Photopyroelectric spectroscopy of Sb<Subscript>2</Subscript>O<Subscript>3</Subscript> - ZnO ceramics

Photopyroelectric spectroscopy is used to study the band-gap energy of the ceramic (ZnO + xSb₂O₃), x = 0.1 - 1.5 mol% and the ceramic (ZnO + 0.4 mol%  Bi₂O₃ + xSb₂O₃), x = 0 - 1.5 mol% sintered at isothermal temperature, 1280 °C, for 1 and 2 hours. The wavelength of incident light, modulated at 9 Hz, is kept in the visible range and the photopyroelectric spectrum with reference to doping level is discussed. The band-gap energy is reduced from 3.2 eV, for pure ZnO, to 2.86, 2.83 eV for the samples without Bi₂O₃at 0.1 mol% of Sb₂O₃ for 1 and 2 hours of sintering time, respectively. It is reduced to 2.83, 2.80 eV for the samples with Bi₂O₃ at 0 mol% of Sb₂O₃ for 1 and 2 hours of sintering time, respectively. The steepness factor σ_A which characterizes the slop of exponential optical absorption is discussed with reference to the doping level. The phase constitution is determined by XRD analysis; microstructure and compositional analysis of the selected areas are analyzed using SEM and EDX.     

Decoy states and two way quantum key distribution schemes

We study the possible application of the decoy state method on a basic two way quantum key distribution (QKD) scheme to extend its distance. Noting the obvious advantage of such a QKD scheme in allowing for single as well as double photon contributions, we derive relevant lower bounds on the corresponding gains in a practical decoy state implementation using two intensities for decoy states. We work with two different approaches in this vein and compare these with an ideal infinite decoy state case as well as the simulation of the original.     

Nonentagled qutrits in two way deterministic QKD

We consider the use of qutrits in a two way deterministic quantum cryptographic protocol which exhibits a higher level of security. We analyse the security of the protocol in the context of the Intercept Resend Strategy. The protocol which transmits a qutrit is naturally limited to not utilising all the available maximally overlapping basis due to a no go theorem not unlike the universal-NOT. We further propose another protocol to generalise the protocol above against the no-go theorem.     

A geranylacetophenone from the leaves of Melicope ptelefolia

The leaves of Melicope ptelefolia (Rutaceae) afforded a new acetophenone named 2,4,6-trihydroxy-3-geranylacetophenone. The structure of the compound was established by mass and NMR spectroscopy.     

Independent attacks in imperfect settings: A case for a two-way quantum key distribution scheme

We review the study on a two-way quantum key distribution protocol given imperfect settings through a simple analysis of a toy model and show that it can outperform a BB84 setup. We provide the sufficient condition for this as a ratio of optimal intensities for the protocols.     

Comment on new estimates of single photon parameters for satellite-based QKD

I comment on the results claiming to be new estimates for single photon parameters for satellite-based QKD in [1] to be based on a critical error in simple algebraic manipulations and further argue how their work would be more sensible upon the relevant corrections. However, this sensibility is at the price of rendering their conclusion nonjustifiable.     

Realization of 2-D OCDMA network using EDW code

The attraction towards two-dimensional optical code division multiple access (2D-OCDMA) systems has increased due to its potential in enhancing the performance of optical access networks and producing optical code-based signals. 2D-OCDMA network systems enable better bit-error-ratio (BER) performance as well as increase the number of supportable users in the optical network. Time-spreading wavelength-hopping is one of the many techniques that has been proposed for 2D-OCDMA. In this paper, we present the simulative study of a 2D-OCDMA system. The developed time-spreading, wavelength-hopping network utilizes enhanced double weight (EDW) code which has enhanced properties such as a cross-correlation value of 1 and has a simple encoder/decoder design. The output BER was satisfactory at above 10^?9 at data rate of 1.25 Gbps for 20 km distance with the ITU-T G.652 standard single mode optical fiber for 3 users.     

Inhibitory effects of phylligenin and quebrachitol isolated from Mitrephora vulpina on platelet activating factor receptor binding and platelet aggregation

Phylligenine, together with quebrachitol, stigmasterol and two aporphine alkaloids--oxoputerine and liriodenine--were isolated from the twigs of Mitrephora vulpina C.E.C. Fisch. They were evaluated for their ability to inhibit platelet activating factor (PAF) receptor binding to rabbit platelets using 3H-PAF as a ligand and their antiplatelet aggregation effect in human whole blood induced by arachidonic acid (AA), collagen and adenosine diphosphate (ADP). Of all the compounds tested, phylligenin and quebrachitol exhibited potent and concentration-dependent inhibitory effects on PAF receptor binding, with IC(50) values of 13.1 and 42.2 μM, respectively. The IC(50) value of phylligenin was comparable to that of cedrol (10.2 μM), a potent PAF antagonist. Phylligenin also showed strong dose-dependent inhibitory activity on platelet aggregation induced by AA and ADP.

A room‐temperature single‐crystal X‐ray structure determination of the title compound, C₂₁H₂₀O₈, confirms the stereochemical assignment made previously on the basis of spectroscopic studies [Shaari & Waterman (1994). J. Nat. Prod. 57 , 720–724].
