Enantiomeric synthesis of the key synthon of the oviposition-deterring pheromone of Rhagoletis cerasi L

A convenient and enantioselective synthesis of ethyl (8RS, 15R)-8-acetoxy-15-hydroxyhexadecanoate15 via a chemoenzymatic approach has been described. The salient features of the synthesis were operational simplicity, use of easily accessible materials, and excellent enantiocontrol via lipase catalyzed acetylation of 2-alkanol.     

Machine assignment in a nonlinear multi-product flowline

A group of machines for processing a set of jobs in a manufacturing system is often located in a serial line. An efficient strategy for locating these machines such that the total travel distance or the cost of transporting the jobs is minimized is desired. In this research, the assumption of a linear line with equally spaced machine location is relaxed. This research addressed problems of locating unique machines. It is found that the machine distances possess unique properties in this type of a problem. Utilizing these properties, heuristic strategies are proposed to obtain efficient solution where optimal methods are expected to be computationally prohibitive. A lower bound for the optimum solution is also proposed. Results are encouraging.     

Gamma ray photon-induced modifications in Triafol-TN and Triafol-BN polymeric track detectors

Photon induced modifications in Triafol-TN and Triafol-BN polymers have been studied in the dose range of 10¹–10⁶ Gy at room temperature using a ⁶⁰Co source. To monitor the chemical and structural changes induced by gamma rays, UV, IR, and ESR studies were carried out. Thermal studies were also conducted for understanding the effects of gamma irradiations on these polymers. Variation of track etching characteristics and activation energy for bulk etching have been studied at different gamma rays doses. The experimental results are presented and discussed.     

Preparation of highly branched poly(vinyl acetate) by transfer to allylic carbonate comonomers

Copolymerization of vinyl acetate with allyl carbonates that contain isopropyl groups yields highly branched poly(vinyl acetates).     

Kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of acetaldehyde by chromic acid in perchloric acid

Summary The oxidation of MeCHO by chromium(VI) has been studied in HClO₄ medium over a wide range of experimental conditions and has been found to obey the rate law;v=k[MeCHO][HCrO ₄ ^– ][H⁺]. The calculated H and-S values for the reaction are 30±2kJ mol^–1 and 171±7J mol^–1deg^–1, respectively. The mechanism is discussed in terms of carbon-hydrogen bond cleavage.     

XY-ZH compounds as potential 1,3-dipoles. Part 63: Silver catalysed azomethine ylide cycloaddition—the synthesis of spiro homoserine lactone analogues

A range of room temperature 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of imines of 2-amino-γ-lactone and thiolactone, catalysed by a combination of AgOAc or Ag₂O with NEt₃ or DBU, are described. The spiro lactones/thiolactones are formed regio- and stereoselectively as single cycloadducts in good yield via the syn dipoles and an endo-transition states.     

Biyclo[2.2.1]heptane as cyclopentane precursor. Part 4 Stereocontrolled syhthesis of a potential intermediate to chromophycane dolastane and clavularane

The regio– and stereoselective synthesis of the keto-esters 20 and 22 are described, the latter being a potential intermediate to several diterpenes. The key steps involve the Diels-Alder cycloaddition between the benzocycloheptenone 5 and cyclopentadiene followed by a regioselective functionalisation of the adduct 6. A remarkable reversal of regioselectivity was observed during oxymercuration of the unsymmetric double bond in 6 and its reduced product 11 leading to 8 and 12 which were subsequently transformed to 20 and 22 respectively.
