This article reports the findings of qualitative research undertakento seek to identify the key reasons why some students are notengaging with mathematics support provided by Loughborough University.The research involved a number of focus groups and onthe spot interviews with non-users fromacross the campus. Barriers identified include a lack of awarenessof the location of support and a fear of embarrassment. Furtherinterviews were conducted with regular users of the supportin an attempt to understand how some of these barriers to usagemight be overcome. The article will discuss actions that maybe taken to improve student engagement with mathematics supportand the issue of how student motivation may affect such action. 相似文献

In the last decade, substantial research in the field of post‐plasma grafting surface modification has focussed on the introduction of carboxylic acids on surfaces by grafting acrylic acid (AAc). In the present work, we report on an alternative approach for biomaterial surface functionalisation. Thin poly‐ε‐caprolactone (PCL) films were subjected to a dielectric barrier discharge Ar‐plasma followed by the grafting of 2‐aminoethyl methacrylate (AEMA) under UV‐irradiation. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of nitrogen. The ninhydrin assay demonstrated, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the presence of free amines on the surface. Confocal fluorescence microscopy (CFM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to visualise the grafted surfaces, indicating the presence of pAEMA. Static contact angle (SCA) measurements indicated a permanent increase in hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the AEMA grafted surfaces were applied for comparing the physisorption and covalent immobilisation of gelatin. CFM demonstrated that only the covalent immobilisation lead to a complete coverage of the surface. Those gelatin‐coated surfaces obtained were further coated using fibronectin. Osteosarcoma cells demonstrated better cell‐adhesion and cell‐viability on the modified surfaces, compared to the pure PCL films.

Organic superbases represented by TBD (1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene) effectively induced the decomposition of hydroxyaryl-substituted dioxetanes in acetonitrile to give bright light. The color of the chemiluminescence from a dioxetane bearing a 4-(benzoxazol-2-yl)-3,5-dihydroxyphenyl moiety varied depending on the base used. In addition to this change in the color of emission, TBD increased the chemiluminescence efficiency 2- to 5-fold compared to the results with other base systems and accelerated decomposition of the dioxetane. These unique effects of TBD may be due to its “bifunctional” character, which is different from those of other organic superbases. Chemiluminescent decomposition of the dioxetane was effectively induced by superbases even in apolar p-xylene. 相似文献

A stir membrane liquid phase microextraction procedure working under the three-phase mode is proposed for the first time for the determination of six anti-inflammatory drugs in human urine. The target compounds are isolated and preconcentrated using a special device that integrates the extractant and the stirring element. An alkaline aqueous solution is used as extractant phase while 1-octanol is selected as supported liquid membrane solvent. After the extraction, all the analytes are determined by liquid chromatography (LC) with ultraviolet detection (UV). The analytical method is optimized considering the main involved variables (e.g., pH of donor and acceptor phases, extraction time, stirring rate) and the results indicate that the determination of anti-inflammatory drugs at therapeutic and toxic levels is completely feasible. The limits of detection are in the range from 12.6 (indomethacin) to 30.7 μg/L (naproxen). The repeatability of the method, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 5) varies between 3.4% (flurbiprofen) and 5.7% (ketoprofen), while the enrichment factors are in the range from 35.0 (naproxen) to 72.5 (indomethacin). 相似文献

An efficient method for preparing conformationally restricted cyclopentenyl-glutamate analogues in a regioselective and diastereoselective manner has been developed using a formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of dehydroamino acids. Methods for preparing optically active versions of these compounds have also been devised. Ab initio MO calculations, using both minimal (STO -3G) and extended (Roos–Siegbahn) basis sets are reported for the systems methanethiol–imidazole, methanethiol–imidazole–formaldehyde, and methanethiol–imidazole–formamide, which, together with a point-change representation of a long α-helix, form models for the active site of papain. It is shown that the large electric field exerted by the helix in the active-site region is responsible for the presence of the essential residues Cys 25 and His 159 in the form of an ion pair RS? ··· ImH+, which is crucial for a recently proposed mechanism for the catalytic action of the enzyme. Also, an explanation is given for the anomalies in measured pK values for these residues. Detailed studies on the (sub)systems show that minimal basis sets lack the flexibility necessary for describing the type of proton transfer involved. We conclude that α-helices are essential parts of enzymes and that they play a significant role in the catalytic process. 相似文献
