Methodological reflections on a three-step-design combining observation,stimulated recall and interview

In this paper a tripartite qualitative design combining abservation, stimulated recall and interview is presented and discussed. This three-step-design makes it possible to get insight into the interaction of internal and external processes when solving mathematical tasks. The data analysis depends on the research question and the methodological approach. In the light of two research projects in mathematics education two different methods of data analysis are presented and methodologically reflected.     

How I Do It: Miniplate Reconstruction of the Lateral Thyroid Lamina: One-Stage Restoration of Voice After Teflon Granuloma Resection

This case report describes a one-stage technique for long-term voice restoration and laryngeal reconstruction in the treatment of Teflon (Dupont, Wilmington, Delaware) granuloma. A patient who presented with severe dysphonia underwent resection of a Teflon granuloma via a lateral laryngotomy. A pedicled strap muscle flap was used to reconstruct the paraglottic space. The muscle flap was positioned through the lateral laryngotomy with direct endoscopic visualization of the endolarynx to ensure correct vertical positioning and medialization of the vocal fold. The muscle flap was secured in this position with suture fixation. The trapdoor piece of cartilage that was elevated to create the window in the lateral thyroid lamina was repositioned over the pedicled muscle flap and reinforced with a titanium miniplate, which was secured to the remaining thyroid cartilage. The patient had excellent voice results and has not required revision or augmentation. Reinforcement of the lateral thyroid lamina using titanium miniplate fixation helps to stabilize the muscle pedicle flap and the position of the vocal fold, in this case resulting in good long-term voice results after a single-stage reconstruction.     

Classification of Nonorientable 3-Manifolds Admitting Decompositions into ≤ 26 Coloured Tetrahedra

The present paper adopts a computational approach to the study of nonorientable 3-manifolds: in fact, we describe how to create an automaticcatalogue of all nonorientable 3-manifolds admitting coloured triangulationswith a fixed number of tetrahedra. In particular, the catalogue has been effectively produced and analysed for up to 26 tetrahedra, to reach the complete classification of all involved 3-manifolds. As a consequence, the following summarising result can be stated:THEOREM I. Exactly seven closed connected prime nonorientable3-manifolds exist, which admit a coloured triangulation consisting of atmost 26 tetrahedra.More precisely, they are the four Euclidean nonorientable 3-manifolds, the nontrivial S2 bundle overS1, the topological product between thereal projective plane RP2 andS1, and the torus bundle overS1, with monodromy induced by matrix(10 -11).     

MNDO study of reaction paths: Diboration of acetylene

The reaction of B₂H₄ with acetylene has been studied by the MNDO method. It is shown that the reaction is exothermic and proceeds in two steps. The first step is the formation of a three-center -complex and this is the rate-determining step of the reaction. The second step is the rearrangement of the -complex to the product and this step requires a very small amount of activation energy. The activation barrier for the diboration reaction is 12.8 kcal/mol.The proposed mechanism is significantly different from those proposed earlier and explains all experimental data relating to this reaction.     

Theoretical study of unimolecular rearrangements of vinylidenes to acetylenes

The rearrangement of vinylidene to acetylene has been studied in detail by the density functional method, using Becke's three‐parameter exchange functional and the gradient‐corrected functional of Lee, Yang, and Parr. The rearrangement of the anion, as well as that of fluoro‐substituted systems, has also been investigated, in order to determine the effect of fluorine substitution on the activation barrier to the 1,2‐hydrogen shift, as well as the relative migratory aptitudes of hydrogen and fluorine. Natural bond orbital analysis is invoked to gain insight into the mechanisms of the rearrangements. Basis size effects are also discussed, particularly in relation to anionic systems. The need to include diffuse functions in geometry optimizations of anionic systems is reinforced by the present calculations. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2005     

Determination of thickness, dielectric constant of thiol films, and kinetics of adsorption using surface plasmon resonance

This paper describes the formation of a self-assembled monolayer of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) under different concentrations on a gold sensor disk, monitoring in situ and in real time using surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR). The film thickness and dielectric constant were determined for a fully formed monolayer using one-color approach SPR. The kinetic studies of the film formation in ethanol solution indicated that the self-assembled monolayer is formed in a two-step adsorption process. In this sense, this unpublished route was applied on the basis of a model where many molecules are adsorbed at an initial step and then can be desorbed and/or rearranged to form a perfect monolayer.     

1H and 13C assignments of two new triterpenes from Cladocolea grahami

The structure elucidation and 1H and 13C assignments of the new triterpenes 3beta-palmitoxy-7beta-hydroxyolean-12-ene (1) and its hydrolysis product 3beta,7beta-dihydroxyolean-12-ene (2) and 3beta-sn-glyceroyl-(1'-palmitoxy)urs-12-ene (3), isolated from the aerial parts of Cladocolea grahami (Loranthaceae), are reported.     

Assembly of the hexameric Escherichia coli arginine repressor investigated by nano-electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry

The arginine repressor (ArgR) from Escherichia coli regulates genes for L-arginine metabolism and is a required recombination factor for colE1 plasmid replication. Both functions require binding of L-arginine to the protein. In this work, nano-electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (nano-ESI-TOFMS) is used to study conformational and oligomeric states of intact ArgR and its isolated structural domains. In agreement with X-ray diffraction studies, it is shown that ArgR oligomerizes to form hexamers in both the presence and absence of L-arginine, and the basic unit of oligomerization appears to be the trimer. Higher-order assembly into dodecamers is also detected. The isolated C-terminal domain is found to associate into trimers and hexamers whereas the N-terminal domain is detected in its monomeric form. The observed species distributions suggest a role for the N-terminal domain in hexamer stabilization.     

A boxmodel development to study the relationships between the photo-oxidants and the particles formation in the troposphere

The model BAGS (Boxmodel for Aerosol and Gasphase Simulations) has been developed. It is composed of two major modules: the first one describes the system of the chemical reactions in the gaseous phase, the second one calculates the aerosol chemical composition and the dimensional distribution of the particles. The boxmodel has been developed with the introduction of new chemical and physical processes, not previously included, in particular the formation of Secondary Organic Aerosol. The other implemented processes are a module for the dynamic of the particle population, nucleation, coagulation and dry deposition. The last phase of the work has been a check of the BAGS capabilities by a series of tests, that have permitted to compare it with other models (MAPS and MADM). The tests in particular have concerned the aerosol water content prediction, the photochemistry, the condensation of the inorganic compounds and the formation of Secondary Organic Aerosol.
