Abstract An X-ray study is performed on powder specimens and on stretched oriented fibres of two liquid crystalline polyacrylates containing the azobenzene mesogenic unit with either a 4′-n-pentyloxy (sample 1–4) or 4′-n-hexyloxy (sample 1–5) substituent. The X-ray diffraction patterns of both samples showed the presence of a bilayer smectic C mesophase with the mesogneic groups tilted by an angle β ~ 45° (1–4) or β ~ 38° (1–5) with respect to the layer normal. The electron density profile p(z) along the direction normal to the smectic layers was calculated by Fourier inversion and possible structural models of the smectic mesophase are discussed. A partial interdigitation of the terminal alkyloxy substituents appears to occur. 相似文献

A smectic B (S,) solvent may provide a very highly ordered, and possibly oriented, host medium for polymerization processes. Photochemical polymerizations of two bisacrylic monomers were therefore carried out in a SB medium. The process conditions were chosen on the basis of a preliminary study of the monomer-solvent binary system carried out by differential scanning calorimetry (D.S.C.), optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The polymerization was then studied by D.S.C. at different reaction times. These measurements showed clearly that there is a point along the reaction path at which the growing polymer chains start segregating from the solvent and the mesomorphic bulk no longer acts as a reaction solvent but only as a reservoir for the ponomer. The polymer chains from that point keep growing only upon or between the faces of the SB layers. Electron microscopy observations showed that the morphology of the final polymer is affected by this interlayer process. 相似文献

Electrochemical behaviour of dialkyltin compounds in 80% (v/v) ethanol has been investigated by different electrochemical techniques such as polarography, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry and it has been found to give three polarographic reduction waves. The first step involves the formation of an ion-radical which is further reduced in the second step to the dibutyltin diradical. Dibutyltin diradical undergoes polymerization as well as further reduction in two parallel processes. A procedure has been developed for determining these compounds down to p.p.b. level. 相似文献

In developing physical theories, analogical reasoning has been found to be very powerful, as attested by a number of important historical examples. An analogy between two apparently different phenomena, once established, allows one to transfer information and bring new concepts from one phenomenon to the other. Here, we discuss an important analogy between two widely different physical problems, namely, the Jahn–Teller distortion in molecular physics and the Rashba spin splitting in condensed matter physics. By exploring their conceptual and mathematical features and by searching for the counterparts between them, we examine the orbital texture in Jahn–Teller systems, as the counterpart of the spin texture of the Rashba physics, and put forward a possible way of experimentally detecting the orbital texture. Finally, we discuss the analogy by comparing the coexistence of linear Rashba + Dresselhaus effects and Jahn–Teller problems for specific symmetries, which allow for nontrivial spin and orbital textures, respectively. 相似文献

The 1+3 covariant approach and the covariant gauge-invariant approach to perturbations are used to analyze in depth conformal
transformations in cosmology. Such techniques allow us to obtain insights on the physical meaning of these transformations
when applied to non-standard gravity. The results obtained lead to a number of general conclusions on the change of some key
quantities describing any two conformally related cosmological models. For example, even if some of the geometrical properties
of the cosmology are preserved (homogeneous and isotropic Universes are mapped into homogeneous and isotropic universes),
it can happen that decelerating cosmologies can be mapped into accelerated ones. From the point of view of the cosmological
perturbations it is shown how these fluctuation transform. We find that first-order vector and tensor perturbations equations
are left unchanged in their structure by the conformal transformation, but this cannot be said of the scalar perturbations,
which present differences in their evolutionary features. The results obtained are then explicitly interpreted and verified
with the help of some clarifying examples based on f(R)-gravity cosmologies. 相似文献

Due to large sidewall and bead thicknesses, multi-piece rims are necessary for use with large off-the-road (OTR) tyres. This paper presents the testing protocol and observed load/deflection and vertical/sidewall deflection characteristics of three Goodyear OTR tyre assemblies, namely, (1) a radial 29.5R29 (2) a bias-ply 29.5-29, and (3) a bias-ply 26.5-26. Localized tyre deformations and rim displacements were measured using optical displacement transducers and post-processing high-speed camera images using digital image analysis software. A validation analysis illustrated a maximum difference of 4.05% of vertical wheel displacements between the aforementioned methods. Quasi-static tests show the maximum values of vertical rim displacement and lateral tyre deflection are in the range of 72.2–78.9 mm and 23.3–27.1 mm, respectively, for a severe excitation condition. Differences ranging from 0.2% to 21.5% for maximum vertical and lateral tyre deflections were found between static load tests and engineering data provided by the tyre manufacturer. Linear relationships were observed for both vertical wheel displacement and lateral tyre deflection versus load for all tests. This study demonstrates a thorough methodology to study deflection characteristics of heavy duty OTR tyres and the collected data could be very useful in the development of numerical models of wheel and tyre assemblies for mining vehicles. 相似文献

A new facility to measure the time evolution of 2D velocity fields in a rotating channel is presented, and the accuracy is
discussed in detail. Measurements are made by means of a time-resolved PIV system composed of a continuous laser diode, coupled
by a fiber optics cable to a laser plane optical module, and a CMOS high-speed camera. Both the PIV system and divergent channel
are fixed on a 2.5 m rotating disk. This allows a direct measurement of the relative velocity of flows with Reynolds numbers
between 3 × 103 and 3 × 104 and Rotation numbers between 0.0 and 0.52. These values correspond to the flow conditions in small radial impellers and can
be independently adjusted by a change of the relative flow velocity and RPM. It is shown that this new facility allows high
signal-to-noise ratios, and that the direct acquisition of the data in a rotating frame drastically reduces the measurement
error. The accuracy and high spatial and temporal resolution of the measurements allow a detailed analysis of boundary layer
characteristics in stationary and rotating conditions. 相似文献
