VECTOR FIELDS IN R2 WITH MAXIMAL INDEX

We consider the method of Poincaré to investigate thelocal index of vector fields in the plane. If m is the degreeof the first non-zero jet, X_m, of the vector field X at an isolatedzero, we explore the geometry of the pencil generated by thecoordinate functions of X_m when the absolute value of the indexof X, |ind (X)|, is m. We also find necessary and sufficientconditions for |ind (X)| to be m.     

Bismuth Modified Gold Microelectrode for Pb(II) Determination in Wine Using Alkaline Medium

Electrodeposition of bismuth on gold microelectrodes for determination of Pb(II) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) was accomplished by an in situ procedure in alkaline solution. A linear calibration plot for Pb(II) in the concentration range 40 to 6700 nmol L^?1 (r=0.998) was obtained, the detection limit was found to be 12.5 nmol L^?1 (S/N=3) and the relative standard deviation in solutions containing 1 μmol L^?1 Pb(II) was 4% (n=12). The analytical performance of the proposed sensor was tested by measuring the Pb(II) concentration in a wine sample. The result was in good agreement with the one obtained by GFAAS.     

Classifying codimension two multigerms

We generalise the operations of augmentation and concatenations defined in Cooper et al. (Compos Math 131(2):121–160, 2002) in order to obtain multigerms of analytic (or smooth) maps \((\mathbb {K}^n,S)\rightarrow (\mathbb {K}^p,0)\) with \(\mathbb {K}=\mathbb {C}\) or \(\mathbb {R}\) from monogerms and some special multigerms. We then prove that any corank 1 codimension 2 multigerm in Mather’s nice dimensions \((n,p)\) with \(n\ge p-1\) can be constructed using augmentations and these operations.

Let be a smooth map of a closed n-dimensional manifold (n2) into the plane and let be an orthogonal projection. We say that f has the standard lifting property, if every embedding with is standard in a certain sense. In this paper we give some sufficient conditions for a generic smooth map f to have the standard lifting property when M is a closed surface or an n-dimensional homotopy sphere.     

Numerical solution of the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the stream function and vorticity formulation

In this work we study the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes problem. We introduce a suitable technique based on the splitting of the vorticity into two components. Then we discretize in space the resulting uncoupled system by means of continuous Lagrange finite elements. This is achieved by first performing the semi-discretization in time of these equations by a classical characteristics method for the advective term. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Chemical Characterization and Bioactivity of Commercial Essential Oils and Hydrolates Obtained from Portuguese Forest Logging and Thinning

Essential oils (EOs) and hydrolates (Hds) are natural sources of biologically active ingredients with broad applications in the cosmetic industry. In this study, nationally produced (mainland Portugal and Azores archipelago) EOs (11) and Hds (7) obtained from forest logging and thinning of Eucalyptus globulus, Pinus pinaster, Pinus pinea and Cryptomeria japonica, were chemically evaluated, and their bioactivity and sensorial properties were assessed. EOs and Hd volatiles (HdVs) were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. 1,8-Cineole was dominant in E. globulus EOs and HdVs, and α- and β-pinene in P. pinaster EOs. Limonene and α-pinene led in P. pinea and C. japonica EOs, respectively. P. pinaster and C. japonica HVs were dominated by α-terpineol and terpinen-4-ol, respectively. The antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH, ORAC and ROS. C. japonica EO showed the highest antioxidant activity, whereas one of the E. globulus EOs showed the lowest. Antimicrobial activity results revealed different levels of efficacy for Eucalyptus and Pinus EOs while C. japonica EO showed no antimicrobial activity against the selected strains. The perception and applicability of emulsions with 0.5% of EOs were evaluated through an in vivo sensory study. C. japonica emulsion, which has a fresh and earthy odour, was chosen as the most pleasant fragrance (60%), followed by P. pinea emulsion (53%). In summary, some of the studied EOs and Hds showed antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and they are possible candidates to address the consumers demand for more sustainable and responsibly sourced ingredients.
