This paper describes an investigation of turbomixers as replacements for mixing coils in FIA. The turbomixer is a device that will efficiently mix three streams simultaneously. Although the traditional FIA gradient is not produced, the data shows that the reproducibility of a turbomixer continuous flow system is comparable to a standard FIA system.  相似文献

pH‐responsive hydrogels are capable of converting chemical energy to mechanical work. To optimize their use as actuators, their response when operating against an external load must be fully characterized. Here, the actuation strain of a model pH‐sensitive hydrogel as a function of different constant loads is studied. The experimental actuation strain, produced by switching the pH from 2 to 12, decreases significantly and monotonically with increasing initial tensile load. Two models are developed to predict the actuation strain as a function of applied stress. Simple mechanical models based on the change in hydrogel modulus and cross sectional area due to the change in pH are unsatisfactory as they predict only a small change in actuation strain with increasing external stress. However, the model based on the elastic and mixing free energy functions derived from the Flory–Huggins theory is found to accurately account for the actuation strain as a function of stress. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electroactive conducting polymers for corrosion control   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
There is an intensive effort underway to develop new corrosion control coatings for structural metals. In part, this effort has been motivated by the desire to replace chromium(VI)-containing coatings currently used for corrosion control of iron and aluminum alloys. Cr(VI) has been shown to be hazardous to the environmental and to human health, and its use in many countries will be sharply curtailed in the coming years. Electroactive conducting polymers (ECPs) represent a class of interesting materials currently being explored for use in corrosion control coating systems, possibly as a replacement for Cr(VI)-based coatings. The electroactivity and the electronic conductivity (or semiconductivity) of ECPs set them apart from traditional organic coatings. As with chromate, interesting and potentially beneficial interactions of ECPs with active metal alloys such as steel and aluminum are anticipated, with concomitant alteration of their corrosion behavior. A review of this active research area will be presented in two parts. Here in Part 1, a general introduction to the topic of corrosion control by ECPs will be presented, including an overview of corrosion and its control by traditional methods, an introduction to ECPs and their properties, and a discussion of the processing issues surrounding the use of ECPs as coatings. Part 1 also includes a review of the literature on the use of ECPs as coatings (or components of coatings) on non-ferrous active metals, principally aluminum and aluminum alloys, although some work on zinc, copper, silver, titanium and silicon will also be described. In Part 2 of this review (to be published in the next issue of this journal), the rather extensive literature on the use of ECPs for the corrosion control of ferrous alloys (steels) will be reviewed. The purpose of the present article is to extend the scope of some investigations about abstract logics arising quite naturally out of Quasi-MV algebras (for short, qMV algebras) also to ?{}\sqrt{^{\prime}} qMV algebras. We will therefore introduce, mutually compare and (in some cases) axiomatise several logics arising out of the variety of ?{}\sqrt{^{\prime}} qMV algebras and out of some important subclasses of such. Subsequently, we will investigate the same logics by resorting to the methods and techniques of abstract algebraic logic.  相似文献

Hydrogen bonds are known to play an important role in prescribing the mechanical performance of certain hydrogels such as polyether-based polyurethanes. The quantitative contribution of hydrogen bonds to the toughness of polymer networks, however, has not been elucidated to date. Here, a new physical model is developed to predict the threshold fracture energies of hydrogels physically crosslinked via hydrogen bonds. The model is based on consecutive and sequential dissociation of hydrogen-bonded crosslinks during crack propagation. It is proposed that the scission of hydrogen bonds during crack propagation allows polymer strands in the deformation zone to partially relax and release stored elastic energy. The summation of these partial chain relaxations leads to amplified threshold fracture energies which are 10–45 times larger than those predicted by the classical Lake–Thomas theory. Experiments were performed on a hydrophilic polyurethane hydrogel where urea additions were used to control the density of hydrogen bonds.
