Regioorientation in the reaction of side chain activated alkylpyridines with electrophiles

X-ray structural data has shown that condensation of sym-3-nitrocollidine with benzaldehyde occurs at the 6-methyl group. The presence of an acceptor group in the side chain of 2,6-dimethyl-4-cyanomethyl-3-nitropyridine causes condensation to occur at the activated methylene group in the 4-position.M. V. Cubane derivatives 1. Synthesis and molecular structures of the esters of 1,4-cubanedicarboxylic acid

An effective method of esterification of 1,4-cubanedicarboxylic acid with alkylsulfuric acids is proposed. The derivatives of alkanols with substantially different pK_a Valus are obtained in high yields. Molecular structures of the esters obtained are confirmed by various methods. The X-ray study showed a remarkable effect of the nature of an alkyl radical on the geometry of the cubane core.Translated fromIzyestiya Akademii Nauk. Synthesis and crystal structure of 1,3,5-tris [4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]benzene

The crystal structure of 1,3,5-tris[4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]benzene (1) has been investigated. Compound1 represents a model of the repeating unit of the most typical polyphenylene, which contains 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene rings (chain centers) and acetylenic groups (complex-forming and cross-linking centers) in the main chain. The acetylene groups of neighboring molecules have a tendency to close mutual arrangement, which is favorable for their topochemical interaction. However, the relative conformational rigidity of molecules1 restricts not only the possibility of the optimal adjustment of the reactive sites of neighboring molecules to one another, but also hampers the close packing of molecules in the crystal, which contains channels filled by the solvent molecules (chloroform).Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Crystal and molecular structure of 3β-acetoxy-22S,25-epoxyholosta-7,9(11)-dien-17α-ol

A complete x-ray structural investigation has been made of 3-acetoxy-22S,25-epoxyholosta-7,9(11)-dien-17-ol. Important conformational differences between this compound and its 17-deoxy derivative have been found which show the mobility of the conformation of rings B and C of the holostane series and the tetrahydrofuran ring of the side chain of the molecule. It has been shown that the conformation of the side chain of the molecule is stabilized by an 017-H...022 intramolecular hydrogen bond, without excluding the possibility of the participation of the hydroxy group in the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds (bifurcated).Pacific Ocean Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok. Synthesis and structure of anhydrodimers of salicylaldehydes

Anhydrodimers have been synthesized by reactions of salicylaldehyde and 3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylaldehyde with SOCl₂ or PCl₅.
