Gas chromatographic assay with pharmacokinetic applications for monitoring T-2 and HT-2 toxins in plasma

A gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) method for monitoring T-2 and HT-2 toxins in plasma was developed. The procedure involved extraction of the toxins with ethyl acetate, chromatography on a C18 reversed-phase column and derivatization with heptafluorobutyric anhydride (HFBA). The T-2 and HT-2 HFBA derivatives were chromatographed on OV-17 at various temperatures and measured with an electron-capture detector. Iso-T-2 toxin and iso-HT-2 toxin were used as internal standards. Recoveries averaged 95.1 +/- 8.6% for T-2 toxin and 102.1 +/- 5.2% for HT-2 toxin at levels ranging from 40 to 120 ng/ml. The limits of detection were 30 and 5 ng/ml of T-2 and HT-2 toxin, respectively. The range of the assay covers plasma concentrations at which toxicity becomes manifest. The pharmacokinetic application of this GLC method is illustrated by simultaneous monitoring of T-2 and HT-2 toxins levels in plasma obtained after intravenous administration of T-2 toxin to a dog.     

Mechanism of copper underpotential deposition at Pt(<Emphasis Type="Italic">hkl</Emphasis>)-electrodes: Quantum-chemical modelling

Mechanism of copper underpotential deposition at stepped faces of platinum single crystals Pt(hkl) is studied using cyclic voltammetry, scanning probe microscopy, and quantum-chemical modelling. It is shown that the first stage of UPD is one-dimensional decoration of the (100)- or (110)-orientated steps, then copper monolayer forms at (111)-terraces. The final stage is the secondary step decoration. Quantum-chemical modelling, with the using of long-distance potentials of the Cu-Pt and Cu-Cu pair interactions, allows estimating the energy of copper adsorption at different structure elements of the substrate (steps, kinks, terraces) and revealing the succession of the adatom monolayer formation; it also provides additional information for the identifying of the nature of voltametric peaks for different stages of the copper adsorption-desorption.

Spatial beam properties of combined lasers' delivery fibers

The superiority of parabolic-index fibers over step-index fibers in delivering high-beam-quality light out of incoherently combined lasers is demonstrated numerically and experimentally. By utilizing the tapered fused bundle-combining approach and connecting it with delivery fiber, we point to an efficient, rugged, all-glass, integrated, and nearly brightness-preserving device that is capable of transmitting high-quality output beams.
