Preparative method of obtaining L- and D-2-hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acids

Summary A preparative method was developed for obtaining L-and D-2-hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acids by the separation of racemic 2-hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid with the aid of D-and L-threo-2-amino-1-p-nitrophenyl-1,3-propanediols.     

Heating of ultracold neutrons on beryllium surfaces

The temperature dependence of the loss factor for ultracold neutrons owing to heating at thermal energies on the surface of a beryllium sample is studied. The probability of heating ultracold neutrons is anomalously high throughout the entire measured temperature interval, but especially at low temperatures. Zh. éksp. Teor. Observation of the penetration of subbarrier ultracold neutrons through beryllium foils and coatings

The subbarrier passage of ultracold neutrons through beryllium foils and coatings with a probability much higher than that of tunneling is observed. Microstructural Features and Electrophysical Characteristics of Ceramic–Crystal Matrix Composites

The electrophysical properties of ceramic–crystal matrix composites are studied. Piezoelectrically active PZT/LiNbO₃ ceramic matrix composites with LiNbO₃ concentrations of 0–20 vol % are fabricated. Complex elastic, dielectric, and piezoelectric parameters are measured, and the microstructural characteristics of the obtained samples are studied experimentally. It is found that the extreme electrophysical properties of ceramic–crystal matrix composites depend on the properties and structure of the piezoceramic matrix and crystalline filler, and on the matrix microporosity produced during sintering. The electrophysical parameters of ceramic–crystal matrix composites as functions of crystalline filler content are established through the competing microporosity growth effects of the ceramic matrix and the increase in crystalline filler content.     

New Techniques and Designs of Focusing Piezoelectric Transducers for Ultrasonic Diagnostics and Therapy

New techniques of forming high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) fields using dynamic focusing and harmonic multifrequency excitation are developed for ultrasonic diagnostics and therapy. New designs of HIFU transducers based on high-performance composite materials are developed and studied. Finite-element and finite-difference simulations of HIFU transducers and processes of ultrasonic wave propagation in biological tissues are performed. The parameters of piezoceramic materials, piezoelements, and the acoustic fields of focusing ultrasonic transducers are measured. Experiments are performed on biological tissues ex vivo that confirm the efficiency, selectivity, and safety of the developed HIFU transducers and techniques of forming acoustic fields.     

Orientational optical torque in a nematic liquid crystal,caused by trans- and cis-isomers of low- and high-molecular compounds

The effect of light on the conformational composition of low- and high-molecular (fifth-generation dendrimer) azobenzene dyes in a nematic host is studied. The orientational optical response of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC), caused by the presence of these compounds in the nematic host, is measured. The contributions of isomers to the orientational optical torque affecting the NLC director are determined. The results obtained suggest that the increase in the optical orientation efficiency in NLCs when using high-molecular dopants instead of low-molecular ones is unrelated to the difference in their conformational composition in the light field, but is caused by deceleration of orientational motion of chromophores.
