A generalization of Lomonosov's inequality and its applications to invariant subspaces

In this article we generalize Victor Lomonosov's famous inequality so as to be applicable to a wider class of functions. Then using it we prove that the adjoint of an algebra with a compactness property which is weaker than the PS property, employed by Victor Lomonosov, has nontrivial invariant subspaces.

     

Colorizing mechanism of brass surface by femtosecond laser induced microstructures

In this paper, we exhibit the colorizing of brass surfaces by forming femtosecond laser induced microstructures on the sample surfaces. A variety of single colors such as brown, yellow, green, and black are introduced on brass surfaces by engineering periodic microgratings, microholes, and ring-shaped micro-patterns using Single Beam Direct Laser Writing (SBDLW) technique. The color of the micro-structured brass surfaces is certainly dependent on the width, depth, and period of the microstructures. Finally, we explain, in brief, the colorizing mechanism of metals by femtosecond laser induced microstructures.     

Reactivity Ratios and Sequence Distribution Characterization by Quantitative 13C NMR for RAFT Synthesis of Styrene‐Acrylonitrile Copolymers

The kinetics and reactivity ratios of styrene‐acrylonitrile (SA) copolymerization have been studied extensively in bulk and in a variety of solution media using conventional free radical polymerizations (FRPs). Due to the significant difference in the two reactivity ratios for this monomer pair, at certain feed ratios the copolymers display composition drift with conversion due to monomer depletion. In this study, the kinetics of SA copolymerization using Reversible Addition‐Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) has been studied in bulk at 80 °C. The reactivity ratios for the terminal model were calculated from the comonomer sequence distributions for the RAFT process at low conversion for nine different compositions and found to be in the same range as those reported for conventional FRP of SA. The changes in the composition and sequence distribution with conversion were studied for three feed compositions. The copolymers show compositional drift with conversion, except at the azeotropic composition, and match the predictions from the reactivity ratios obtained at low conversion. From quantitative ¹³C NMR the triad distributions of these copolymers were estimated and found to match the predicted triad distributions as conversion increased. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Synthesis of Acylated Steroidal Olefins and Their Derivatives

Acylation of cholest-5-ene and cholest-5-ene 3-one with anhydrides in the presence of zinc chloride and characterization of products thus obtained on the basis of elemental analysis, spectral data, and chemical transformations are reported.     

Electronic and optical properties of Sr3X2 (X=N,P, As,Sb and Bi) compounds: first principles study

ABSTRACT

Direct bandgap semiconductors are very essential to fulfil the demand for the advancement in optoelectronic devices. Therefore it is important to predict new potential candidates having such unique features. In current work, Sr₃X₂ (X=N, P, As, Sb and Bi) compounds have been reported for the first time by well trusted FP-APW+lo method. For the better prediction of the energy band gap, mBJ is used alongwith routine generalised gradient approximation (GGA). The results show small and direct energy band gaps at Γ-Γ symmetry points with magnitude in the range from 0.62?eV (Sr₃P₂) to zero energy band gap (Sr₃Bi₂). In partial density of state Sr-d state and X-p state are contributed in the band structure. The compounds show mostly covalent bonding nature. The frequecy dependent optical properties in the linear optical range are also investigated.     

Efforts toward the total synthesis of (-)-kendomycin

[structure: see text] The synthesis of an advanced component leading to (-)-kendomycin is described. The synthetic scheme features the application of asymmetric conjugate addition methodology for the early generation of the C13-C14 (E)-trisubstituted olefin, providing an efficient assembly of the ansa chain. Condensation reactions probe two strategies for attachment of the aromatic system.     

Generation of vortices by a streamwise oscillating cylinder

The wake of a streamwise oscillating cylinder is presently investigated. The Reynolds number investigated is 300, based on the cylinder diameterd. The cylinder oscillates at an amplitude of 0.5d and a frequencyf _e/f_s=1.8, wheref _e is the cylinder oscillating frequency andf _s is the natural vortex shedding frequency of a stationary cylinder. Under these conditions the flow is essentially two dimensional. A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation (DNS) scheme has been developed to calculate the flow. The DNS results display a street of binary vortices, each containing two counter-rotating vortical structures, symmetrical about the centerline, which is in excellent agreement with measurements. The drag and lift on the cylinder have been examined. The time averaged drag and lift are 1.4 and 0, respectively, which are the same as those on a stationary cylinder at the sameRe. However, the fluctuating drag was high, about 2.68. It has been found that, being symmetrically formed about the centerline, the binary vortices induce an essentially zero fluctuating lift, which may have a profound implication in flow control and engineering.
