Cycloaddition reactions of 5-deutero-1-phenyl-4-vinylpyrazole. Stereoselectivecis “ene” reaction and simplification of NMR spectra of mixtures of cycloadducts

Summary The reaction of methyl propiolate (MP) with 1-phenyl-4-vinylpyrazole deuterated in the five position has clarified the¹H NMR spectrum of the mixture of the adducts 1:2 which are obtained as a result of a Diels-Alder cycloaddition followed by a non-regioselective ene reaction. The deuterated substrate allowed at the same time to establish the stereochemistry of the ene reaction as a concertedcis process.

Zusammenfassung Die Reaktion von Methylpropiolat (MP) mit an der 5-Stellung deuteriertem 1-Phenyl-4-vinylpyrazol wurde zur vereinfachten Interpretation der¹H-NMR-Spektren einer 1:2 Mischung von Addukten aus der Diels-Alder-Cycloaddition mit nachfolgender nicht-regioselektiver en-Reaktion eingesetzt. Das deuterierte Substrat erlaubte zugleich auch die Bestimmung der Stereochemie der en-Reaktion als einen konzertiertencis-Prozeß.

     

Ultraviolet protection factors for clothing: an intercomparison of measurement systems

In recent years the need to standardize measurement protocols for quantifying the degree of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protection provided by clothing has led to the introduction of a number of standards around the world. To date, these standards have specified spectral measurements of UVR transmission by clothing and fabrics. Development of a standard test method has become an important part of the testing process, and this article presents results from an intercomparison involving 10 independent testing laboratories and 11 different UVR transmission measurement instruments. In addition to comparing the measured ultraviolet protection factors (UPF), this intercomparison also incorporates detailed scan results from all 10 laboratories and highlights differences in performance of the various instruments in different wavelength regions. Careful examination of these differences can indicate where changes to the systems could be made to allow improvements both in equipment performance and in agreement of the final results. The variability in the measurements of UPF in this study suggest that the protection categories in standards may need to be broadened.     

The reactivity of 2-vinylindoles with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate

The overall rates of reaction of 1-substltuted-1- (1-methyl-2-indolyl)ethenes with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate are considerably lower than those of the corresponding 2-vinyl- pyrroles. Steric interaction between the N-methyl group on the indole ring and the 1-substituent on the ethenyl group prevents the diene system adopting a coplanar $\text{cisoid}$ configuration and, thereby, inhibits the _π4 + _π2 cycloaddition reaction of the system with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate. Under such conditions, the indolylethene preferentially undergoes a Michael addition reaction at the 3-position. The _π4 + _π2 cycloaddition reaction is promoted at elevated temperatures. No evidence was found for a Cope rearrangement of the Michael adducts to give the dihydrocarbazole.     

A laboratory investigation of ground erosion and dust generation by air cushion vehicles

The erosion process which occurs when an air cushion vehicle (ACV) passes over certain types of surface material has been investigated. Experiments were conducted in laboratory apparatus which simulates conditions under the edge of an ACV skirt.

Tests were carried out on three samples of dry erodible materials for a variety of cushion parameters. Representative photographs and data on time rates of erosion are presented. The results indicate that erosion rates are proportional to cushion pressure to the power 3/2 and that skirt angle, hoverheight and time since start of a run are of secondary importance. The results and analysis indicate that erosion rates are independent of particle size when this exceeds about 0.1 mm.     

Stabilization of mixture of two rigid solids modeling temperature and porosity

In this paper we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the initial boundary value problem for a mixture of two rigid solids modeling temperature and porosity. Our main result is to establish conditions which ensure the analyticity and the exponential stability of the corresponding semigroup.     

Approximation of Solutions of Fractional-Order Delayed Cellular Neural Network on $$\varvec{[0,\infty )}$$

In this paper, we study a class of fractional-order cellular neural network containing delay. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium solution followed by boundedness. Based on the theory of fractional calculus, we approximate the solution of the corresponding neural network model over the interval \([0,\infty )\) using discretization method with piecewise constant arguments and variation of constants formula for fractional differential equations. Furthermore, we conclude that the solution of the fractional-delayed system can be approximated for large t by the solution of the equation with piecewise constant arguments, if the corresponding linear system is exponentially stable. At the end, we give two numerical examples to validate our theoretical findings.     

A strict topology on Orlicz spaces

Let φ be a Young function, Ω be a locally compact space, and μ be a positive Radon measure on Ω. We consider a strict topology (in the sense of Sentilles‐Taylor) on the Orlicz function space and investigate various properties of this locally convex topology. We also study the Orlicz space of a locally compact group G with a left Haar measure under the strict topology and certain other natural locally convex topologies. Finally we present some results on various continuity properties of convolution operators on under the topology and other natural ones.
