c and 2b/2c, respectively. The glycosidase inhibitory activity of the title compounds was evaluated.     

Facile Hydrolysis of Esters with KOH-Methanol at Ambient Temperature

Summary. A simple, rapid, and efficient method is reported for the hydrolysis of a variety of mono- and diesters of aromatic, aliphatic, fatty, and heterocyclic acids with potassium hydroxide in methanol at ambient temperature (35°C).     

Facile reductive coupling of benzylic halides with ferrous oxalate dihydrate

Facile reductive coupling of benzylic halides is reported with ferrous oxalate dihydrate in DMF or HMPA under nitrogen atmosphere at 155-160 degrees C. The coupling is proposed to proceed by two successive oxidative additions of benzylic halides to ferrous oxalate to give an intermediate organoiron complex which undergoes concerted dimerization to give the corresponding reductively coupled dimers in high yields.     

A new flavone C-glucoside from Glycosmis arborea (Rutaceae)
