Asymptotic Bound on the Characteristic Function of Signed Linear Serial Rank Statistics

This work establishes an asymptotic bound on the characteristic function of signed linear serial rank statistics. The result is obtained under rather general conditions including the important case of van der Waerden scores. It generalizes the result of Seoh (1983, Ph.D. Thesis, Department of Mathematics, Indiana University) and constitutes an essential step to the elaboration of Berry-Esséen's bounds and the establishment of Edgeworth expansions. These statistics constitute a natural tool for testing the hypothesis of white noise with a symmetrical (unspecified) distribution in comparison to other alternative hypothesis of serial dependence.     

Substrate specificity analysis of protein kinase complex Dbf2-Mob1 by peptide library and proteome array screening

Background  

The mitotic exit network (MEN) is a group of proteins that form a signaling cascade that is essential for cells to exit mitosis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The MEN has also been implicated in playing a role in cytokinesis. Two components of this signaling pathway are the protein kinase Dbf2 and its binding partner essential for its kinase activity, Mob1. The components of MEN that act upstream of Dbf2-Mob1 have been characterized, but physiological substrates for Dbf2-Mob1 have yet to be identified.     

Uptake of cesium, strontium and europium by a poly(sodium acrylate-acrylic acid) hydrogel

The uptake of cesium, strontium and europium from dilute nitric acid solutions by a poly(sodium acrylate-acrylic acid) PAA hydrogel has been investigated. pH variations are consistent with cation exchange processes: COO(-), Na (+)H (+), COO(-), Na (+)M (m+) ( M (m+) = Cs (+)and Sr (2+)) and COOH Eu (3+). Saturation of the gel is achieved for metal/carboxylate ratios R = 0.5. The swelling ratios of gels loaded with metal cations are those of uncharged, shrunk gels (Sr, Eu) or of charged, swollen gels (Cs) in agreement with the formation of uncharged (COO)(2)Sr, (COO)(2)EuX (X = NO(3) or OH) type complexes and (COO(-), Cs(+)) ion pairs. The metal cations are extracted in the gels following the order of their affinities with carboxylic groups Eu(3+) > Sr(2+) > Cs(+). An increase of the ionic strength of the metal aqueous solution up to 0.5M NaNO(3) leads to slightly decrease the europium uptake by the PAA hydrogel, but 0.1M NaNO(3) is sufficient to prevent the Sr and Cs extractions.     

Steady streaming around a spherical drop displaced from the velocity antinode in an acoustic levitation field

The steady (acoustic) streaming associated with a sphericaldrop displaced from the velocity antinode of a standing waveis studied. The ratio of the particle size to the acoustic wavelengthis treated as small but non-zero, and the solution is developedin the form of a two-term expansion in terms of the correspondingsmallness parameter. The drop viscosity is assumed to be muchhigher than that of the surrounding fluid, which is the casefor a drop in a gas medium. There are essentially three distinctregions where the steady streaming flow is analysed: insidethe drop (internal circulation), in the Stokes shear-wave layerat the surface on the gas side, and the gas outside the Stokeslayer (the outer streaming region). Solutions for the internalcirculation and the outer streaming are obtained in the limitof small Reynolds number. Despite the gas-to-liquid viscosity ratio being small, the outerstreaming may be dramatically affected by the fact that thesphere is liquid as opposed to solid. The parameter that measuresthe effect of liquidity is essentially the viscosity ratio dividedby the relative (to the particle size) thickness of the Stokeslayer. The case of a solid sphere is recovered by letting thisparameter go to zero.
