We propose a novel approach to describe wetting of plane solid surfaces by liquid drops. A two-dimensional nonconserved phase field variable is employed to distinguish between wetted and nonwetted regions on the surface. The imbalance in the Young's force provides for the exchange of relative stability of the two phases. The three-phase contact line tension arises from the gradient energy and contact angle hysteresis from the kinetic coefficient. Using this theory, we discuss contact angle hysteresis on chemically heterogeneous surfaces. We show significant departure from the classical Cassie theory, which is attributed to defect pinning of the continuous triple line.  相似文献

1,4-Naphthoquinone (1,4-NQ) is an important product of naphthalene oxidation, and it appears as a motif in many biologically active compounds. We have investigated the structure of 1,4-NQ using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations. The rotational spectra of the parent species, and its 13C and 18O isotopologues were observed in natural abundance, and their spectroscopic parameters were obtained. This allowed the determination of the substitution rs, mass-weighted rm and semi-experimental reSE structures of 1,4-NQ. The obtained structural parameters show that the quinone moiety mainly changes the structure of the benzene ring where it is inserted, modifying the C−C bonds to having predominantly single or double bond character. Furthermore, the molecular electrostatic surface potential reveals that the quinone ring becomes electron deficient while the benzene ring remains a nucleophile. The most electrophilic areas are the hydrogens attached to the double bond in the quinone ring. Knowledge of the nucleophilic and electrophilic areas in 1,4-NQ will help understanding its behaviour interacting with other molecules and guide modifications to tune its properties.  相似文献

Electrostatic assembly of multilayered thin films through sequential adsorption of polyions in layer-by-layer fashion utilizes the strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged molecules. We perform molecular dynamics simulations of multilayers of flexible polyelectrolytes around a charged spherical particle. Our simulations establish that the charge reversal after each deposition step is a crucial factor for the steady layer growth. The multilayers appear to be nonequilibrium structures.  相似文献

The utility of the Cassie-Baxter formula to predict the apparent contact angle of a drop on rough hydrophobic surfaces has been questioned recently. To resolve this issue, experimental and numerical data for advancing and receding contact angles are reported. In all cases considered it is seen that contact angles follow the overall trend of the Cassie-Baxter formula, except for the advancing front on pillar type roughness. It is shown that deviations from the Cassie-Baxter angle have a one-to-one correlation with microscopic distortions of the contact line with respect to its configuration in the Cassie-Baxter state.  相似文献

Porphyrin-phospholipid (PoP) liposomes loaded with Doxorubicin (Dox) have been demonstrated to be an efficient vehicle for chemophototherapy (CPT). Multidrug resistance (MDR) of cancer cells is a problematic phenomenon in which tumor cells develop resistance to chemotherapy. Herein, we report that Dox-resistant tumor cells can be ablated using our previously described formulation termed long-circulating Dox loaded in PoP liposomes (LC-Dox-PoP), which is a PEGylated formulation containing 2 mol. % of the PoP photosensitizer. In vitro studies using free Dox and LC-Dox-PoP showed that human ovarian carcinoma A2780 cells were more susceptible to Dox compared to the corresponding Dox-resistant A2780-R cells. When CPT was applied with LC-Dox-PoP liposomes, effective killing of both nonresistant and resistant A2780 cell lines was observed. An in vivo study to assess the efficiency of LC-Dox-PoP showed effective tumor shrinkage and prolonged survival of athymic nude mice bearing subcutaneous Dox-resistant A2780-R tumor xenografts when they were irradiated with a red laser. Biodistribution analysis demonstrated enhanced tumoral drug uptake in Dox-resistant tumors with CPT, suggesting that increased drug delivery was sufficient to induce ablation of resistant tumor cells.  相似文献

We performed molecular dynamics simulations of multilayer assemblies of flexible polyelectrolytes and nanoparticles. The film was constructed by sequential adsorption of oppositely charged polymers and nanoparticles in layer-by-layer fashion from dilute solutions. We have studied multilayer films assembled from oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, oppositely charged nanoparticles, and mixed films containing both nanoparticles and polyelectrolytes. For all studied systems, the multilayer assembly proceeds through surface overcharging after completion of each deposition step. There is almost linear growth in the surface coverage and film thickness. The multilayer films assembled from nanoparticles show better layer stratification but at the same time have higher film roughness than those assembled from flexible polyelectrolytes.  相似文献

Bicontinuous microemulsions (BCMEs) have excellent solubulizing properties along with low interfacial tension and aqueous content that can be controlled. In this work, water soluble plant protease inhibitor (PI), well characterized for its activity against insect pests, was incorporated into a BCME system and explored for permeation on hydrophobic leaf surfaces and protease inhibition activity. The bicontinuous nature of the microemulsion containing water:2-propanol:1-butanol (55:35:10 w/w) was characterized using conductivity and self-diffusion coefficient measurements. The PI was soluble in the water-rich bicontinuous domains, stable in the microemulsions, and protease inhibition activity was retained for a prolonged duration. The microemulsions ensured greater wettability and a wider spread of the PI on hydrophobic leaf surfaces as revealed by contact angle measurements. Significantly, trypsin inhibition activity assays of the PI recovered from the leaves after delivery from the microemulsion indicated a significant increase in the PI retention on the leaf. This BCME enabled greater leaf permeation and retention of the PI can be attributed to a temporary disruption of the waxy leaf surface followed by self-repair without causing any long term damage to the plant.  相似文献

Cross-linking of myoglobin (Mb) promoted by 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-3-ethylcarbodiimide within films of polystyrene sulfonate after layer-by-layer self-assembly provided remarkable stabilization. Cross-linking greatly improved adhesion of the films to fused silica slides and allowed extensive optical studies over a wide pH range. Circular dichroism and visible absorbance spectra showed that Mb retained its native conformation when films were placed in solutions of pH as low as 2 and up to pH 11. Linear dichroism revealed an average orientation of the Mb iron heme cofactors of 58 degrees to the film normal. High concentrations of urea did denature the protein in the films, however. At pH 1, Mb in solution is fully unfolded but retained considerable alpha-helical content in the cross-linked films. Both the polyion film environment and cross-linking seem to play roles in stabilizing protein secondary structure and function at low pH. Cross-linked myoglobin-polyion films on pyrolytic graphite electrodes were used in strongly acidic solutions for the electrochemical catalytic reduction of trichloracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and oxygen. The pH-dependent catalytic reduction of trichloracetic acid was faster in 0.1 M HCl than in the medium pH range.  相似文献
