Crosslinked polystyrene with improved mechanical properties

The synthesis of some divinyl monomers—bis(vinylphenyl)ethane ( 2 ), bis(vinylbenzyloxy)hexane ( 3a ), and bis(vinylbenzyloxy)dodecane ( 3b ) is reported. Copolymers of the new monomers and styrene were evaluated as an alternative to divinylbenzene-crosslinked polymers for use as matrices and absorbents. The mechanical properties and the amount of residual double bonds in the copolymers were compared. It was found that the new copolymers, unlike the divinylbenzene-crosslinked polymers, retained their mechanical strength even at high crosslinking degrees. Stress at break values of 79, 68, and 18 N/mm² were found for the polymers crosslinked with 20 mol % of 3a, 2 , and divinylbenzene; 5, 25 and 45% of the divinyl units in these polymers were left as pendant double bonds. Porous styrene– 2 copolymers were synthesized and shown to have lower surface areas than the corresponding divinylbenzene-crosslinked polymers. The pore size distribution showed that this was due to the absence of the smallest pores which are found in the divinylbenzene-crosslinked polymers in between heavily crosslinked nodules. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Inequalities for the generalized trigonometric and hyperbolic functions

The generalized trigonometric functions occur as an eigenfunction of the Dirichlet problem for the one-dimensional p$p$-Laplacian. The generalized hyperbolic functions are defined similarly. Some classical inequalities for trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, such as Mitrinovi?–Adamovi?’s inequality, Lazarevi?’s inequality, Huygens-type inequalities, Wilker-type inequalities, and Cusa–Huygens-type inequalities, are generalized to the case of generalized functions.     

Supramolecular Sensor for Astringent Procyanidin C1: Fluorescent Artificial Tongue for Wine Components

An artificial tongue that detects astringent components for a comprehensive evaluation of taste has not been established to date. Herein, we first propose fluorescent polythiophene (PT) derivatives ( S1 – S3 ) modified with 3-pyridinium boronic acid as supramolecular chemosensors for wine components including astringent procyanidin C1. After numerous attempts for the synthetic conditions, more than 95 mol % of the PT unit was modified with the pyridinium boronic acid moiety. To evaluate the PT derivatives as chemosensors of the artificial tongue, qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed with four types of wine components (i.e., sweet, sour, bitter, and astringent tastes) in combination with pattern recognition models. Notably, procyanidin C1 in the actual wine sample was successfully detected in a quantitative manner. In other words, we have established an authentic artificial tongue using PT based supramolecular chemosensors.     

Novel Bioreversible Prodrugs of Clodronate

Abstract

Clodronate (1) belongs to family of bisphosphonates which are used to inhibit mineralization of soft tissues as well as bone formation and resorption disorders.[I] The clinical use of bisphosphonates is limited due to their poor bióvailability which is mostly attributed to their hydrophilic structure. More lipophilic molecules are obtained if some or all of the anionic sites are converted to covalent bonds. We herein report a new prodrug serie for clodronate: the anhydrides 2 and 3. Previously we have reported that the simple alkyl esters 4 do not release clodronate via chemical or enzymatic hydrolysis.[2] The prepared new derivatives are stable in water (pH 5–7.5) but clodronate isrelased rapidly with enzymatic hydrolysis.
