Preparation of a resin-based chromium catalyst for effecting [6pi + 2pi] cycloaddition reactions

[reaction: see text] A resin-based chromium catalyst for performing [6pi + 2pi] cycloaddition reactions has been prepared from chloromethylated polystyrene. The catalyst provides cycloadducts in yields comparable to the photochemical and thermal versions of these transformations, and the process is effective with a wide range of 6pi and 2pi reaction partners.

Readily available tricyclo[3.2.2.0^2,4]non-6-en-8-one is converted into the tricyclo ring system of the aristolane sesquiterpenes via an alkoxide accelerated [3, 3]-sigmatropic rearrangement.

A four step sequence is described for the conversion of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids into highly substituted pyridines.     

Cumulant functions in optical coherence theory

Cumulant functions are introduced to describe the statistical state of a radiation field. These functions are simply related to the optical coherence functions but have some interesting features. It is shown that if the cumulant functions of all orders greater than some numberN ₀ vanish then they also vanish for all orders greater than 2. Thermal field is the only field having this property. This property holds whether the field is described by a classical stochastic process or by a quantum density operator. Further the particular operator ordering used in defining these cumulant functions for the quantized field affects only the second order cumulant function. To describe the statistical state of a vector field such as partially polarized or unpolarized radiation, one would need to introduce cumulant tensors.     

Perspective Graves triads and triads of perspective inscribed triangles

Any Pappus configuration can be regarded (in six ways) as a triad of triangles, each inscribed in the previous one; such a triad of triangles is called aGraves triad. Graves triads in which each pair of triangles is in perspective may be calledperspective Graves triads; such triads occur in connection with various results in both projective and metrical geometry. In this paper we give a synthetic proof of the existence of perspective Graves triads; the proof is of interest because it holds in allharmonic planes and requires neither the axiom of Pappus nor the full axiom of Desargues. The paper also includes synthetic proofs of other related results.(Results involving perspective Graves triads can be found in [l, p.149] and [2]. This paper is the result of recent correspondence with Guinand concerning [2] and [3].)     

Chromium(0)-promoted multicomponent cycloaddition of tethered diynes with cyclic trienes: application to the total synthesis of 9-epi-pentalenic acid

An efficient protecting group controlled regioselective chromium(0)-mediated three-component higher order cycloaddition of tethered diynes with cyclic trienes that generates five rings and six stereogenic centers in one step is described. Following a sequence of reactions featuring a chemoselective Baeyer-Villiger rearrangement and a regioselective cyclopropane hydrogenolysis, the total synthesis of 9-epi-pentalenic acid was achieved.
