Polarization Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy on ionic single crystal surfaces: Davydov splittings, adsorbated structures and 2D-phase transitions on NaCl(100) and MgO(100)

Polarized infrared spectra of adsorbates on NaCl(100) and MgO(100) single crystal cleavage planes reveal Davydov splittings, structures with adsorbate orientations and/or 2D-phase transitions, in concert with diffraction studies. CO₂ on NaCl shows the sharpest adsorbate spectra known ( ).     

Ambient-pressure vapor deposition of octanethiol self-assembled monolayers

Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to characterize self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of octanethiol on Au(111), created using vapor deposition at elevated temperatures and ambient pressure. Monolayers contained large, close-packed ( radical3 x radical3)R30 degrees domains with sizes considerably larger than those typically formed from conventional solution-phase preparation and with crystallographically straight domain boundaries. New striped surface phases were also observed, including a 13 x radical3 phase with a density that was 69% of the close-packed density; these striped phases appeared topographically higher in STM images than close-packed monolayers.     

Convergent synthesis of a 24-membered macrocyclic hexaoxazole derivative related to the novel telomerase inhibitor telomestatin

An efficient construction of a 24-membered macrocyclic hexaoxazole derivative pertinent to the synthesis of analogues of the important natural product telomestatin was developed, which featured a convergent union of two trisoxazole units.     

A diversity oriented synthesis of d-erythro-sphingosine and siblings

An efficient building block-based synthetic protocol has been developed for the synthesis of 3-ketosphingoids with various chain lengths using cross metathesis of a Garner’s aldehyde-derived α,β-unsaturated ketone as the key step. Stereoselective reduction of the biomimetic precursors thus obtained provided d-erythro-sphingosine and truncated anaogues in good overall yields.     

X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy process optimization for characterization of trace contamination elements for extreme ultraviolet resist outgassing study

X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used for elemental identification and quantification in a number of fields, and the optimization of XPS performance can help in making better use of the limited XPS tool availability. In the field of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, one of the requirements is having a clean vacuum environment to minimize contamination of the EUV optics. EUV resist outgassing is viewed as one of the main issues that could affect the vacuum environment. There is a program underway to measure the relative contamination rates from different resists following the ASML (provider of lithography systems) approved protocols for witness plate testing. One of the key steps is the XPS measurement of residue on the optics after cleaning. The role of XPS in quantification of species that adhere to the ruthenium‐coated silicon witness plate sample is discussed. The various XPS tool parameters like the pass energy and source setting were optimized for our application of witness plate analysis. The statistics of our XPS tool were studied, and combined with the fundamental XPS equations, a simple mathematical model was developed to optimize the number of scans for the various elements of interest in our witness plate study. Using the optimized number of scans, the acquisition time to measure the contaminant elements to a precision better than 0.1 at.% was minimized. Determination of Required HLB of Capryol 90

The required hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of an oily substance indicates the HLB of the surfactants required to prepare a stable emulsion using the oil. This study utilizes empirical method to calculate required HLB (RHLB) of Capryol 90 using surfactant blends (Span 20, Tween 20, vitamin E TPGS, Pluronic F68, Span 60, and Tween 80). The methods used were assessment of degree of creaming after centrifugation and after shelf storage for 28 days at room temperature, turbidimetric method, accelerated stability study, and droplet size analysis. The droplet size was found to be in the range of 15 to 2 µm and v/v% separation after centrifugation was found to be 0–82%. The RHLB for Capryol 90 was found to be 15. The effect of various surfactant blends was investigated. Results revealed that a blend of tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS) and Pluronic F68 gave the most stable emulsion for Capryol 90.
