ABSTRACT

In a planar dielectric waveguide, weak confinement of a propagating mode in a high index core leads to a measurable evanescent interaction with the cladding. In this work, we study the effect of a reorientable anisotropic cladding on the behaviour of Transverse Electric (TE) and Transverse Magnetic (TM) mode polarisations using a liquid crystal (LC)-clad waveguide architecture. The polarised evanescent field of a guided mode interacts with a voltage-tunable birefringent LC cladding to deflect an out-coupled beam. Experimental measurements are coupled with a theoretical framework and show good consistency with simulation results. We isolate the effect of mode confinement by changing the thickness of the high index core. Interactions between the LC index ellipsoid and the mode polarisation are probed by changing the initial alignment of the LC. Finally, we examine the difference in deflection between TE and TM modes, which incorporates both a change in mode confinement and a difference in LC index components.  相似文献

By using bifunctional surface modifiers (SH-R-COOH), CdSe quantum dots (QDs) have been assembled onto mesoscopic TiO(2) films. Upon visible light excitation, CdSe QDs inject electrons into TiO(2) nanocrystallites. Femtosecond transient absorption as well as emission quenching experiments confirm the injection from the excited state of CdSe QDs into TiO(2) nanoparticles. Electron transfer from the thermally relaxed s-state occurs over a wide range of rate constant values between 7.3 x 10(9) and 1.95 x 10(11) s(-1). The injected charge carriers in a CdSe-modified TiO(2) film can be collected at a conducting electrode to generate a photocurrent. The TiO(2)-CdSe composite, when employed as a photoanode in a photoelectrochemical cell, exhibits a photon-to-charge carrier generation efficiency of 12%. Significant loss of electrons occurs due to scattering as well as charge recombination at TiO(2)/CdSe interfaces and internal TiO(2) grain boundaries.  相似文献

Conductometric measurements have been employed to gain a detailed insight into the interactions between two cationic surfactants, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC), in water and in an aqueous solution of sodium chloride. The experimental data were analyzed according to Rubingh’s model within the framework of the pseudophase separation model. The evaluated values of critical micelle concentration (cmc) were found to be lower than their corresponding cmc id values, signifying attractive interactions involving both components in the solutions. The micellar mole fractions (\( X_{1}^{\text{Rub}} \)) of TTAB evaluated by Rubingh’s model were always larger than the ideal values (\( X_{1}^{\text{id}} \)), signifying the higher involvement of TTAB in mixed micelles of TTAB and DTAC. Activity coefficients (\( f_{ 1}^{\text{Rub}} \) and \( f_{ 2}^{\text{Rub}} \)) were always below one in all cases signifying synergism in the mixed micelles. All the outcomes point to synergism and attractive interactions in the mixed systems. Values of excess Gibbs energy were evaluated by employing Rubingh’s model (\( \Delta G_{\text{ex}}^{\text{Rub}} \)) and the \( \Delta G_{\text{ex}}^{\text{Rub}} \) values obtained are negative. The values of \( \Delta H_{\text{m}}^{\text{o}} \) and \( \Delta S_{\text{m}}^{\text{o}} \) reveal that hydrophobic interaction is expected to be the binding force between TTAB and DTAC in aqueous media at lower temperatures, while both hydrophobic interactions as well as exothermic interactions are involved at higher temperatures. The interaction forces between the surfactants were found to be enhanced in the presence of NaCl.  相似文献
