On the S-procedure and Some Variants

We give a concise review and extension of S-procedure that is an instrumental tool in control theory and robust optimization analysis. We also discuss the approximate S-Lemma as well as its applications in robust optimization.The many suggestions and detailed corrections of an anonymous referee are gratefully acknowledged.     

Thermosensitive mucoadhesive gel formulation loaded with 5-Fu: cyclodextrin complex for HPV-induced cervical cancer

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infections are the major cause of cervical cancers. To achieve a better therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance in the treatment for HPV-induced cervical cancers, anticancer agent 5-fluorouracil has been formulated in a vaginal gel using the thermosensitive polymer Pluronic^® F127 together with alternative mucoadhesive polymers e.g., hyaluronic acid, Carbopol 934 and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. To increase its aqueous solubility and to achieve the complete release of 5-FU from the gel, the drug was incorporated as its inclusion complex with 1:1 molar ratio with either β-cyclodextrin or hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin. Following the characterization of drug:CD complexes, thermosensitive gel formulations containing different mucoadhesive polymers and the drug in free or complexed form were characterized in vitro by determining the gelation temperature and the rheological behavior of different formulations along with the in vitro release profiles of these formulations in pH 5.5 citrate buffer. It was observed that complexation with cyclodextrin accelerated the release of 5-FU with the exception of formulation containing Carbopol 934 as mucoadhesive polymer. As far as rheological properties are concerned, favorable thermosensitive in situ gelling properties were obtained with formulations containing HPMC as mucoadhesive polymer. Complete release of 5-FU from gels were obtained with both complexes of β-CD and HP-β-CD and cytotoxicity studies against HeLa human cervical carcinoma cells demonstrated that 1% 5-FU:CD complexes were equally effective as 1% free 5-FU indicating better therapeutic efficacy with lower dose.     

Synthesis of N-(4′-Benzo[15-crown-5])biphenylaminoglyoxime and Its Complexes with Some Transition Metals

N-(4-Benzo[15-crown-5])biphenylaminoglyoxime (H₂L) and sodium chloride salt of N-(4-benzo[15-crown-5])biphenylaminoglyoxime (H₂L · NaCl) have been prepared from 4-biphenylchloroglyoxime, 4-aminobenzo[15-crown-5], and sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride. Nickel(II), cobalt(II), and copper(II) complexes with H₂L and H₂L · NaCl have a metal–ligand ratio of 1 : 2 and the ligand coordinates through the two N atoms, as do most of the vic-dioximes. Their IR spectra and elemental analyses are given, together with ¹H NMR spectra of the ligands.

Voltammetric behavior of rutin at a boron-doped diamond electrode. Its electroanalytical determination in a pharmaceutical formulation

This paper examined for the first time, the possibilities of the usage of a boron-doped diamond electrode for the redox behavior of rutin using cyclic and adsorptive stripping voltammetry. The cyclic voltammograms showed a pair of redox peaks at lower potentials followed by an irreversible oxidation peak at higher positive potential. Using square-wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry, the compound yielded a well-defined voltammetric response in Britton-Robinson buffer, pH 4.0 at +0.48 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) (after 60 s accumulations at a fixed potential of 0.2 V). The calibration curve was linear in the concentration range from 0.01 µg mL^?1 to 0.1 µg mL^?1 (1.64×10^?8 M ? 1.64×10^?7 M). A detection limit of 0.0017 µg mL^?1 (2.78×10^?9 M) was observed without any chemical modifications and electrochemical surface pretreatments. As an example, the practical applicability of boron-doped diamond electrode was tested with the measurement of rutin in dietary supplement products.      

Preparation of Methyl 6‐O‐p‐Nitrobenzoyl‐β‐d‐Glucoside

Methyl 6‐O‐p‐nitrobenzoyl‐β‐d‐glucoside was synthesized by reacting methyl 4,6‐O‐p‐nitrobenzylidine‐β‐d‐glucoside with N‐bromosuccinimide (NBS). First, methyl β‐d‐glucoside was converted into methyl 4,6‐O‐p‐nitrobenzylidine‐β‐d‐glucoside with p‐nitrobenzaldehyde. Later, methyl 4,6‐O‐p‐nitrobenzylidine‐β‐d‐glucoside was opened oxidatively with NBS to give methyl 6‐O‐p‐nitrobenzoyl‐β‐d‐glucoside.
